the phantom is older than you think, both figuratively and literally. his debut on vinyl was on *it s my mike* by the funky force 2 back in 1987 on amanda records. in 1988 he recorded as part of the group the force and recorded *the mission* with the producer powercut. he is probably best known for being one of the main mcs in cult group dynametrix, who released an ep in 1991 and an lp in 1994 called *a measure of force* on kold sweat records. he also appeared on three tracks on the unsung heroes lp *unleashed* as well as appearing with tom dice on *thug killer*.

ian pooley initiates his new techno label montage by resurrecting his silvershower alias. best known for a pair of 12inchs released on richie hawtins plus 8 in 1996 (with a further ep released on the same label in 2011), silvershower has been pooleys preferred alias for his tougher, darker records for nearly 20 years.

berlin based mutewax records strikes again with its eagerly awaited second release, various artists 02. label founder mutecells cursed casts a long dark shadow over the dance floor with an electrifying and slightly acidic melody. hector oaks reductions gets straight to the point with an aggressive and powerful followup to his last release on key vinyl. msdmnr takes a more placid approach with vortex vapour, building energy with clear and crisp progressions. urbano employs soft melodies to counterbalance a chilling journey into an unknown world.

we dont question the relevance of techno in the current musical landscape, but look back ten years or so and youll figure things were a little stagnant and uninspiring. the techno scene in berlin certainly did a lot to spruce new life in the genre and people like merbeck with his vault series releases were somehow pioneers of the industrial-influenced sound we now celebrate and take for granted. now landing on m_rec ltd. with a 3 track ep, the berlin resident fuses his aggressive sound with the hypnotic, dark-room elements that have defined the labels vision. m_rec ltd. starts 2015 with a nasty release: three tracks that fit any moment of a proper techno set.

abyssopelagic is the third release on tresor berlin resident marcel heeses label finitude music. this time he teamed up with d_func. aka legendary berlin producer alexander kowalski who has been around for almost 20 years and surely needs no further introduction. the title track is a slow piece of nautical techno aiming at the bigger floors. as the title suggests the b-side includes a stripped-down version of abyssopelagic for the deeper moments on the floor

deep dubby techno on this new sound architecture. the label originally founded in rotterdam and currently operated from antwerp still going strong on a irregular base with tight modern techno and house releases. this one is maybe the first thats more or less rooted in the best dub techno traditions with a modern twist, remaining those nice swampy moist synths and seductive grooves. deadbeat and hreno come together to produce a dub techno tune of mcconaugheyan proportions.

over the years electric deluxe has become a beacon for established names to test out new projects, and its with great pleasure we welcome another unknown into the fold. arad is the fresh-faced solo guise of dara smith, best known as one half of lakker. together with partner ian mcdonell, the pair have been making music for over a decade, in recent years honing their insidious and deftly idiosyncratic take on techno for labels like blueprint, stroboscopic artefacts and r&s.

the occasional (but always excellent) street edits series returns, this time with a trio of high-grade scalpel works from chicago re-edit hero rahaan. as usual, the source material is dusty and obscure, and the reworks revelatory. -city of disco- is in many ways typical of rahaan s work, with carefully cuts and loops being used to create a thumping, house style groove (admittedly one that pays due reverence to the source material). there s more of a celebratory, soulful feel about the impeccable -strung out-, which turns a little-known disco-soul gem into a huggable dancefloor classic. best of all, though, is -brighten you up-, which sits somewhere between later electrofunk and early house, a proto-proto gem, perhaps. either way, it s a killer.

former padded cell and bronx dogs man richard sen has made some great records in his time, and songs of pressure is up there with the best of them. joining the dots between murky dub disco, horror soundtracks and ebm, it layers spooky, delay-laden synthesizer motifs and wonky vocal samples atop a heavy dub rhythm and punchy machine drums. pals andrew weatherall and timothy j fairplay deliver a bongo-laden, dubbed-out revision (part wayward exotica, part humid balearic dub), while acca strips the track down to its nare bones for a ket-addled dub. its a fantastic 12inch, and limited to just 99 copies. you snooze, you lose.
