there are many ways for a band or an artist to compile an album: some make it in a week and some let the process go on longer. the latter approach does often mean that that the record will not be better than had it been recorded and mixed within a short amount of time, rather the contrary. however, there are those albums that just could not be made within in a week or a month, those compilation of songs that needed the time to melt together to form an album. fontäns third album titled fontän, released on hoga nord rekords is that kind of an album. put the opening track mangsebung on, then stay with the record until the closer shadows rings out and you will go clear, sharp, and mildly messed up by the listening experience because this is an extremely well directed trip in mind-altering music! this album needed time to reach such heights.

‘race to zero’ is the new album by musician and composer john matthias and producer, musician and composer jay auborn.
the album’s starting point was a series of acoustic improvisations recorded in a variety oflocations, from a 700 year old chapel in the devon countryside to a basement studio in reykjavík, iceland. in an attempt to create a fractured sense of space reflective of the digital condition, the duo found themselves working within a place that could only exist in the digital landscape.
by crushing the recordings through a hundred different virtual rooms of reverb and other chaotic digital processes, they collided, soared and splintered into sweeping new rhythms, melodies and drones.
the outcome is a unique landscape that blurs the line between the virtual and physical worlds.

on thanksgiving 1989, kmart employee and audio enthusiast mark davis wandered behind the customer service desk to check out the store’s sound system, which looped muzak and top 40 plus ads and announcements under the banner of “kmrt, the kmart radio network.” when he found last month’s tape hadn’t been thrown out yet, he pocketed it and made a habit of doing this, collecting 56 tapes from 1989-1992. in september 2015, davis uploaded the tapes to archive.org with the humble intention of preserving them. but within a few weeks he became an internet celebrity among obscure media fans and supplemented the collection with reel-to-reel tapes from the 70s and 80s thanks to tom schwarzrock, who acquired them serendipitously along with a deck he purchased. the tapes are like a consumerist time capsule, a vaporwave trove of eerily familiar corporate ephemera extracted from its original context and purpose. similarly, attention kmart choppers is composed of pieces from this collection chopped up, resculpted, and mosaicked together by juicy the emissary, forming a new, distinctly contemporary sound while inheriting a haunting nostalgia that provokes memories burrowed deep in the subconscious

trumpeter/ composer sefi zisling incorporates afro-jazz with psychedelic funk in this new solo project. sefi is known as the top trumpeter of tel aviv jazz & funk scene. while still attending high school, sefi performed with various funk and groove acts, laying the foundations for many more musical encounters and fruitful collaborations with other members of the ever-growing tel aviv music scene. sefi performed with bands such as the ramirez brothers, kutiman orchestra, funknstein, gili yalo, and many more. today, after fifteen years of recording and performing all over the world alongside almost everyone within the israeli music scene, sefi is taking a step forward to release his debut solo album.

roots in heaven is a berlin-based act that could very easily capitalize on his past accomplishments within the world of intrepid electronic music. as a label owner, resident dj at cutting-edge clubs, and accomplished solo artist behind a number of conceptually unique full-length albums, the conceiver of this project won’t likely need any introduction to the intrepid fans of electronic music.

this is kollaps first full length album after having gained recognition from releasing vinyl only excursions on grade10 records and remixing work for darkstar on warp records. the record has been pressed on to 180 gram vinyl and is has been mastered at star delta. the album comes with a full colour glossy sleeve and centre labels which reflect the music within. they have had their music played by benji b as well as radio 6 and other more underground radio stations. their last release on grade10 got great reviews in the fader, who said i rarely have the occasion to use the word magnificent, but the releases a-sidean epic 7-minute number titled misery has squeezed all the other words out of my head.

in 2016. i rented out a small piano studio in east london for nearly the whole year and set out to write an introspective, trendless, and mostly beatless album. inspired by albums from this mortal coil and scott walker, who also sought freedom to work outside of the expectations of their previous work, i limited the instrumentation to mostly an acoustic piano and effects, which left space to expose a lot of emotional vulnerabilities about myself and people close to me. writing lullabies about being a mother in a dystopian world, with pensive words about swimming against the current as a female artist, i felt free enough to tell untold truths that i’ve never felt comfortable talking about within music. free, liberated, empowered. naked.

paulino vieira, bana, and their legendary troupe, voz de cabo verde, made lisbon the headquarters spearheading the musical revolution taking place within cape verdean emigre communities across europe in the 1980s. musicians from across the diaspora would eagerly travel to the portuguese capital to record. but in smaller pockets, second-generation krioulu musicians were independently contributing to one of the most lush periods of cultural innovation by immigrants in europe. in 1986, a group of nine teenagers — antonio monteiro, ambrosio gomes, emilio borges, fefa cabral, to pereira, pedro varela, celeste monteiro, clarisse, germano shares — formed the largely unknown, often overlooked, but consistently brilliant band, pilon. combining traditional funana rhythms and the hybrid colazouk style with psychedelic synth work and rugged guitar ostinatos, pilon refined their sound for years until releasing these recordings as part of their debut album, tradicao, in 1993, with a tight-knit unit of just five remaining members. the band is still a popular mainstay for parties in the cape verdean circles of frankfurt, paris, lyon, marseille, rotterdam, and geneva.

second release from the label offers up broken rhythms, jacking grooves and deep spirituals. hold me explores lyricism within tight repetitious rhythm, on which saxophonist tyrone isaac-stuart explores hook lines and story telling whilst bassist jordan christo maintains control over the low-end spectrum. that he man of hers melds jacking, upbeat tempo with romanticism and melancholy on top, with louis ktisti providing guitar accompaniment. one s own permanent faith, on the other hand, provides for a moodier and more subdued spiritual dance rhythm, which warms one up before the spiritual explorations in would you tell me about you. in this final track, the guitar rhythms provided by jabriel alsuhaimi and spiritual exorcism of the saxophone by tyrone isaac-stuart present a different angle in the approach towards discovering the endless groove.

artcub records is an new open-minded techno label created by marco gayo from france. the label will propose somes deep to raw techno in his futures releases. here the first work from the rising star of nederlands: qindek. darko esser was the man who pulled qindek and gave him a shot at his own wolfskuil-label to release music in vinyl. people like laurent garnier, rolando, norman nodge, ben sims, dvs1, pfirter, benny rodriguez (rod), sandrien and Âme incorporated qindek’s release in their sets.

paul blackford returns to cpu this time donning a 7inch downtempo tip. light years vinyl takes 2 of the highlights from the accompanying lp, all of which demonstrate his versatility in expressing his hip hop and funk influences from an electronic music perspective. on first pass you might think you are listening to nightmares on wax, but without the heavy sampling as blackford favours creating his sounds from scratch. comparisons to photeks hidden camera can be made in terms of atmosphere but keeping things within a slower trip hop framework. light years is for chilling out, but theres a strong temptation to mix hip-hop vocals over the top due to the lps solid instrumental foundations.

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. without artwork cover - only standard cover (see picture)...ltd warehouse / backstock - the midnite ep is the follow up ep to delano smith s sunrise ep on third ear recordings, released at the end of 2008. the sunrise ep was one of the underground house records of 2009, and the midnite ep is set to be one of the underground house records of 2010. both delano and us think the midnite ep is better than sunrise. after the sunrise ep, we decided to do it again and maintain the theme and name the next ep after a moment, a feeling within the dance floor experience. we decided on midnite. once again we have selected four tracks from a selection that delano sent us. you can play these tracks at any time of the day or night, and we encourage you to experiment in this way. however, dropping any of these tracks at midnite will ensure that you, your dance floor and all the people in the room will be set up for the journey. :-) a1: a special kind is constructed in the classic style of filtered samples from another record over a fat (really fat as this is a record made in detroit) kick drum. the samples are from ashford and simpson s stay free from 1979 on warner bros records. it is a sign of a good dance music producer that s/he can take an already great track and turn it into a dance floor bomb. delano has done this with a special kind. 117bpm. a2: dee s gruv is a very deep, very atmospheric groove. a crisp snare, a growling bass, a kick drum of varying intensity though the track framing the vibe, and a subtly modulating chord that goes on forever. hi-hats and ride cymbal move in and out of the track as it ebbs and flows. this kind of deep, grooving suspension of time is becoming a delano smith speciality. 122bpm. b1: the exploration is delano working through the same ideas as he explores in dee s gruv. hitting harder and driving faster than dees gruv, the exploration is a continuation of delano s search for the ultimate deep house groove. all students of electronic dance music should check this.

mysterious berlin based label mask preps its debut release titled ‘lemmy’ with four untitled cuts this april. a new series born out of an established german imprint, mask’s enigmatic debut release was produced using a selection of analogue gear including a moog slim phatty, e-mu sp-1200 and nord rack 2x. the a side begins with a track built around a tightly programmed drum loop which subtly builds, laced with mix-slicing hats and sub-low kicks whilst stretched out chords dissipate around a crunchy synth lead. the second production is twisted and dusty, using flanging and reverberated effects to lead towards a distorted breakdown, driven from the depths by gusts of full bodied snares and a growling sub line. on the flip, dulcet tones of a female vocalist join lush melodic chords to cleanse the palette, whilst working within the confines of a subdued yet crisp drum machine groove. the final track then strips things back even further, employing minimalist percussive hits and a warm bass lead, leaving space for its soothing female vocals to do the talking

archeo are at it again, finding yet more hidden delights from italy s bountiful musical past. paolo modugno s brise d automne originally came out in 1988 and has since been highly coveted by record collectors fascinated with the new age delights contained within. archeo have gone all out for this reissue, pressing the album on heavy vinyl to allow the music to really breathe, and adding a second disc with two tracks previously unavailable on vinyl. the curious fusion of organic and electronic elements with a daring approach to production makes for one of the most unique records you re likely to hear all year.

“muen” is based on the concepts of “muen”, “kugai” and “raku” all referring to tactical “freedoms” or “liberties” within the structures of medieval japan. a reflection on concepts that have been lost since the seventeenth century, according to historian yoshihiko amino. while “muen” echoes of the seminal early 90s merzbow, playing on the relationship between metal noise and instrumental oscillations, it differs in interaction between the two. where the pure noise used to dominate, the instrumentation has taken over, making the whole soundscape oscillate and vibrate. each side is one long piece unfolding, an ocean of tones and frequencies, a catharsis of sound, dynamics and power. “muen” is a vitally sonic experience from a true master and innovator of electronic music for followers both new and old. “muen” is limited to 375 copies
