the shadows is the new album from leeds-based six-piece tomorrow we sail. building on their debut release for those who caught the sun in flight (gizeh, 2014) over the course of three years, this new work combines perfectly the soaring atmospherics, gorgeously intertwined vocal harmonies and dramatic shifts in tone and dynamics that have come to characterise tomorrow we sail’s sound. yet, there is a new sense of urgency here. very much an album of its time, the shadows draws upon the same sense of connection to both past and present that defined its precursor but features storytelling that’s even more defiant and deeply personal.

there has been an emerging uk synth scene for a few years now, with vinyl labels like cyberdance, flight recorder and red laser pushing the sound onto vinyl pretty much alone in the uk. defiant against the odds, their resilience is now coming to fruition as it finally seems the scene is exploding inspiring new generations of synth disco lovers to create labels or parties based on the european output of the scene. an artist that has been associated with all said labels and has been riding the wave even when it was a mere ripple is kid machine.

manmakemusics fifth release, a 10 inch vinyl-only ep, comes from u, the newest addition to the imprints expanding roster. unlike the labels first four outings that were aimed squarely at the dance floor, this record is a stranger and more pensive affair featuring 4 raw cuts of genre defiant electronica. opener >eah< borrows from 80s chicago house but strips out some of the more familiar tropes leaving just a guttural and infectious rhythm. >evil spirits< is a stuttering mournful piece while >haunted< flips a faintly recognisable sample over a shuffling 4x4 beat. the ep is rounded off with >heaven<, the most optimistic of the 4 tracks, and described by the artist as a warped homage to an idealised golden era of british dance music.
