known by genre aficionados as one of the greatest singers and most riveting stage presences in soul music, jackie shane has remained largely unknown outside toronto, where her career briefly flowered in the 1960s. beyond her unmistakable gift of the gab, shane is a pioneer of transgender rights, born in a male body but unabashedly living her entire life as a woman at a time when to do so seemed unthinkable. any other way is the first artist-approved collection of ms. shanes work, ollecting all six of her 45s and every highlight from the legendary 1967 live sessions at the sapphire tavern, including three mind blowing, previously- unreleased tracks. rob bowman’s 20.000 word essay is jackies first communication with the public in nearly half a century, telling for the first time ever jackie shanes story in her own words. this deluxe two album set is copiously illustrated with never-before seen pictures from a career and a life unlike any other.

lithuanian mainstay donatello first appeared on norman hs stripped label back in 2012, and hes since returned for repeat trips into warm, polished progressive house. now he appears alongside shane blackshaw for a rare outing on vinyl with the immersive groover catch 23. undulating chords and dubby fx processing make for an intoxicating blend on both the vocal and instrumental mixes of the lead track, while label regular kastis torrau gets busy on the flip with a more brooding version of the original, using a similarly delicate sound palette but turning it to noirish chord progressions for the darker dancefloor

american experimental musican shane english continues in a long tradition of outsider electronics as hes been humbly prolific in his output though the years involving himself in numerous recording projects.collaborating with jonah lange in their group corporate park as well as an ongoing collab with beau wanzer (seeing a release last year under the cp/bw name), english now commits his second full length solo offering to vinyl in the form of the general dimensions lp. sparse machine driven electronics dominate the recording providing a back drop for the occasional pulsating rhythm, metallic clank or floating obscured vocal. while it is a dark and sparse affair there is a quiet downtrodden beauty throughout giving the recording a sense of uncertain serenity in an almost shoegazey way. highly recommended for those into early electronics.

sounding quite like nothing you have heard before, the excelsiors come correct with their debut album, control this. the latest project from shane ‘sureshot’ hunt, known for his sharpshooters group, and for his highly-regarded soundbwoy reggae breaks series wherein he has liberally dropped science, sharing his in-depth knowledge of ska, rock-steady, reggae and dancehall for the instruction of the hip-hop massive, the excelsiors is the logical extension of shanes passion for classic jamaican music (and more) of the 60s through 80s.

having taken a break from releasing on the basic grooves imprint, shane linehan returns to his native label with a straight up house music two tracker. side a meditate on this takes inspiration from detroit styles. moving chords, slammin claps and a chopped up scat style vocal is what s on offer here. the b side -the unintentional dub is a stripped back eeh, dub true to the original bg style.

cork label basic grooves keep the focus on irish talent for their fifth release as label boss shane linehan welcomes his namesake bambrick into the fold for some well judged, atmospheric deepness. the process finds the waterford based producer veering through dark, heads down terrain though the dubby elements are complemented by a woozy melodic melancholy thanks to the gentle chords that spread out. linehan maintains the basic groove momentum on the flip with a remix that is more stripped back, lending those chords some glowing incandescence, whilst the percussion swells with sweet intensity as it progresses.

having established his own basic grooves imprint with a trio of sultry new jersey influenced house releases, shane linehan hands the fourth release over to up and coming french producer janeret. *hard deep* goes even, ahem, deeper that linehans efforts for the label, combining a slamming mid-tempo kick drum with crisp and cavernous dub piano chords and the subtlest of organ riffs, making a nice contrast to the more upbeat styles of linehan. on the flip, linehan delivers his own version of track which ups the tempo and offers a ravey, pitched take on the originals simple one chord piano line, complete with bristling hi-hats and warm pad breakdown.

hailing from ireland, shane linehan is committed to showcasing the finest that new jersey-styled house music has to offer. having impressed with his release for local talk, he returns to his own basic grooves imprint to get the good times rolling with aplomb. >ilinx< wears its heart on its sleeve with a crisp beat that makes all the right moves, while a slick organ chord line takes centre stage in an upbeat revelry written for the start of the weekend. >so now you know< on the flip is a more contemplative affair, although no less steeped in bumping house culture. the keys are played in a more downbeat refrain and the beats a little more restrained, but this is still very much a dancefloor burner

sometime around 1999 swayzak released a 50 copies only white label of tracks >easy< and >hof ter lo< as a taster of their 2000 album >himawari< sadly neither of these tracks made the album in the end, but are now remixed and re-edited by rennie foster and shane berry (dirty works, japan) the originals are brought back to life, and given a twist in a new direction. ten years on we plough through our archives and have a new feeling for these old tunes.

you know the story by now, a string of super singles, a number one in the nialler9 irish song poll of 2010 (which turned them into temporary jerks kidding) and a constant string of live dates around the country have made squarehead one of the better bands in ireland and now, we re finally at the debut album chapter. its been a long time coming. squarehead initially recorded their debut album back in september and december last year with shane cullen in k9 studios and save for a couple of extra tracks and re-recordings of old favourites mother nurture and fake blood, the band have patiently been sitting on it since. yeah nothing is a dozen tracks of no-nonsense slacker indie pop, a fuzzy collection of lo-fi rock n roll inspired by surf-pop, old school rock n roll and bright guitars.
