having firmly established himself as one of the most exciting djs and producers currently working in contemporary electronic music, baltra returns to of paradise with his “can’t explain it” ep, a kaleidoscopic and dazzling journey through the heart and soul of raw and hazy house music. “can’t explain it” comes packaged in a paper sleeve complete with special illustrated artwork and sticker.
following the success of joey negros produced with love album, four of the album cuts get the remix treatment from an all-star cast of producers each with their own particular flavor. kicking it off chicago legend ron trent takes the original funked out, arthur russell flavoured, distorting space time and turns it into a deep house groover complete with a strong walking bass alongside adding a soul & richness to the elements that only he knows how. crackazat step up next to take on lactican boogie crafting it into an uptempo piano driven, emotionally charged stomper sure to do some damage this summer. flip it over and lay-far delve into in search of the dream adding squelchy synth stabs and a deep bass to give a more hard hitting edge to the track whilst retaining that disco flavor with angela johnsons emotive vocals. closing out the ep fouk come full circle, bringing their hazy, jazz tinged style to distorting space time building the remix around those warm rhodes chords, shuffling rhythm and dynamic bassline. gold once again from the z records camp!
very often included among the 50 must-have albums of modern african music, the two albums “angola 72” (with the inevitable “mona ki ngi xica”) and “angola 74” (with the first ever recorded version of “sodade”) are finally re-edited in vinyl lps, with their original sleeves as published in 1972 and in 1974, in the netherlands, on the label morabeza records.
brilliant 70s material by antonio carlos jobim – one of his key sets from the middle part of the decade that had the composer really deepening his approach to both singing and songwriting – moving past some of the more instrumental modes that he was using at the start of the decade! there’s a richness to the songs that goes way past simple bossa styles – and the lyrical brilliance shows that jobim hardly ever needed a poet or co-writer to help him hit the heights – as he really wins us over with his words as much as his music. claus ogerman produced, and gives things the right balance between fullness and space in the charts – which allows both a great focus on antonio’s vocal style – expressive, but very down to earth – and a few nice solos on fender rhodes too! titles include -saudade do brasil-, -correnteza-, -boto-, -ligia-, -valse-, -arquitetura de morar-, and -o homem-.
the new joey negro album produced with love is now available across all formats but as the double cd contained 20 tracks it wasnt possible to fit everything onto the 3lp version so the space time ep is a new vinyl ep containing some of these tracks that weren t ready in time to make it on to the vinyl lp. first up is distorting space time, a drawn out dubby, jazzy, spacey track that suggests a heavy arthur russell influence, one that is already a firm favourite of gilles peterson, louie vega and françois kevorkian i recognise is a jazzy boogie track with kaidi taitum on keys full of spacey effects and features sacha williamson on vocals. dancing into the stars features london s best disco party starters horse meat disco on co-production duties and angela johnson on vocals. this is the unreleased extended mix that comes in at over 10 minutes and is a full on dan hartman style modern disco production. completing the package is the black loops remix of wont let go who takes linda clifford s vocals and a killer bassline into deep house territory.
danny scrilla returns to cosmic bridge records with a full-length project inspired by a desire to experiment outside of club conventions. while cosmic bridge has become known for forward-thinking, dubwise dancefloor mutations, label founder om unit has long been a fan of ambient and synthesizer music and ancient musical box offers a current take on the format, with 16 tracks of lush electronic compositions and meditations. fittingly, ancient musical box also marks the label s first cassette release.
ancient musical box was written over the past year as a direct reaction to danny s frustration with club music and the inevitable cynicism that can sometimes arise from prolonged contact with scenes, styles, and genres. i wanted to create something without any ulterior motives, he explains. as the tracks accumulated, the project took on a personal dimension and therapeutic qualities. intent on not over-thinking or polishing his ideas, danny created something that is less album and more a collection of emotions in their rawest form.
despite not being intended for the dancefloor, the music on ancient musical box still bears clear relations to danny s catalogue in its minimalist approach and use of melodic motifs. you can hear it in the hazy crescendo of night sweats , the wobbly funk of pangalactic gargleblaster , and the gentle keys of talisman . alongside these are more experimental moments, seemingly fragile in their simplicity but hiding a depth that reveals itself in context: the delicate loops of the title track, the vibrations of cryopod , the melancholy progressions of too little too late .
ancient musical box is the sound of a producer remembering that the best ideas are the simplest, in the process pointing to new directions.
dibia$e has cemented himself as a producer on the forefront of todays burgeoning beat scene. a product of watts, ca, dibiase found his style in his mothers garage banging out beats while playing video games to avoid the strife of the street life - and he continues to grow with each and every release. originally released on cd/digital in 2011, sound palace has remained an absentee in dibis vinyl catalog, until now. throughout the instrumental record, dibiase shows his incredible ability at crafting spaced out 8 bit nintendo beats merged with a dilla-esque smoothness and a south central twist into a sound wholly his own. from bakers dozen to looney goons to schematiks, dibiases vinyl releases have garnered a reputation for selling out with a quickness. strictly limited to 500 units and housed in a silk screened 2 color chipboard jacket, sound palace enables new fans and enthusiasts alike to add a sure shot to their collection.
