brooklyn-based producer, composer, pianist, dj and live musician taylor mcferrin is set to release his first full length lp, early riser, in june 2014 on flying lotus brainfeeder record label. taylors musical style is equally influenced by the legends of 60s/70s soul, the kings of the modern beat generation, golden era hip hop, free form jazz and electronic music. by playing all of the instruments on his productions, while also relying heavily on sampling and chopping up his live takes, he has found a sound that seamlessly bridges myriad musical worlds and draws the listener into a constantly shifting audio soundscape. the vinyl lp comes with digital download code.

both being well established electronic musicians, producing music since the era of hardware samplers and dat tape, they recently teamed up for their new project named after the famous two dogs who travelled to space.

both listening hip hop and electronic, raphael henard and maxime denuc started to make music together in 1999. interested at the same time by mainstream tunes and extreme audio researches they try to propose their own interpretation of club music and released a first ep on the french-japanese label sonore in 2011. they have been invited by prestigious festivals and promoters around the world such as sonar (sp), villette sonique (fr), club metro (jp), todaysart (be), dans dakar (sw), les siestes e&#769,lectroniques (fr), universidad de coimbra (pt), nouveau casino (fr), le lieu unique (fr)... succession :struck by the vertigo from pancrace royer while watching the bertand dumont film «l’humanite&#769,» plapla pinky started to include that track in their dj set. after some research in the field of baroque musique they decided to make a mixtape of their favorite tunes of the genre, paying homage to the modernity and emotional power of that era.

music is strongly linked to memory, sometimes just a simple note will trigger a deep feeling of nostalgia or emotion. the new homesick series was created by music enthusiasts who are living half a world away from their birthplaces. their concept is a play on memory, to re-edit and rework songs from the past into something which is timeless, tracks which feel fresh but retain their memories. for the first release, the homesick team have curated three pieces by drop out orchestra, late nite tuff guy, zimmer, and amadei. doo have carefully reworked -no scrubs- into a warm, bass driven, disco jam suited for the dancefloor, alntg has provided a solid groove theory lesson as only he can, and the ep is rounded-off with a special (double) bonus track for all the people who love 80s-era french pop music, reworked by zimmer and the asia-based newcomer amadei.

the goal with supernova was to look back to the disco era but with a synth heavy and altogether more cosmic twist. alex is a big fun of modern russian classical music composing style. also he was inspired by early english progressive scene (yes, elo etc). this is why u-kas melodic lines are long and not so straight sometimes. and oleg is musically far from academic school and prefers zappa, early german electronic and psychedelic krautrock etc.

in the not so distant past, a certain chicago house sound found its way to clubs worldwide. a jacking house sound made up of anything producers could get there hands on. if you had a cool alarm sound, you could throw it under a 909 and watch dancers freak out. dj rafaels new ep for on the prowl is a nod to that era. while hes not using an alarm as his tool, youll notice the in your face style in which its based upon. some of you might know rafael from his earlier miracles club releases for cutters and mexican summer. this time around rafael fauria joins friend brian foote for some on the edge jack tracks which are both packed with acid and foot stomping percussion.

daze maxim adds another episode to his practice of long-form explorations, on this his second release for lisbon’s assemble music. this time hes joined by a master in this field, baby ford, whose remixes over the past few years continue his own distinctive development of extended minimal house trips. dazes beginning an ending rides a skippy, loose beat for several minutes, the snares and hats gradually opening up as wordless vocalizations exclaim and interject with increasing regularity, the bass bumping contentedly underneath. pads join the equation for an intricate midsection – evoking memories of alcachofa-era happy experimentalism that nonetheless fit within daze maxims disciplined and dancefloor-oriented approach.peter ford recasts the original into his now unmistakable soundspace, where the push and pull between front-and-centre rhythmic components and evanescent background atmospherics creates that recognizable but undefinable sense of emotion, felt but unexplained. in ford’s world there isnt anything as simple as a beginning or an end, so the remix provides a valuable counterpoint to the original. given their now impressive track record, its no surprise that assemble music has pulled off another cohesive statement that works equally on the body and the mind.

ron morelli returns to stare down the ‘floor with four pieces written during the stress-busting sessions for ‘spit’. the muggy, droning welt of ‘public consumption’ kicks off with the sound of new york techno shot from the hip, while ‘another hit’ vents a vintage era-regis style built on skull-chipping snares and effluent acid modulation. the album’s writhing batacuda banger, ‘crack microbes’ reappears here as an extra-ferric extended version, sustaining the hypnotic intensity for nine minutes of panic attack acid and febrile cowbells, while ‘’rushing again’ escorts us to a close with triplet techno shook down by railgun snares and a grotty synthline.

there are certain moments and event that can redefine a nation and a culture. the 1987 1988 acid house explosion was such a moment in our time that it did capture a nation and a forged a new era in modern music. acid was such a taboo in the late 80s in the uk that law officials thought that the music insight mass use of acid and everyone would space out, and that was far from the truth. but what is true that some guys from chicago created a sound that the world einbraced and continues to embrace to this day.

spike wolters quartet of self released lps which surfaced between 1981 - 84 have become the stuff of legend. an avant garde collection of solo tracks, combining guitar, drum machines, synths & vocals into spacious, fx laden compositions which stand firmly outside of the era in which they were created. its a lo-fi, but broad selection, taking in experimental pieces, alongside taut post-punk workouts, and more laidback steely dan moments. the sixteen cuts on orange cloud nine have been lovingly compiled from those four early 80s lps by golf channels phil south. its a limited single vinyl package, with custom artwork from perks & minis misha & individual download code.

axel boman broke through in 2010 with his holy love ep, released on dj kozes pampa records. the track purple drank became an instant classic in underground house music circles – since then, boman has toured extensively while releasing original productions and remixes on labels like dfa, hypercolour, kompakt, permanent vacation and ovum, as well as on studio barnhus, the label he runs together with kornel kovacs and petter nordkvist

optimo trax is an offshoot label of optimo music for tracks aimed at djs/dancefloors. yes, we know there are too many record labels already, but we felt an overriding desire to start another one as so much music that didnt seem quite right for optimo music (i.e. music that was specifically designed for dancing) kept coming our way. like the parent label, optimo trax will release music by new artists and excavate forgotten classics. luma is a project by dave clark from glasgow. dave had his first release as a member of state of flux in 1993 on t&b vinyl, the label twitch ran with his dj partner of that era, brainstorm. twitch and dave have continued to work together in various ways ever since. he has released records as truffle club, and as big ned on optimo music as well as working with twitch from 2005 - 2010 remixing a plethora of artists under the optimo (espacio) moniker before fatherhood necessitated him focusing on changing nappies rather than programming synths. dave has also recorded under various aliases for r&s, numbers, stuffrecords, dissident and wireblock. the twentieth anniversary of that first release seemed a fitting date for dave to unleash his monster new club music alter ego, luma on optimo trax. twitch thinks dave is the best producer in scotland and endlessly weeps into his gin and tonics about how unprolific dave is, so was ecstatic when the 4 killer tracks were delivered that make up this third optimo trax ep. these have been thoroughly road tested over the last few months at gigs around the world.

clear soul forces is next to carry the burning flame for the city of detroit. discovered, championed, and mentored by royce da 5’9”, the four-man group rhymes like genetically enhanced street poets from the 70s who are here to remind us what album rap sounds like. the vision of e-fav, l.a.z., noveliss, and producer/emcee ilajide combines golden era, 21st century, backpack and sub-woofer hip-hop but never sounds dated, derivative, or awkwardly avant garde.

gutts are a jaded wrestling double act that were much celebrated in the golden era of uk wrestling in the 1980s. after a slow-decline into inactivity and relative obesity they decided to make a comeback in 2013 as an electronic music band called gutts. both neil landstrumm and alan hostage have recently reached peak-fitness through circuit training and eating salad for dinner, toning up for this new heavy-hitting vinyl release on glasgows horror boogie. both were last seen, exiting landstrumms analogue graveyard shouting *not the ears, not the ears* and *i demand to be treated like a sultan*. no further details were available at this time.

dark maneuvres is a track which lives up to its name, the original expressing pumping, dark and crunchy sounds interspersed with string arrangements and overdubs which move the track in various different directions. the 1996 original is a great example of some production techniques of the time and is of interest in identifying the direction of the techno sound in that era, as well as being eminently listenable. slam were very much involved in the progression of techno at the same time as envoy was creating tracks such as dark manoeuvres and as such they have a real handle on how things have evolved, enabling them to bring a classic release such as this bang up to date. the distinctive hook, attention-grabbing melody and strings which are distinctive elements of the original are all incorporated in a full and fresh dynamic which sees some of these elements regrouped in individual sections such as the strings or moulded with deeper, darker resonance into a new expression.
