iceland’s volruptus returns to bjarkis bbbbbb with five esoteric cuts titled alien agenda. releasing on bbbbbb at the end of last year, volruptus has emerged swiftly on the european party scene, with the icelandic artist popping up on line-ups all over the continent. following releases by norways eod and fellow icelandic talent, lord pusswhip, alien agenda is bbbbbbs third record of the year continuing bjarkis progressive tastes for innovative electronic scandinavian artists. first up, svi,nasti,a 3000 deploys a synthetic, fast-pitched techno revolver fused with space- induced, twisted modulations. a scratch tool titled itchy and scratchy show follows before launching into su,rmatur a celestial 303 synth line layered over scattered electro drums, together providing a magical transcendental experience. alien agenda is suitably an eccentric, idm tinged number – with shades of acid and powerful bass shrills becoming the focus here. last up, misanthropgy (dark stoff) provides an energetic rolling percussive loop, intensifying naturally through cryptic, high-pitched melodies.

too smooth christ returns to supergenius records and widens his singular approach to introspective dance music to new musical horizons. infinite fall dmz is a slow house jam built around a hypnotic and endless fm pattern and a strong chorus bass, emphasized by a myriad of shiny bittersweet 101 sparks. pheqs125, originally made for tsc current live act, triggered such keen reactions in clubs that we decided to cut it down. its an acidish banger, elaborated around a 303 pattern, a rave detuned bassline and a b-more breakbeat, tickled by synthetic voices. with its rainforest chords and melodies and its muffled breakbeat, the eponymous track with you in mind is a love declaration between balearic house and old-school jungle / idm. etoile closes the ep with its uk bass vibe, a combination of tribal drum patterns and a grime beat and narrative bassline which will attract you in some mysterious caverns where the magic monsters hide.

chicago house pioneer dj sneak and russian export tripmastaz have proven themselves to be a formidable pairing since their first ep landed on sneak’s imprint, i’m a house gangster, in 2014. in july, they add to their joint discography with a three-tracker dispatch on cassy’s burgeoning label, kwench records. the label’s sixth release, cassy takes a step back and gives this collaborative duo yet another outlet to showcase their dancefloor fodder, which follows releases on kaluki music, mr. nice guy, reptile dysfunction, ovum recordings and, of course, i’m a house gangster. extraterrestrial intelligence reminds fans of not just their deftness in producing tough house cuts, but also their prowess at manipulating the roland tb-303 to deal a solid smacking of acid. ‘ufo’ reaches out to roughen up the humanoids of this planet with the 303’s distinctive squelch and those clattering drum machine rhythms – a track that’s guaranteed to get you twisted. gruff vocals on ‘click thang’ break through as a tough bassline ensures your participation on the floor, and ‘last daze of dizko’ maintains momentum with a thumping bassline that any peak-time burner should possess.

after previously releasing starship commander woooo woooos mastership lp, left ear records have continued excavating the archives of the artist more formally known as omer coleman jr. the result is two handpicked mid 80’s instrumentals salvaged from the original master tapes, as well as an extended vocal edit on the flip for good measure. after laying his alter ego to rest omer made a handful of electronic releases on his own kansas based remo label. of these releases left ear has selected their two favourite instrumentals: lovin babe sure is fun and so good. lovin babe sure is fun was originally released in 85 and was created to celebrate a time in america where the economy was good, people were happy and love was in the air, the essence of which omer captured using his roland 808 and 303 in what may best be described as acid-boogie. so good on the other hand is a sensual downtempo cut shaped with heavy-bass, telephone samples and guitar solos that conjures images of late night rendezvous and compromising scenarios.

the aesthetics of this ep is related to the universe electro / idm early 90 s by a choice of very precise synthesizer. p6, sh- 101, tb-303, tr-808 and to coordinate the whole an rs7000 which comes to rhythm this refusal of modernity. foreign sequence digs into the techniques of the past to find the answers, he shows his know-how here and uses it to express a multitude of emotions between nostalgia and optimism.

after the first two 12inches from label founder deep88 himself, ascii records turns to a whole host of different characters to remix those tracks with some stunning and varied results. luis cl is up first, taking a decidedly mellow approach to harmony that tips into a heavy lidded early 90s deep house mood perfectly, while rnr take the robert owens-featuring believe in you and make it into a stirring, tense but ultimately emotional acid-laced floor track. rhythm 2 soul do a gentle job on la beija, mhcrew take a larry heard-esque approach on rotation and jimini lets the space in the mix tell its own story.

yoruba records is proud to welcome back toto chiavetta with our latest release, nagnu jubo (remixes). this follow up to the debut album, impermanence, includes remixes by osunlade as well as new and unreleased work from toto himself. kicking off proceedings is the yoruba soul mix of nagnu jubo, a deep and smooth groove rich in personality. the warm chords reel you in as the underlying rhythm engages and inspires. the yoruba soul dub retains the warmth of the original without the track’s signature chant. this is followed by a new, previously unreleased, version of minds. originally appearing on impermanence, this version is decidedly more floor focused. a 303-style bassline keeps this moving right along as percussive elements add texture and drive to this forward thinking dance tune. finally, closing out this release is hunters, a track which showcases totos dark and techy side. this expressive tune is ripe with emotion and will have discerning listeners locked in introspection while their feet do work on the floors below them.

200 copies - vinyl only - giant records sees in the new year with a killer ep from a bright new producer from poland, by the name of, mariuz kryska, mariuz offers up two peak time grooves here with remix duties falling on, sascha dive and giant head honcho grant dell. the first track up is low jam, which sees the original mix dive into a deep drum lead swing reminiscent of old todd terry beats, that have gone before, all topped off with a spoken word and tight hats and rides. next up is sascha dive - giving low jam a slowed down dubby feel with some sweet dubbed-out stabs that evolves into that deep house sound that sascha has mastered over the years. next cut is no perspective mariuzs original mix is a relentless bass heavy work out which weaves around some slick west coast gangsta rhymes and detroit style strings and pads. grant dells take on no perspective leans on the detroit style pad, from the original and adds some off kilter 808 beats that sit nicely along some smart 303 stabs and the gangsta rhyme which then merges into a slick techno jam with added breakbeats.

the jam starts with -orange sunshine- (doesn t it always?) of course as usual it takes a while to kick in and by the time it does it s obvious helltown acid militia are back with their time warping spaceship. by the second track -still turning- the fog clears a little, but there are still echoes of a time past, what is it? can t quite put my finger on it... on the flip we are met with chunky 909 rhythms in -more important-, because what s more important than a 909 rhythm track? for the final outing -broadcast- (which may be the real hidden gem here) the tempo drops and there s chord stabs, strings and talk of ufos. its at this point that you realise that the label on the record has a picture of mitzi the cat, in a space suit, holding a white 303!! this acid really is a trip.

cignol fires up the blasters and sets a course for hidden galaxies - a 303 fuelled electro trip into the outer reaches of the unknown universe. delving through throbbing gristly bass lines, pounding, intricate click clack drum programming and aquatic, electric cool.

réminiscences is a selection of 8 standards of the band revisited in a more punchy and electro style compared to the original versions but preserving what made the specificity of the opera multi steel sound. indeed, on boosted rhythms and fully re-recorded vocals, those new versions use sounds and “historical” instruments cherished by the band since its beginnings: tr 808, tr 606, tb 303, elex, casio vl-1, recorders, medieval choirs and various samples. the texts have been preserved in their entirety. the tracks are taken from albums such as cathedral (un froid seul, du son des cloches...) a contresens (les sens, las), les douleurs de l’ennui, la légende dorée (fureur en asie) and even from the very first vinyl ep of the band (massabielle). the artworks of the disc and sleeve, as well as the video clip coming together, have been realized by alan cassiano, who based his graphic work on visual atmospheres inherited from the very first vinyl ep of the band, using images taken from the encyclopedia (xviiith century) and perspectives by jan vredeman de vries (xvith century). finally, reminiscences is not a simple compilation of tracks, but rather a kind of travel through the different ages of opéra multi steel’s music rearranging/revisiting classic songs and images through nowadays eyes and ears.

everything’s possible, nothing has to be, probably best describes the current selection. while artik brutally transforms the industrial into the techno format, chris moss acid and spaceinvasion ride the 303. the former combines analog-synths with repetitive peaktime-techno, while spaceinvasion interprets this through a sluggish, yet no less brutal, flow. lastly, lucindo scatters nuances of trance. rave!

byron s ballads is a dance treat on the housey-ish vibe showing ceephax s melodic skills in full flow. citylink is a smooth house/disco track ideal for cruising the ocean highways and downtown boulevards. sneaker is a poundy 303 classic with an emotional melody which is simultaneously uplifting and melancholy. haliphax is based on ceephax s earlier -friend track- but has a nice camelot chord arrangement and disco finale that takes it to medieval heights. the hague is a simple upbeat house track with wintery strings and distant pianos over a throbby bassline.

acid fourniture is a journey into the darker recesses of ceephax s acidic mind. simple 303 lines pulsate alongside sinister chords and detuned synths. berlin trip is a classic acid 4 to the floor track along the lines of flow coma by 808 state. alligatored is a tight 808/303 groove made for the dancefloor. the zone is a slower more introspective acid, conjuring up lost warehouses and derelict minds. alien beacon takes a more electro acid slant, inspired by sinister lights in the sky and paranoia.

portland label dark leader returns with three tracks plucked from deep within the underground. acid farm, a local portland duo, kicks things off on side a with -bala 303,- a retro acid piece that embodies the spirit of ritual dance. next, kaliningrad s muzikalist brings us -acid disco valley,- a track that builds and builds to a frenzied reawakening of your inner raver. then on the b side a remix by the one and only black merlin. his take on -bala 303- drags your newly awakened monster into the darkest reaches of the unknown. dark leader 002 is housed in a full color jacket featuring both artwork and design by eric adrian lee, and mastered by timothy stollenwerk.

next up on the docket for acid camp records is a record created by duo john tejada and justin maxwell. the pair came together to make acr iii with two things in mind: creating sounds that put a smile on their face while possessing as much character as possible. the opening track, -i ve got acid (on my brain)- is a mind-bending wavetable freakout, the likes of which tejada and maxwell have been striving to do for years. using a vintage ems vocoder to create an original vocal sample, this track is bright, playful, & vivacious. -the name rolls in- is layered in an acid playground of sounds. a rhythmic track with a potent 303 bass line, prominent percussion, and that infamous vocoder back at it to create a distinctly groovy track. -field notes-, is a composition of celestial arrangements that is completely beatless. carried through by tiers of sounds, filters, and noisier elements, this track lulls the listener into an alluring sonic dreamscape.

limited 2017 repress. amazing again! after some time of silence, involve is back with a new ep from the label boss regal. this is a really personal ep where all the tracks work around the tb 303, telling a life story.

alex cortex delivering the heat!! mr cortex is kicking hard with a direct and mental techno tracks! oscillon, a1, is a bleepy affair, direct and repetitive, but please, play it loud and watch. rheometric is in the same alley as oscillon but bringing the bleeps and glitches trip even more in your face. combined with the fat but quirky bassline, it does the peak time techno thing extremely well. b1 s title -shear wave- does the track justice. backed by a fat downtempo beat, the distorted 303-reminiscent synth line cuts through the mix in a way that s impossible to ignore. strain rate tensor rounds up the previous three cuts, also in a very dancefloor-friendly manner. bubbly main lead and anxiety-inducing pad sneaking in the background seem to be the main thing, until another synth hits you as a counterpoint and flips everything upside down. proper no-nonsens stuff!!
