sami baha is a turkish producer based in south east london. his music was introduced to the world via his 2016 ep “mavericks” (planet mu), recorded while he was moving from istanbul to london where he’s now been living the last 3 years. sami got into producing through being a rapper himself, working with local rappers in turkey and producing beats for them, before setting his sights outside the country.
while his first record was focused around a more familiar trap based hiphop sound, “free for all” expands its range into more unfamiliar territory and also brings his production into focus by featuring a number of mcs from all corners of the globe: uk drill squad 67’s dimzy, stockholm’s yung lean and chicago rapper and singer dj nate (aka flexxbabii) who’s previously recorded on planet mu as a footwork producer. the record also features the rowdy sing-song of egyptian mcs dawsha and abanob from cairo whom sami met while on tour in egypt.

sami baha is a young producer from istanbul, with his roots in the turkish hiphop scene, who has been stealthily pricking up ears with guest spots on rinse fm and nts since he moved to london last year. he started this ep ‘mavericks’ while he was in istanbul, saying “the music i produced became more chaotic as istanbul became a harsher place both politically and economically. i didn t really design it that way, but i feel like the sound got more aggressive over the years”. he describes his music as ‘instrumental trap‘, but instead of trap vocals there are complex arrangements, although he has started to work with vocalists while he’s been in the uk.

with yet more prestige productions in the can and waiting to be announced, the mighty upsetter remix series steps up a gear with this pumpin dumpin rub from kode 9. the hyperdub boss took the better part of six months to work and rework lee perry and adrian sherwoods original audio ingredients, repeatedly returning to the drawing board, and here at last are the fruits of those reverent labours. heavily reshaped from the prototype album cut apart from lee perry and samia farahs reverb soaked vocals which remain largely intact, kode 9s remix of yellow tongue strikes right at the heart of funky, emphasising what that word has meant for three plus decades while at the same time highlighting the better elements of the bass oriented genre which has recently co opted the name. insistent clicking beats and a subtly pulsating rhythm fuel the ride, yet its the looping mid tempo house groove that gives this track its dancefloor appeal as much as its fragmented syncopation and pneumatic low end spring. offbeat dub version on the flip nails selector essential status, as if that was ever in doubt, and with a limited pressing run confirmed this is one not to be missed.
