repress 2017 , allez! as the curtains come down on another crazy summer of love, apollonia drop their latest release courtesy of io mulen - the ukranian rude boy who appeared on the label at the beginning of the year with ‘unknown to the unknown’. he’s back with a hefty six-track package which is sure to please his fans, and win him a whole new army of supporters. we get straight to business with the first track, ‘rdm37’, one of those trusty apollonia bouncing bombs. skittish beats work off a sublime groove, while io keeps the background full of interesting sounds, boings, cheeps and all manner of whimsical effects, introducing more and more as the track progresses. by the midpoint you’re so gripped by the track that your whole body is moving uncontrollably, super glued to the rhythm. next up, it’s ‘xdt54’ coming through with a deep, persuasive bassline that jigs around in the low end luring you into its web. simple, polished percussive elements keep things moving at a pace while subtle keys and barely-there vocals add further layers to this catchy little number. the third track in on this lengthy ep is ‘mpc13’, a walk on the sensual side. vocal snippets are interspersed among sultry pads, skipping four to the floor beats and a sleazy b-line to create a delectable slice of dance floor naughtiness. this one flirts with you as it writhes around, taking you ever deeper…four tracks in we have ‘zgb41’, another alluring cut that has all the hallmarks of a deep house classic. those shimmering pads, a bassline that feels like it was born in nineties chicago, diamond-cut beats and a general feeling of what we would call ‘true house music’. there’s soul, there’s funk and there’s realness, what more can you ask for?ypt58’ keeps us locked in to that hypnotic groove with an insistent b-line holding things down - together with the infectious rhythm cultivated by the drum arrangement, it’s a killer combo. put those together with the smooth atmospherics plus synth lines staggering in and out of the background and you’ve got yourself a roller. last but definitely not least is ‘zxy22’, a wistful slice of technoid funk which has a delicate melody at its foundation. as it develops we get sucked in to layer upon layer of beauty, from the analogue low end to the electric guitar riff – each layer complementing the other and creating a symphony of sounds that acts as a perfect way to close out the ep and will no doubt end plenty of dj sets, when it’s released. so monsieur io (mulen) returns to apollonia with an instant classic, make sure you snap it up right away. magnifique!

produced and recorded in 1965 during a time when chicago soul was one of the most influential sounds in r&b.the dontells entered the studio and cut two tracks that put that sound on full display. the session was led by producer calvin carter, world famous arranger johnny pate-along with the cities top musicians. these tracks were never released and have only been heard by a few people until now. the a side “move on down the line” grabs you from the first second the needle drops. a mid tempo love song with a trademark arrangement from pate and a vocal melody and approach in the style of chicago’s king of soul, curtis mayfield. “there goes a fool” is the b side and is a reminder why the dontells were one of the best groups out of the windy city. another brilliant production with a top notch arrangement. horns, strings, a swinging backbeat and that signature chicago vocal sound lead by the sweet harmonies of nate, leroy, manuel & ralph. this is no doubt a 60’s soul classic in 2017!

shaun reeves & tuccillo mark visionquest’s first release of 2017 with their ‘origin 99’ ep, comprising four collaborative original tracks from the pair. individually shaun reeves and tuccillo have been driving forces in the realms of underground house for quite some time, collectively releasing on labels such as raum, 2020 vision, circus company and more. this time round though the pair’s material finds a home with visionquest, label co-founder shaun reeves joins forces with tuccillo, following his solo ‘full time’ ep on the imprint in 2016, for a new synergistic release. up first is title track ‘origin 99’ which sees the pair deliver a smooth understated house style via organic percussion, winding dub stabs and tension building atmospheric to create a subtly evolving six and a half minute cut. ‘one two five’ follows and lays focus on a more stripped-back aesthetic with sparse rhythmic hits, tumbling sub hits and a dreamy bell chime melody. ‘prowler’ opens the latter half of the package with soft chord sequences and wandering delayed synth lines running alongside 303 bass and shuffled snares before ‘blood moon’ closes the package on a raw minimalistic vibe with swirling dub echoes and intricately evolving percussion.

rico puestel is in charge for our cocoon recordings 144th release. rico is an producer animal who released more than 100 tracks & remixes since 2005 under various project names such as dinamoe, central scrutinizer and of course under his main moniker rico puestel. the enormous amount of productions shaped ricos knowledge and taste and his new cocoon release neyst and enokid seems to be the logical result of his long journey through the techno-universe. puestels style is very unique and merges elements of dark and hypnotic mainfloor techno as well as orchestral sounds and even industrial elements. neyst is the perfect hypnotic and dark techno circle that keeps on progressing and building up into sheer madness. no fast food, no leightweight, this is heavy techno business! enokid comes with a little more of a chicago house vibe however it is again still deep in puestels very own style. we especially fancy the crazy break in the middle with the spaced out room effect part and the melody coming in after the break. as stompy and musclepacked this track is, it still seems to be very musical and deep at the same time - what a trip! this one demands a good and proper sound system, well what other cocoon release doesnt?

“dramatest” is a collection of experimental library music published in 1974 by fonovideo and signed by oscar rocchi (and his moniker chiarosi) - an excellent pianist and composer, who worked with many italian jazz heavyweights - and fabio fabor. “dramatest” consists of 14 slightly eccentric explorations of the electronic spectrum, casting pure experimentalism, melody and no fillers whatsoever. one of the best examples of the lost art of italian libraries!

it is kind of difficult to imagine tv or radio shows accompanied by tracks like “neutroni”, “mr. mysterious”, “fucina diabolica” or “idillio cosmico”, but in 1973 - the year this gem was released - italian tv was often surprising the audience with innovative shows, likely to host music such as fabor’s compositions. listening again to these 14 short compositions is still an extraordinary experience if we consider their impact and influence on contemporary music and on hip labels of our days like ghost box. along with “pape satan”, this is probably the best fabio fabor ever.

timely outing from two grand masters of exploratory electronics. kassel jaeger is the moniker of french musician françois bonnet who works at the grm and has released a number of books including the highly regarded the order of sounds, a sonorous archipelago published by urbanomic in 2016. jim o rourke is known to most through his explorations of the song and shapes, the high and low, the east and south. wakes on cerulean is a joint adventure where process folds upon process and the operation of procedure remains unknown. amongst a mysterious cloud of excited high frequencies tiny whistling howls. frog leaps in technique lay out a thrilling and uplifting journey that runs from the soothing to ecstatic and back to the buoyant again. wakes on cerulean is a staggering feast of the joys found in electronic process. a malleable bubble of hovering excitement, melody and joyous refrain.

noumen - white silence we first spotted noumen in 2012 and alongside cygnus was one of the first to be asked to join cpu. over 4 years later he finally delivers an ep and lp that is a true labour of love. abstract electronics of the highest quality. it s idm, but with that essential hip hop influence making it immeasurably more addictive and pleasing. with plenty of melody and swing layered over intricate rhythm programming, it leaves listeners stunned. white silence is taken from the forthcoming album apeiron. remaining 3 tracks are exclusive to this ep.

baertaub’s newest release wolke welcomes you with bazalt, a very tight and sharply shaped minimal techno track designed to awake your senses one by one from head to toe with small noisey cuts and bits that show their faces at certain times to draw a sonic geometrical map. next up is a relatively darker track rather than rain which again features those alien bits and is enriched with an unexpected and grande synth melody that somehow fits perfectly with the dark mood and alienating sound of the track. b side opens with the ztrl remix of bazalt which focuses on that witty geometrical face of the track and lifts it to an upper level with slowly building beats and hypnotizing loops. the ep closes off with the title track, wolke, which follows a very interesting trajectory: a tense sounding chord line is softened by a groovy bass and dubby touches and percussive samples which in the end provides an unexpectedly feel good ending to a positively minimal ep.

having done such wonderful work alongside wolf muller on the sound of glades album, cass makes a welcome return with an expansive album release on emotional response. the german producer s ambient tendencies blossom here, occasionally meeting with laconic drums as on u but primarily dealing in huge swathes of melody. djs will want to hold out for the dramatic pulse of ann, where a more pronounced drum set makes for one of the album s most club-ready moments. theres a strong variety of tones and moods across youth sessions, from the strafing arpeggios of running to the bliss-out shapeless swirl of prismatic prolog, and this ensures that the album will not dull with repeated listens.

nostalgic, soulful and, of course, boogie-woogie. thats how belgian dj producer boogie belgique (aka oswald cromheecke) describes the enticing combination of styles and sources from different decades that make up his music. taking vintage inspirations, most notably from swing and jazz eras, and merging them with contemporary beats and textures is the young producers forte. this is pleasingly evident on volta, the latest boogie belgique album for the cold busted label. jungle law gives a glimpse into boogie belgiques sonic palette. tough hip hop beats and funky live guitar follow an intro of jungle ambience as a trumpet presents the melody. soon some swingy big band jazz enters the song in an almost ghostly manner, while the insistent beat keeps the dance floor moving. album opener go slow shows a different side to the coin giving the listener an uptempo broken beat rhythm, some bouncy bass guitar, snippets of string loops, and a lovely, forlorn vocal line that echoes the past. its a beautiful concoction, and boogie belgique delivers on many aspects of this style throughout his eleven track album. volta is a satisfying trip in an aural time machine.

alek s offers up another dose of pensive techno vibes in his “paradise lost” ep. side a opens up with “bold”, a slice of laid back while still pounding techno, boasting zippy synths with an unmistakable analog flavour. it’s closely followed by andres zacco’s rework of “honey wheat”, an apt reconstruction of the original that’s aimed squarely at the dancefloor. the argentinian producer and recent ilian tape alumni dives in with a powerful groove, cutting its way through a suspended atmosphere full of spaced out sounds. over on the b-side we’re greeted with “paradise lost”, a slow-paced melody that gradually shifts into a dreamy groove filled with spaced out drums and abstract delays. last but not least, the original version of “honey wheat” is a somewhat atmospheric, yet functional floor warmer that fits a resigned groove.
