the latest release from the swiss duo larytta, entitled jura libre, is a chunky, massive, intelligent, colorful (in that full on tropical way) four-song collection of club bangers. to be exact the full set actually consists of two original songs with an in-house larytta remix a piece. the originals lean on pronounced inflections of playful, tricky, afro-tropical rhythms, while the reworks go for a more direct four-to-the-floor approach straight for the jugular. apart from the vibrant, tight production what unifies all of these tracks is a head nod towards that nineties club sound, especially that golden age acid rave material. this is music made not only by great producers, but heads that really know and love clubbing culture and history and know how to tastefully reference the past. the ep closes with bota mao pra encima which features brazilian emcee junior, and thats the point at which you start to question if this ep was truly cut in switzerland.

mike witcombe joins the kindisch family, bringing along a delicate sound for a fantastic journey with his delomi ep. the title track charms both the body and the soul, with an elegantly simple track unleashing a sea of warmth with beautiful chord-work and a steady stream of organic percussion. taking the torch further, almond dives a bit deeper, and travels a bit further, hypnotizing us into the night. acid meets house meets after-hour meets pure and warm intentions to create an intricate and almost spiritual experience. next, mike witcombe and felix warmuth balance chaos and control with islagrande, representing the symbiosis between artist and machine, opening doors to realms rarely seen and inviting all to join the experience.

invisible inc bring out their second compilation ep, this time vaguely focussing on the interzone between cosmic disco, balearic house, psychedelic * glam rock* and seedy, tribal, dungeon acid.

smeur continues it’s journey into melodic trippy house. the third release features two artists take on a track from the same starting point. both sides are based on the same set of samples. but while side a reminisces early orbital in its theme side b is a somber excursion into another subterranean world. both tracks will keep the floor interested with it’s different approach to house music.

the double drop label present the second of three parts from the invisible cities collective, made up of luca c & brigante plus guests. following the summers moments in between (featuring ivan smagghe remixes), in my garden finds the guys carving a sumptuous slo-mo house groove, with a rather special secret collaborator on vocal duties. the result is something lush and unique. the original is backed with a fine interpretation from the mole, and the super cool edge of our love completes the package. the new music from invisible cities doesnt stop there. next up is part 3, sunkissed with remixes from apiento and special dubs from mad professor.

the r zone series excels at raw, inventive, off kilter club music from a range of mysterious artists. that fine tradition continues once more here with another four cuts of inventive music that takes cues from techno, idm, acid and house. lumidei is all wonky drums and out of time hits and is a brilliantly weird cut full of spacious atmospherics. mynheer is built on a bed of broken beats, knocking hits and metallic textures that all tumble and fall around loosely and invitingly.

for our 9th instalment, holdie gawn takes the lead and is delivering his first solo ep for sylphe, while micawber takes a break. on the a-side, holdie gawns natural habitat, we find yborg, a 12 minute long piece of darker, glitched-up techno which moves slowly yet forcefully. expanding into a terrain of bleeps and dissonant harmonies, ‘’yborg’’ number remains loyal to the twisted sylphe electronics we have been used to. on the b side we have t & t, a rolling, broken beat swingy techno-house jam which grooves effortlessly and shows a different of holdie. wonky, bubbling basslines and stretched voices complete the mosaic of holdie’s the first b side. our 9th release will be out in time for our 3rd birthday, around mid-late february

as the d edge label clocks up release number 24, it turns to the phil hinter ensemble for a fantastic three track package that is filled with fresh house vibes. phil hinter ensemble is a joint project by phil s main pillars philogresz and german simon hinter. they have ties with labels like their own phil, love unlimited vibes and of course d-edge. previous eps have gone down well around the world and simon hinter s smart grooves and sample based fill-ins blends with the wombastic bass and shivering synth lines of philogresz perfectly. up first is the owl, a squelchy, synthetic house track with lively drums and chords and magical trumpets all making for a party starting track. it is perfectly arranged and expertly musical, unlike much of today s plastic and sample heavy sounds. in the air then gets even more playful with glossy synth stabs, rumbling bass and diva vocals all bouncing along in a charismatic style that is full of colour. struggle then gets intimate and final with scurrying little percussive sounds, burst of afro vocal, down low sine waves and icy snares all making for a perfectly seductive minimal techno brew

over the past several years, j(ay).a.d has released several eps touching on footwork, dubstep, grime and dancehall, approaching dance music with a wide open lens that tends to blur accepted genre lines. a bjork co-sign earlier last year jettisoned the amsterdam-based artist into the popular consciousness. raised in suriname, j(ay).a.d is the consummate dance music outsider and despite living in amsterdam, his music hardly ever fits in with the citys house and techno hegemony. the ogri ai ep is very much a blueprint record, simultaneously paranoid and dark, its seeped in industrial dread and natural beauty. and while many of j(ay).a.ds contemporaries attempt to create more alien sounding music at the expense of a human element, the ogri ai ep has been a overlooked milestone for the hybrid footwork & grime realm, and its now back on re-stock.

willie burns (the trilogy tapes/wt records/ l.i.e.s. records) complements this unusual walk in the woods by absorbing it into his warehouse banger signature. burns rework focuses on micro events of the original to create a sort of granular house version out of them. the adventure continues on a somewhat melancholic turn with we have been here before and sometimes as the b side. while we have been before is a more dancefloor-oriented take to krautrocks signature synthline layering, sometimes is norwells venture into a more techno universe than he’s mostly associated with to come out with a soothing, yet banging work. as digital bonuses, norwell offers glimpse a short but catchy synth jam riddled with different layers of complexity. this piece is then taken into obscurity by farbwechsel records boss s olbricht for a ride into a 80s-cyberpunk club where people are trying to dance their problems away in a dystopian world.

hot on the heels of his brilliant superfoods trilogy of albums on bbe, australian production powerhouse inkswel returns with a brand new solo effort entitled unity 4 utopia . stellar collaborators steve spacek, recloose, crazy p, lay-far, kid sublime, mark de clive-lowe & colonel red all make an appearance help to make inkswel s quest for musical utopia a reality, and the album certainly does not disappoint. as the man himself puts it: -we need to work together if we want happiness and furthermore if we want positive change- this is mirrored in music, collaboration being key-. echoes of early hip hop, 80 s boogie, disco and house can all clearly be heard, all woven together by inkwel s uniquely soulful, futuristic yet vintage production style. drawn together by an abundantly positive feeling, vocal performances and beats are all faultlessly smooth and highly polished, but somehow the album retains a real sense of fun. already touring tirelessly, unity 4 utopia could well be the project which elevates mr inkswel from an underground phenomenon into a household name.

youth isn’t usually associated with wisdom, or depth or complexity for that matter. most 22 year-olds are still figuring out how a washing machine works but in the case of howes (the solo project of manchester-based john howes) he’s making electronic music that is operating on innovative and experimental levels one might expect from a hardened career musician hitting their stride. having released a more house-oriented 12” on melodic a couple of years ago, his debut album proper is a record that is as expressive as it is cohesive. it’s a release that floats between nocturnal stillness and insomniac driven intensity. the shift, howes says, “comes from the forced and narrow nature of a lot of electronic music. most modern electronic music to me is too safe in terms of ambition, sound design and intention.”
