nick mackrory & harry collier’s musical partnership dates all the way back to the 90’s, when they were both deeply invested in the musical boom in the uk that followed acid house, the rave scene, and the ibiza experience. nick went from drumsticks to turntables to studio wizardry, while harry honed in on his golden voice - which led him to a stint as a singer for faithless. they found their way back to each other in 2014 and have since developed a sound together that is fresh but not too polished. with touches of 60’s chanson coupled with sundazed electronics, their songs linger on like the feeling of a long day spent outdoors in summer.

heutzutage suchen wir nach verlässlichen figuren in der welt. zum glück gibt es peter perrett. auf das britische musik-urgestein war schließlich schon in den späten 70ern verlass. damals bescherte er mit der band the only ones der londoner new wave bewegung den hit -another girl, another planet-, drei alben und ganz viel inspiration. letzteres wussten vor allem die kritiker. und trotzdem gelang der band niemals der totale durchbruch. danach blieb es über ein jahrzehnt ruhig um perrett. seinem drogenmissbrauch folgte das abtauchen und dann die mystifizierung seiner person. nach zwei solo-gehversuchen 1996 und 2001 brach er 2015 zu einer kleinen tour auf. dort performte er seit langem auch wieder neue songs. nun meldet sich der heute 65-jährige mit dem neuen solo-album -how the west was won- zurück. wer the only ones kennt, wird wissen, dass perrett schon früh anleihen aus dem us-rock n roll mit new wave und britischer schnauze einzigartig vermischen konnte. durchflossen von neuem elan hat er gleich einen hit genau dieser couleur mitgebracht: den albumtiteltrack. von the replacements bis hin zu violent femmes, peter perretts musik hat den sound vieler darauffolgenden bands mitgeprägt. 2017 feiert er das comeback, das keiner kommen sah.

das album erschien ursprünglich bereits am 27. september 2005, und zwar beim label decaydance records von fallout-boy-gründer pete wentz. dieser hatte zuvor demos der band gehört und nahm sie unter vertrag, noch bevor sie jemals live performt hatte.
aufgenommen wurden die 13 songs von »a fever you can’t sweat out« in den somd! studios in college park, maryland. für die produktion zeichnete matt squire (good charlotte, the used, taking back sunday) verantwortlich.
das album wurde ein kommerzieller erfolg. die zweite singleauskopplung »i write sins not tragedies« schaffte es in den usa bis in die top 10 der charts.

it is making my blood boil. man, my jaw is hanging down listening to this stuff. read the email from butthole surfers man and producer, paul leary, when he heard the demo for what would become the debut philipp gorbachev & the naked man album. philipp gorbachev, the russian musician and dj, has been throwing killer parties and making some of the most innovative and exciting electronic music to come out of moscow in years. in 2014 he released his debut album silver album but when invited to perform a live boiler room he had something else in mind: a band scenario. the resulting concoction was not something locked into a 4/4 beat but rather a much more organic, groove-based sound with funk-strutting bass lines and live drums that rolled and flurried around the beats that jumped around leading the charge of the songs along with gorbachev’s damo suzuki-like vocals. taking that experiment into the studio, i dont give a snare is a wild ride that jumps genres, switches paces and alters tones frequently. the opening goodman exploding in intense rhythms and heavy, spiralling riffs that at times recall sabbath but the ever-shifting drums and gargling electronics give a wonky freshness that feels impossible to place into genre. whilst gorbachev cites a range of influences from beck to blind willie johnson as being core to him, the primary motivation is the live nature of the project itself. the main influence is the constant live experience we have as music players and performers. i want to get the most out of every party, every jam, and every dancefloor.

nach zwei gefeierten eps veröffentlicht jackson phillips a. k.a. day wave sein langerwartetes debütalbum the days we had. headcase aus dem jahr 2015 mit der durchbruch-single drag überzeugte sofort mit dem träumerischen surfpop, der nachfolger »hard to read« legte noch eine schippe drauf. inspiriert von den gesangsharmonien der beach boys auf der einen und den songstrukturen von joy division und den frühen new order auf der anderen seite, nahm der sänger und multiinstrumentalist die ersten skizzen ganz analog an gitarre, bass und schlagzeug auf.

nyc-based duo jasmine golestaneh and eddie cooper write songs through a telepathic kinship thevve developed since they started making music together. we have these sort of unspoken criteria when we re writing music. we never really need to explain what that is but we both know when it s missing or when we ve hit it. the pair, aka tempers, are set to release their fundamental fantasy ep via the vinyl factory on 24th february. creating an emotional and tonal tension of sensual and mechanical impulses, their brand of dark electronica sets haunting song writing to a sinister disco beat, pop melodies floating in an almost industrial soundscape. it follows the bands 2015 debut full-length services. fundamental fantasy is about exploring the creative scenery of romantic illusions. our need for them, how we justify them to ourselves, that moment when the imagined story line collides with reality. the ways we fictionalize people to fit into the narratives we have about love - to reflect our own beliefs, virtues and flaws. it is about celebrating fantasies swelling and getting undone, so we can pick up the pieces and craft new ones that serve us better tempers musically, fundamental fantasy is an evolution in both song writing and process, while still tracing a clear line to their earlier output. many of the eps melodies were born of live improvisation, which helped them create an instinctive, natural immediacy within their electronic arrangements. the cover of the ep depicts the duo on the volcanic island of stromboli, where they performed at the volcano extravaganza, an art and music festival curated by the vinyl factory.it is a perfect landscape to mirror the mood of ‘fundamental fantasy. a seemingly idyllic place that is isolated from the outside world.

there’s not a lot to tell about the project glow in the dark by a certain harry miller. only perhaps we can state that with these eight tracks at hand harry miller accomplished probably the most enchanting album of the still quite young year. just when we wanted to dismiss the short-dated genre of chillwave wistfully, “future bliss” comes along with a bewitching sound hailing from an optimistic but cranky future. already the opening track “step one” with its vocal samples and its spoken word intro is futuristic soul full of affirmation of life pillowed on a synth bedding smoothed to the max up to its edges. but also the following seven tracks spread infectious positive vibes all around. the magic of glow in the dark’s tracks is energized mostly by miller’s delicate way of treating his various samples, a wary manner one usually only shows when picking up a guitar. and unlike sample based music feeding from hiphop his tracks are completely free from any sort of nostalgia, because all of his songs are designed for the future through and through. “future bliss” is one hell of a joy ride, from the first note to the last tone. the neon funk of “1987”, the broken beat of “7 billion = 1”, the synth pop of “the last dance” and in general, all of the eight tracks could be little, but great hymns on their own. but only in its entirety they sparkle this fathomless ingeniousness hidden in glow in the dark. in the end it seems to be wiser that one has as little background information as possible to be able to lose oneself fully in this “future bliss”.

joey negro und sean p sind nicht nur leidenschaftliche plattensammler, sondern auch ein geschmackssicheres kompilations-duo. als solches haben die beiden engländer in den letzten jahren die legendären sampler-reihen “disco (not disco)”, “destination boogie” und “the soul of disco” auf die beine gestellt. letztere erlebt mit der doppel-lp “the soul of disco vol. 1” einen zweiten frühling. die zusammenstellung, die als gatefold-platte auf den markt kommt, enthält zehn ausgesuchte stücke der ersten “the soul of disco”-fassung von 2005, die damals als 2cd mit insgesamt 23 tracks erschien, und die joey negro und sean p ganz besonders am herzen lagen. selbstredend handelt es sich dabei um songs extrem seltener und damit extrem kostspieliger 12”es, die allein bei ausgewiesenen disco-connaisseuren im plattenschrank zu finden sind. die kollektion spannt mit sechs original-raritäten und vier dj-freundlichen edits von joey negro und sean p einen bogen über die jahre 1976 bis 82.

darauf haben die vinylliebhaber unter den pink-floyd-fans sehnsüchtig gewartet. die rocklegenden veröffentlichen all ihre alben nach und nach wieder als lps. im juni 2016 ging es bereits mit den ersten vier platten der band los, nach und nach folgten weitere alben. 2017 wird die reihe weiter fortgeführt, und zwar mit »the final cut«. die songs der neuauflage wurden von james guthrie, joel plante und bernie grundman neu gemastert. alle reissues der reihe erscheinen auf 180 g schwerem vinyl. beim coverartwork handelt es sich jeweils um das originaldesign.

entgegen heute gebräuchlicher gepflogenheiten erscheint die wiederveröffentlichung von “the closer you get” mit dem originalsound aus dem jahr 2000, das heißt nicht remastered. dafür wird die platte durch ein zweites vinyl flankiert, das auf der a-seite die dritte (von fünf) peel-sessions enthält, mithin fünf songs, und auf der rückseite zwei single-b-seiten (“get a real tattoo”, “i’m wide open”) sowie den track “oh! dear”, aufgenommen während der ersten peel-session.

wer die lp beim record store day 2012 verpasst hat, sollte jetzt zuschlagen, denn -live at acton- enthält eines der letzten konzerte von joe strummer. am 15. november 2002 spielte der britische polit-punk-veteran mit den mescaleros ein benefizkonzert in der londoner acton town hall, um streikende feuerwehrmänner zu unterstützen. im publikum saß damals auch ex-clash-kollege mick jones. der ließ es sich nicht nehmen, spontan bei einigen songs mitzuwirken - zum ersten und letzten mal seit 1983. nur einen monat später, am 22. dezember 2012, verstarb strummer überraschend im alter von 50 jahren.
