andre crom returns to off with a deep and moody piece of house music. based on a layer of solid drums and a warm bassline, the track evolves with a gliding synth hook and bell theme, topped by a haunting vocal featuring bramwell. berlins rising star jonas saalbach delivers a spacy interpretation, altering the original theme and introducing new synth layers. finally, london-based ashwort adds a toolish deep techno remix, only using fragments of the vocal to give more focus to the groove.

first time i heard this track out was d.jing with adrian gibson, booker/manager for the london jazz cafe in its hay day in the early 2000s, i thought it was some crazy obscusre early jacksons 45. i had no idea what it was but i liked it and it stuck with me. as my eyes were on 45 s at the time it passed me by until numero group reissued it on their fabulous soul messengers compilation (essential purchase if you don t own). after quite a bit of badgering rob sevier, co-owner of numero group, let this grace my format of choice, so here we are, both sides first outing as a single.

having recently played an eight hour set to a sold-out crowd at london’s oval space, the prolific dusky drop a trio of moody club tool tracks on 17 steps as they continue their european autumn/winter tour. a club tool in the most effective sense, lead track ’lydia’ is dark, nagging acid groover that builds and builds throughout its 6 hypnotic minutes. with all the melodic material based around the lydian scale, ‘lydia’ was originally inspired by a bizarre, trippy dream alfie had in which everything was all based on the lydian scale. a homage to classic techno, ‘bitter lake’ is a hard-hitting surge of looping, percussive energy and detroit-nodding rave stabs that build to a hoover-fuelled breakdown release. rounding off the trio, the brilliantly titled and uniquely composed ‘infinite libido’ again explores dusky’s more percussive tendencies and has been a regular feature in their dj sets for the past year.

repress , amadeus sees its catalog graced yet again by new zealand outfit chaos in the cbd. the kiwi brothers, birthed ben & louis helliker-hales, are no new faces to the label, or the wide variety of genre-bending acronyms they encompass. having recently relocated from tropical auckland to damp london earlier this year, the two take their productions along with them in their latest efforts, 816 to nunhead. title track and aside, 816 to nunhead, is tinged with whats left of summer. a nostalgic tune built for the sun and soaked in funk. its a track reminiscent of early french disco, almost as if built for the two robots themselves...

last spotted together on the cut some three years ago with their eponymous debut lp, the crew like kaidi tatham, akwasi mensah, matt lord, and dego ‘ranks’ mcfarlane reunite for this fresh 2000black 12&#8243,,,,,. off the christmas card list is apparently a precursor to a second album from the quartet and it’s the last 12&#8243,,,,, in a fine year for 2000black that saw the killer dego lp as the centrepiece. the a-side is dedicated to the title cut, an endlessly slinky boogie number that really showcases the collective musicality of this crew, whilst the b-side is split between “hurry whilst they are away” and “fila high”. the former is bugged out beat down west london-style, and the latter a killer latin-flecked cut.

jay lumen, one of the most quickly developing producers and known for his dynamic, pulsating grooves and pleasant vocalic tunes is back again on 100% pure. after having caused mayhem with his eleven earlier releases, he has proven to be labelled as one of the most famous and internationally appreciated artists of the electronic dance scene.

label founder mire composes the debut release on nuthe recordings. hailing from east london he sets the tone for the label with his own vision of techno and experimental music. the first track on the ep is distorted silhouettes a dark pulsating, bass heavy techno cut. sitting on the flipside is entropy this is more melodic, with a twisted analogue synth lead throughout and a pumping 4x4 kick. the final track is a haunting droney soundscape which which cuts like a razor at points and tails off as an outro into whats coming next on the imprint.

mysterious hardware tinkerer stephan stl laubner is back with a 3 track + locked groove ep on the london based imprint mutual friend recordings entitled listen up! mind puzzlin is exactly that with a luscious lead line that will twist your head accomponied by stls signature rough and overdriven percussion. smile function has a more ominous tone with repeated guitar plucks that plant themselves into your consciousness. stl builds the groove expertly whilst retaining an other-worldly feel to the track. wrong is a real groover with a growling bassline accomponied by weird and wonderful interwoven patterns coaxed out of stls synths. the locked groove, titled listen up! loop is a nice bonus for the more adventurous dj out there.

london-based artist the room below follows 2014’s dba debut (as part of the 015.5 v/a release) with a mixture of classic and experimental house sounds. born in bristol, raised in dorset and residing in the capital, henry keen aka the room below has been djing and collecting vinyl for over 20 years. as soundspecies alongside his brother he was championed by gilles peterson’s worldwide show and london institution cdr. the alias ‘the room below” was coined to coincide with henry’s analogue re-working of close friend paul white’s ‘rapping with’ lp. since then he has maintained this alias for his house and techno composition. they pay homage to the legendary chicago and detroit artists that inspired him back in the 80’s and 90’s.

a storming debut e.p from the persian prince, kasra v. a 21 year old from tehran who hit the shores of london four years ago armed with a bag of his uncle s boogie & disco and a taste in music belying his years. a residency at love fever has seen him holding his own with the likes of young marco, jonny rock, dj nature, and a radio show on the prodigious nts has seen him showcasing his tasted amongst the most listened on the station. learning his craft over the last 3 years on his trusty mpc2000, battery of fm keyboards and midi synced drum machines, his debut ep comes with a synth infused sound and a nod to 80s sleazy late night b movies.

spilt milk return with their second release from mr spilt milk himself tred benedict. tred drops a tasty original track full of groove and energy, alot like the man himself. on remix duties, label favourite marcashken turns a wonderful interpretation and the awesome mihai popoviciu takes things up a notch with a classy techno work out. the final track is another original but this time in collaboration with label partner st. bernard, with the pair dropping a rather murky minimal number with some choice words from one of their idols.

italian born producer distant memories with a four track ep via london based label, wunderkammer recordings. the ep starts with degrado (a1) that belongs to a segment of works named originally “untono” because of the minimum employment of sound elements in the composition. few and simple sonorities to describe the disapproval on the current conditions of things. compulsive (a2) is a track with a more deep feeling that proceeds untill the end around a sharp kick and spectral and obscure sounds. it is crystal clear that this tune represents a compulsive behavior. while mentale (b1) has a good speed with a deep ambience. is a mental but natural progression of sounds that evolves maintaining an incessant and hypnotic journey with a classic refrain that characterized late ’90 trance records. a never-ending cycle minimalism aesthetics of the whole ep.
