ant orange’s third 12″, for karaoke kalk forms something resembling a trilogy for the label. “right there” is built on a familiar rhodes-n-bass aesthetic, combining the lo-fi jazz of 2017’s “arkupe” with the soulful vocal motifs of 2015’s “s/t”, while introducing more electronic ingredients and taking an increasingly exploratory approach to rhythm and composition. the opening title track clocks in at over 8 minutes, growing slowly from soft tickled keys to a full-bodied groove circled by airy synths and fragmented rnb vocals. “drunk in the trunk” then shifts down a gear, looping another vocal cut over a lazy, stripped-back wahwah vibe. side a closes with experimental jazz skit “let that sink in”, its jerky tempo and flashes of light reminiscent of a late-night subway ride. the b-side takes a more contemplative tone, with the meditative arpeggios and sparse drums of “comfort zone” leading into the dusky west coast stroll of “muscle beach”, before “rudis goes offline” picks up the tempo for a last shimmering dance. the closing track “a frozen lake” sounds just like it sounds – chilled by name and by nature.

following his 2015 release s/t, ant orange is back with another groove-laden 12inch on karaoke kalk. arkupe is a prime slice of laid-back beats and bass-heavy jazz breaks. each track oozes soulfulness, from the smooth-as-silk fender rhodes on the opening title track to the downbeat afro rhythms of fog walk, and the nonchalant guitar riffs and synth lines on little wing. side 1 closes with feld, a sun-drenched slo-mo house jam. side 2 presents another handful of diverse ant orange cuts, starting with the more uptempo toe-tapper big lils. lb offers more tasty jazz-n-bass drumming, while the closing track my man has a breezy still-awake-on-sunday swagger. with his latest 12inch on karaoke kalk, ant orange shows the wide range of styles he has to offer. arkupe is loaded with some of the mellowest vibes youre likely to hear all year.

following on from his releases on kolour recordings and profound, berlin resident ant orange’s latest 12“ on karaoke kalk is an innovative record packed full of diverse and lively tracks. the five tunes on the single take in an extremely wide range of styles, fusing elements of tribal drumming, funky soul, nu jazz and deep house. omi gets the ball rolling with groovy off beats and a wonky kalimba melody to get your feet tapping. yesterday is a funky dance-floor track while tunes like are you alon and the look are filled with romance and vibes under the careful guise of eclectic electronica. the track hands together brings the 12” to a close drawing inspiration from the same marlene shaw vocal sample that st germain used to such great effect on their hit rose rouge. ant orange brings a new twist to this iconic soul-jazz voice embedding it in a contemporary down-tempo groove. although originally from leeds uk, ant orange has such an mixed range of influences and styles present in his music that the result in a truly global sound. ant orange relocated to berlin some time ago where he now plays out at any opportunity, and with this new single he is again giving something back to his fellow vinyl junkies.

the mighty geena is back on antinote with a new ep filled with deepest psychedelic goodness and spaced surprises. comes housed in a glorious printed sleeve! tip! side a starts with -tone loc- a heavy geenafied future classic, complete with signature celestial pan pipes and a deeper than deep bassline, together building in intensity with muted distant vocals adding to the sweet heady confusion. the next track -minus jam- is on a similar path of ecstatic disorientation, with spinning delayed glass toms supervised by the darkest dictatorial bass line confirming geena is a master of light and dark. side 2 continues with -box of exotica- where we are sent to a dreamy post blade runner musical world of traditional and futuristic collision augmented with beautiful and equally dark japanese stick music vocals. the last track -green resident- also walks the cosmic path found throughout this gorgeous ep, softer at first than the others, but the silky darkness soon seeps in bringing cosmic order to geenaland.

rhythm plates re-emergence through their pressed for time label continues apace on this second release, a split 12 inch that pairs a new cut from matlocks finest with solo productions from ant plate as yse and yse saint laurent. hissy warehouse beats, simple chord vamps and rapturous oh-vocals characterise yses dryish yet muscular 99% invisible, whilst plates yse saint laurent contribution when you love me pairs some r&b vocal sampling with drawn out synths and wispy percussion placed on top of a grooving bassline similar to bernard badies 09 mojuba hit move to the beat. rhythm plates submission, i think i ve dreamed this before adds a warming calmness to the ep, allowing a spirited synth line to traverse its arrangement like a geisha float-walking through an japanese garden of snowy arpeggios and moss covered basslines.
