following on from his debut ep on drumcode earlier this year, ilario alicante returns. for the past few years ilario alicante has enjoyed something of an unintentional ibiza kinship with adam beyer. when the swede played his special annual sets on the amnesia terrace for cocoon, for three years out of four, the italian has been right there playing alongside him, ensuring his talents were on the radar of the drumcode chief. ilario made his first appearance on the label in 2016 with the stirring temporary featuring on a-sides vol.4, before securing his first full-length release with the awakened ep that dropped earlier this year. figures & echoes deepens his contribution to the label with half a dozen powerful cuts. figure of ra opens the ep, combining a rousing vocal loop, pulsating beats and effective melodic interlude to fantastic effect. the acid runner follows and is true to its name, characterised by echoing vocal effects that lead to a piercing 303-line that hits with peak-time power. virgos echoes features a persistent synth line that combining effectively with lush layers of melody to create an atmospheric impact. third eye delivers an exhilarating dose of rave thanks to the hypnotizing riff that runs throughout.

in a new transatlantic partnership, uk label secret reels and washington, dc imprint better listen records have teamed up for a run of collaborative records. the joint brand, secret listen, combines the labels in sound as well as in name. imagine the lush, pensive and moody deep house tones of secret reels joining with the sample-heavy disco soul leanings of blr. secret listen vol. 1 takes two artists each from both rosters for the first amalgamation. the -secret side- hosting english producers harry wolfman and chocky, while the listen side invites sune and vitamin d of high hat appreciation society and the newly founded honey butter records to the affair. it s a v/a release with a variety of offerings and flavours. wolfmans floozy sits first in the record as a bright and whimsical flute-led morsel, while chockys inner disco is a cerebral, loopy cut. on the flip, sune provides some exquisite rhodes action in his groovy midtempo effort, glidin, and his swedish compatriot closes out the affair with the bittersweet lately.

das mysteriöse projekt hype williams ist mit einem neuen album zurück auf big dada. in einem statement zur album ankündigung wurde angegeben dass die ursprünglichen mitglieder dean blunt & inga copeland nicht mehr teil der gruppe seien und ihre letzte gemeinsame veröffentlichung 2011 auf hippos in tanks erschien. die größte aufmerksamkeit bekam das ursprünglich 2005 gegründete projekt bisher für seine ep kelly price w8 gain vol ii, welche ebenfalls 2011 auf hyperdub erschien und große kreise in der welt der elektronischen musik zog.

dc175 comes courtesy of alias, a new project comprising of harvey & ryan mckay, who are two acts who have previously released solo material on the label. harvey mckays last appearance was in late 2016 when he dropped the mad drummer on a-sides vol. 4 whereas ryan mckay s last outing was in 2015 when he appeared on a-sides vol.3 under the name skiver. this is the first collaborative project between the scottish duo under their new moniker alias. the ep opens with pentatonic , a tough sounding track that has been designed for the forward-thinkers. the truth follows up sharply, with vintage piano stabs and a vocal that gives the track abounding energy. the on-point percussion leads you on a trip of pure rapture. the release closes with the apocalyptic dream taker, which is teeming with sinister vocal action and hostile synth work and a sublime way to sign off.

‘this is my chance’ lay dormant until the 90s, when it was included on the ace cd “the heart of southern soul vol 3”. that series was aimed at ballad fans but art gentry’s mid-tempo gem proved ideal for the modern soul dance scene. a 12-inch promo issued at the time is now an in-demand piece of vinyl. mystery surrounds who wrote shirley brown’s ‘even if the signs are wrong’ but this splendid, lilting soul song deserves a vinyl release.
