2014 was a busy year for ztrl and tape hiss alike. we’ve been enjoying the support of numerous music-addicts, record collectors and djs for which we are massively grateful. this is exactly why we are going back to where it all started and bringing you a new ztrl release. the tracks which are featured on jelen (’now’ in english) ep work well on their own yet they form a cohesive sound when put together. each track on the release is universal as we can think of them as dj tools in a good sense or as slowly building independent compositions. it’s up only to the djs how they wish to use them.

the third release from wavefreform again comes to us from the east, and this time around it marks a reformation of sound for both the label and the artist. half of the long-running georgian duo greenbeam & leon, boyd schidt is a producer with over a decade of work already under his belt whose first releases emerged in 2007. as a solo artist, his career dates to 2010 with digital releases on georgia’s front rec, fvf records, and emote music, and a track on the new vinyl compilation from studio r°. with the hard, broken kick pattern, elevated tempo, and nods to electro, the a-side ‘phantom’, a collaboration with subex, is a change of pace for the artist and the hardest thing yet to emerge from wavereform. dubwise use of effects shows the same hands still at work, but the sound elements, granulated blasts of static and drop-based structure of the track hold strong parallels to the rejuvenated techno sound currently emerging from the uk. the b-side, ‘structure’, recalls the previous work of the artist: subtle, building dub techno rich in detail and with the dancefloor firmly in mind. there is clear experience at work here with his deliberate deployment and manipulation of elements as the track struts along while enveloping the listener in its smaller details. as it pauses and takes an extended breakdown, the details rush forwards, but it finds renewed force to power itself to the close. coming in this case from an established producer with a long history, this kind of control is not surprising, but it is more indication of the riches of the east that have yet to be discovered by audiences worldwide.

after the huge success of *say no more* featuring azari & iiis cedric at the beginning of the year, birmingham bred subb-an is back on board crosstown rebels to deliver yet another incredible release. *vapour trails* is a solid, driving club track with that distinct subb-an sound featuring highly captivating vocals from amsterdams the million plan. also directed straight at the dancefloor with a deep hypnotic breakdown, the *terrace dub* perfectly fits into the series of terrace remixes the talented producer has released lately. specifically requested as remixer by subb-an, legend matthew herbert delivers a completely new musical adaptation with fantastic use of the vocal that plays out as the track constantly evolves. on the b-side *oasis* leads with swinging grooves, progressing into prominent hats, a unique stabbing bassline and a trippy vocal from whitney fierce formerly of hercules & love affair.

t c f is the moniker of norwegian contemporary artist and experimental computer musician lars holdhus. his work explores themes of code, cryptography and privacy through the use of visual, sonic, built and written concepts. often the titles and descriptions of his work are written in cyphertext, the key to which is hidden within the piece itself. his forthcoming release on liberation technologies will further this cryptographic theme, consisting of digital and physical content containing the necessary keys to unlock the full meaning of the work.

a lot of water has passed under the bridge since the release of etienne jaumet’s night music, dating from october 2009. his hypnotizing music and enchanting live performances put him directly on the map. it’s just him who is in control of his ship. he moves without complexes from his saxophone to his drum machine (his beloved tr 808) while turning knobs modulating synths, and sending his voice through an echo.la visite, etienne’s brand new album, more luminous and jazzy than its predecessor, has been composed and produced within a two month period in the versatile studio. it became a piece of introspection, mentally as well as physically. in the title track, for which flop wrote the text, we hear etienne travelling through the inside of a body, fantastic voyage style.it is always surprising to see a record taking shape. etienne would arrive at the studio without any precise idea in head, approaching his work rather intuitively. he works standing up, which brings a very different energy than being seated behind a computer polishing up every detail. he is in total mastery of his set-up, ready to capture that short-lived moment of true creation. the only use a computer has for him, is to record his experiments - afterwards being mixed by jerome caron (blackjoy).in between night music and la visite, etienne has not been lazy. not only has he done numerous collaborations (amongst others with joakim, richard pinhas, francois & the atlas mountain) and picked up djing, he has also recorded a new zombie zombie album (rituels d’un nouveau monde) with cosmic neman, as well as the soundtrack loubia hamra. and he worked with artist felicie d estienne d orves on the installation satori. at this very moment, etienne and his saxophone are still part of the tour of james holden.

it s only so long before liam geddes becomes a name you ll start hearing on the worldwide underground stage. having already churned out a number of uncompromisingly deep house tracks over the past couple of years, he comes armed with another exceptional ep on mil - the third release on the new music is love sister label - that further demonstrates his genuine dynamism as a producer. the with closed eyes ep should win this very talented producer the recognition his fresh beat work deserves into the wild gets proceedings underway, a ripping bassline paves out over rattling percussion shakes while oscillating dream like jingles play out during the course of the track. chopped vocal samples are introduced and tease against the shuffling drums which elevates the track with real drive and groove. close ya eyes for the journey packs the same layer of heat with its similarly groove-heavy bassline - a staple of geddes well-crafted sound. firmly footed, intermittent chimes seep into the track and are complemented by siren-like chords which grow truer in presence, until a hypnotic vocal snippet fulfils the deep terrains of the track. a saint is a tumultuous techno-fused roller with it s rip-roaring bassline and percussive loops which rhythmically swing out over shuddering pads, sustained chords and a cut up female vocal, brining a twist of colour to the arrangements of the track. there s a keen sense of tension and release, elevating this above your average and confirms geddes does depth and darkness with real conviction. broke will surely prove a high point for any decent dj set, and sounds like a cut you d expect from someone like delano smith. strings faintly play out over looped key chimes and a funk-like riff, while ticking hi-hats and a careful use of vocal sample gives the track extra heat, each element powered by the rumbling bassline.

ocoeurs latest album a parallel life finds franck zaragoza showcasing his adeptness at fusing thoughtfully crafted melodies with twitchingly syncopated techno. in a recent interview berlin music portal kultmucke introduced zaragoza something of an idm prodigy and while thats a fair summation due to his preference for malleable beatwork and his use of heavily processed field recordings there is more there than simple glitchery. zaragozas melodies, while often shrouded in hazes of static, affect the cinematic minimalism of modern composition. these such comparisons put him stylistically hovering somewhere between the likes of arovane and max richter which is no meager feat. a parallel life aches, breathes, pulsates and is forever churning. it has a subliminal soul that is all too often a casualty of electronic music of this style. the vinyl lp includes a download code.

this edit of malis amadou & mariam ce nest pas bon (originally created in 2008 for my dj sets) was supposed to be included on the recently released third autonomous africa 12inch. unfortunately i didnt get permission to use it in time for that release but permission has now been given, so rather than wait for aa 004 in 2015 it is going to come out as a limited edition hand stamped 10inch as soon as possible. all proceeds will once again go to the mtandika mission in tanzania -www.actioninafrica.org/about-mtandika.php a big thanks to ben ufo and midland for championing this edit. the interest they generated directly led to the motivation for this release.

kalipo is jakob häglsperger from berlin who devotes himself to experimental electronica. his debut album yaruto follows a series of remixes and contributions to compilations released by antime and stiff little spinners. on it, häglsperger tries to create a both unique and timeless sound that takes cues from dance music, downbeat and gamelan traditions alike. making use of his wide array of analogue synthesizers, a rhodes piano, a metallophone and guitars, häglsperger is creating the abstract narrative of an impersonal biography by creating moods that correspond with certain stages of life as well as chopped up vocal samples. the double vinyl lp includes a download code.

following a double headed debut on our recent nasty rips comp. – a crisp remix of hackmans ‘ always’ and a fizzing solo outing -‘not afraid’, montreal producer reagan grey makes her full shifting peaks debut with a high grade 3 track ep, alongside 3 useful remixes. opener ‘owl’ featuring sandy duperval on vocals, takes a neat song of love and life and rolls it over a punchy ukg/house groove, adding classic sounding organ stabs and swingy rhythms, with a tight arrangement keeping things moving along. ‘feel the pressure’ features christie nelson on vocals, with an equally strong , r n’ b inflected song woven in and out of a looser, spacier arrangement, rgs snappy drums again underpin proceedings. not afraid reappears, having made friends along the way via it s nasty rips inclusion thanks to driving detroit-influenced synths, a pulsing bassline and sweet builds and drops. on the remix front, lukas ( future boogie ) keeps things simple on owl, with a fat, kick-lead groove and sparing use of the vox before drifting into a crowd-pleasing breakdown halfway through. benway (aka fast rising muscovite nphonix) takes swathes of the feel the pressure vocal for a ride over broken beats and a bass heavy backing, with hints of techno torque setting his pressurize mix apart from the similar de pressurize version.

nsm002 is me, mosca, again. two not-house not-techno tracks, a little more raw and textured than my last 12inch but with the same emphasis on dark, sexy grooves and just enough dissonance and freakiness. the greyhounds is a dubby rolling thing with an indulgent breakdown that i wondered about scrapping. i ended up backing myself because the crowds i played it to seemed happy, and ive wanted to use those strings for eleven years now. i tried to make clinical trial for the basement clubs, dust and metal and tape. thanks for checking it out.

there is an alternative reality known as the big funk factory. those unsuspecting travellers who fall into this other place find themselves exposed to many characters and tales from this universe. once inducted into this particular charged vacuum embodiment you have only one choice but to go on and familiarise yourself with the history and people involved in the hope that you ll find a way through to the other side, but beware the experience and sensations may be seductive, you may choose to remain. be aware it is an audio, visual and kind of literate assault on the senses. the beginning in the loosest possible use of the term starts with the creation of the creature known as d-roid. as a new entrant, before conducting yourself through each chapter, perhaps you should familiarise yourself with the characters involved in those disreputable individuals featured in this episode.
