leaving meaning ist das fünfzehnte studioalbum von swans und das erste nach der bekanntgabe der auflösung der band in ihrer letzten formation. es folgt dem 2016er werk the glowing man und wurde von michael gira geschrieben und produziert, aber schafft dennoch den brückenschlag zu aktuellen und ehemaligen swans-musiker*innen, mitgliedern von angels of light sowie anna und maria von hausswolff, ben frost, the necks, baby dee, jennifer gira und anderen. das teilnehmende, musikalische kollektiv wurde sehr genau von gira ausgewählt, wollte er doch seine vision des neuen albums aus eben den individuellen kreativstärken der musikern schöpfen. gerade diese impulse formen leaving meaning zu einem der spannendsten alben in der diskografie von swans.

in the dust of idols is an album exploring mortality, existentialism & the dread one can feel in the face of an apparently meaningless world. the journey you embark on when trying to create meaning where there is perhaps none. these initial senses of dread can be brought about by the insignificance you feel in the face of greatness, where others have seemingly found meaning and purpose in the face of your own wavering path.

pal joey (aka joseph longo) came up in the heady days of new york street culture, amidst b-boying, boom boxes and an unusually entrepreneurial spirit of beat-making. beginning with crude “pause tapes”, he was soon making tracks with drum machines and sampled vocals, all painstakingly assembled with razors and reel-to-reel. working at vinylmania, where larry levan might be found shopping for records in his pajamas, helped joey’s entrance into the city’s nascent house music scene, and he was soon working with everyone from krs-one to sade to the orb, whose “little fluffy clouds” he tweaked for stateside tastes.
true to his city’s inclusive spirit, pal joey consistently blurs the lines between disco, house and hip-hop, dropping scraps of old soul and recent rap alike over his skipping drum patterns and head-nodding keyboard lines. joey’s records (under his principal moniker and also aliases like earth people and soho) have appeared on jive, epic, talkin loud, wave and coco machete. he also has run three labels of his own - loop d’ loop, cabaret and footstompin records.

hobor is part of many groups and formations himself, such as songs for pneumonia or cointel allstars and the event-series fiktion+masse. his solo project is mainly known for extended dj-sets on various ambient-floors in leipzig and his live-sets - which could be described as cautious investigations into micro-sounds - are mainly based on his work with modular synthesizers. his debut-album on ph17 is a minimalistic, conceptual work that focuses on sound as much as on the way electronic music usually plays. all tracks consist of almost independent layers of sound that behave like improvising musicians. they seem to play together but by focusing on one of them you soon realise they’re actually stoically sticking to there own rhythm and repetition and as the tracks play on these layers of sound start to form ever different constellations. no wonder hobor says he took inspiration from improvising bands like the necks. his album is as fascinating and hypnotizing as one of their live-jams. “constellations is released on 50 limited tapes.

norm talley tackles techno. yes, you heard that right… in spite of 3 tracks on the original transmissions that fell a little closer to what the heads would expect from a very reliable source, it was that first one that everyone begged for more of. we must agree that those 3 minutes were just a little of a tease, so here is the full 9-minute extended cut of “man on the moon” that all of you asked for, and what a trip it is! certainly funky broken-beat techno is a new look for norm, but it’s pretty obvious in all 9 of the minutes here that this is a man from detroit making the music he knows best. there’s a groove and a touch here that speaks of soul and experience… although you may find this one in the crates of some of the new school techno elite, it’s safe to say they couldn’t have made it the way norm talley did. even if you remember part one you may be surprised where he takes it, but we’re even more pleased to say that “earth 2 moon” beats it at its own game. this one made our necks snap and heads turn the very first time.

oooh super hot one from til! truth is light keeps charging along with what could be their most dynamic release yet. still obscure but rather less obtuse than previous outings! limited quantities again. the label shout a four track 12 inch beast that includes a huge gospel cover of sylvesters already smash underground disco hit >i need you<. if this doesnt turn people out, then you should throw these records at people in the club and aim for their necks!
