for the fourth installation on boogie box records, appleblim links up with the middle east crew to deliver one of two eps planned for 2018. first up. two original tracks by the bristolian artist, vurstep and dream wisdom. signature appleblim crossover sound, floating between bass, d&b, electronica and house influences, with early carl craig/psyche/bfc and 4 hero watching over. on the b side, vurstep gets a rework by shed and forest drive west. always on point, shed does what he does best. a grooving old school flavored bass and breakbeats remix. followed by forest drive west s stripped down, mind humping, feet tapping basement flavor.

more than ten years since he first emerged on skull disco, appleblim presents his debut album. the label he co-founded with shackleton was the first the world heard of his productions, but laurie osborne’s innate relationship with electronic music culture reaches back much further than those groundbreaking early days of dubstep. early days spent soaking up hardcore, jungle, techno and plenty more besides were fundamental foundations from which to spring into the then-unknown realms of sub-low half-step club music. at that time fwd>> and dmz were the church for this ritualistic sound, and appleblim was a regular fixture at both.

following swayzak’s gestures of a sycophant, the third release on beatnik boulevard sees the return of appleblim after he launched the label in style with the conch shell motives ep. this time the berlin-based producer is working alongside long-time collaborator and fellow bristol bassweight alumni komon – the duo have turned out eps for aus music and apple pips in the past, but this 12” represents the first new material from them since 2014. the heads-down, meditative lilt of appleblim & komon’s bristol past looms in the shadows on this ep, but it’s shot through with a steely, modernist dance floor bite and high-end sound design. know yourself pivots around crafty, 2-step kinked drums but there’s plenty of space afforded to atmospheric synth surges that plunge the track into a mood-altering headspace just to the left of the conventional dance floor

the dynamic duo of second storey and appleblim return to r&s for another slice of their off kilter dance floor alchemy second storey & appleblim bring their detroit machine rhythms and sleek electronic grooves back to r&s for the ‘gimme 6’ ep. since their initial forays in 2015 on the label in the form of a trio of eps and a compilation that introduced the world to their unique strain of cyborg funk, the duo have gone on to refine their sound to ever new creative heights. this new ep is the fruit of that hard work - opener, and title track ‘gimme 6’ sees their production grandiosity hit new highs - swooping pads soon give way to slurping twisted bass and mechanistic hi hats before a collapsing breakdown freakout twists the trad techno blueprint into exciting new shapes. ‘levying rooks’ injects a sense of frenetic levity - serrated bass and scudding percussion, while ‘aperture‘ is drenched in swooning pads and fizzing, flanged out hats underpinned by relentless mutant kicks. too often modern electronic club music is all too content to sit heavily within genre boundaries, and ‘rules - ss&a’s gleeful disregard for categorisation and innate sense of melody, harmony and rhythm make their offerings the perfect antidote to the jaded veteran techno fans as well as the gleeful new jacks

looking back to the beatnik era on the south coast of england.
before package holidays and the rush to benidorm, beatniks ruled the seafronts and b&b’s of the southern beach resorts. beat poets and musicians pedalled alternative viewpoints & delivered fresh melodies to these waterfronts of escapism.
marking another step forward in his sonic evolution, appleblim inaugurates beatnik boulevard with a record that channels his roots in brooding bassweight club music into startling modern compositions. from his groundbreaking work on skull disco to various mutations of house, techno and electro explored via solo and collaborative releases for r&s, aus music and tempa , this 12” finds the berlin-based producer wielding fresh approaches to synthesis in a daring framework that finds physicality in music away from obvious rhythmic tropes.

appleblim’s third 12&#8243,,, for tempa touches on the sonic territories explored on his first 12&#8243,,, (the experimental and amorphus ‘wandered’ from tempa101) while expanding on those ideas. the first track ‘minus degree’ is appleblim at his most experimental. a beatless affair of sparse soundscapes and atmospheres. full of tension, and crucially no release, you are swept away by the waves of synths and sub bass. next track ‘move them’ is more traditional appleblim - 4x4 and dub techno chords build a sense of momentum over the space of 7 minutes. a traditionally leaning techno tune with a uk twist, appleblim’s use of space and tension will keep any raver entranced. final track ‘twist it down’ rounds out the ep with a subtle roller. broken drum patterns and bright synths help in stripping away some of the darker undertones prevalent in the previous tracks.

also - appleblim and second storey return to r&s with the third installment in their ep trilogy. *raves* opens up proceedings with an irresistibly shuffling drumtrack, scything lead lines and off-kilter bass, while on the flip *blyford bass* aiming directly at the dancefloor, turns up the wobble, dizzying perc patterns and gnarled subs to twist up speaker cones.

kicking off a big year for apple pips with something tasty and different from komon & appleblim! having worked together on remixes for respected labels like ninja tune & aus, appleblim & komonazmuk (now going under the name komon for his house/bass productions) started jamming in the studio on some original material. messing with boundaries and having fun was the order of the day, and what we have here are two of the first results… ’gas jam’ is a bassline-led roller with a nod to both classic uk garage & the futuristic house & techno vibes of uk bass music. getting dropped on rinse fm on both the marcus nasty & hypercolour shows, & with eats everything & carl craig supporting it already you can hear why it appeals to open minded and diverse djs.. ’silencio’ shimmers and shines on a glooped-out balearic/kosmiche beat, an 80s soul soundsystem bassline funks on through and leads you into a woozy blissed out climax…slo-mo house/bass balearic bizniss… with more collabs with appleblim to follow this year, his new productions getting props from all angles, & releases lined up on hypercolour, komon’s year is shaping up nicely!

two adventurous artists in their own right, platter001 sees the first meeting of minds for appleblim and october, with two wildly different results. >ny fizzzzz< is a peak-time belter in the truest sense of the word, launching to life with a rigid 4/4 drum machine stomp. appleblims dub tendencies pepper octobers knack for the jack with spacious delays and reverbs before a muted piano hook gets filtered into the mix. melting away to let the chords shine through, the drop encapsulates the pinnacle of any late night jam, bright, bold and brassy, and irresistibly catchy. >fountains of paradise< trickles in on a bed of rippling fx, guided by haunting, melodic synth flourishes that only vintage gear can conjure up. the rhythm section ticks away faithfully as the distinctly psychedelic tones and drones shape the definitive 21st century dub track. blissful in its execution, >fountains…< will stand the test of time as a magically unique slice of delectable ambience.

a nice quick follow-up to a great first release on wedges new label isp. this time by his good friend gatekeeper. as the name suggests, >blip< on the a centres around an incessant beep motif, slowly treated and effectedover time as the tune develops ? sliding breaks, deep punchy bass, and then those gorgeous shimmering chords evolving throughout. on the b, gatekeeper tackles appleblims skull disco anthem >vansan< ? expounding the original themes of texture created by delay and reverb and incorporating them into a 140bpm technical jungle piece. 9/10 recommended dj thinking idj magazine.

immerse cuts a unique groove these days, releasing original, leftfield music, often dark and uplifting simultaneously. this new gatekeeper plate falls on the darker side of the fence, but thats no bad thing. hades is a moody skulker ? triangles, pads and trickling sound fx giving way to a thumping bass n drum workout, dotted with delayed beeps and cutup shouted warnings. flipside, the keepers original skull disco collab tomb gets a rework, the insistent midrange line slotted into a rock hard selection ofmilitant breaks, subterranean bass and dystopian mechanical noise. words by diccon idj magazine 116

appleblim first met ramadanman and deapoh (of barefiles.com) at fwd>>, dmz and various other dubstep nights when they were barely old enough to get into the clubs. blim picked up ramadanmans debut release on deapohs bare dubs imprint and started spreading it across dancefloors in a healthy pasting. a friendship was struck up. and when we first heard >humber< we were floored. the phasing synths, rolling riddim and deep subs summed up everything we love at apple pips. this boy is on fire at the moment with house, funky, drum n bass and dubstep all getting the ramadizzle touch. a studio session in dorset between blim and rammles resulted in the deep house and italo influenced track >sous le sable< out now on will sauls aus music imprint and >justify<, a 140 bpm jazzed-out techno steppa with an awsome detroit-style house rework from will saul and mike monday ?sublime
