unterton kicks off 2018 sideways with three tracks of high-octane electronics by mark. 0-160 bpm in 15 minutes. previous eps for a colourful storm had a conceptual focus: the destructive effects of tech start-ups on berlin’s cultural landscape. sound-wise, they paired frenetic, experimental d‘n’b with musique concrète. on his unterton debut, mark continues further down a path of dark and psychedelic beat science. at times tranquil and hypnotic, other times charging forward between cracked whips and whiplash left-turns. “comedy is the dog that walks out of the room when you call its name.”

unterton introduces an artist who’s already renowned for his work within informed circles but yet to be discovered by most: berlin-based new yorker phase fatale debuts on unterton after strong releases with respected labels jealous god and aufnahme + wiedergabe and six well-received club appearances at berghain.

after recent records by kobosil, &#8721,,, (summe), etapp kyle and nitam, unterton continues its path of presenting young faces with a new ep by somewhen. with his null ep the berlin-born and grown producer expands his musical repertoire, connecting to the tonal range of his live and dj sets in and out of berghain.

25 jahre alt, geboren, aufgewachsen und beheimatet in berlin, aber zuhause im club. nitams debüt retold ep (u-ton 06) setzte 2015 bereits den ton – und hier sind wir nun also, drei katalognummern und 14 monate später mit seiner zweiten 12- auf unterton. dieses release verfolgt eine ähnliche linie wie schon sein erstling: neue, variierte sonische motive mit einem frischen gesamtklang. trotz seines noch jungen alters zeichnet nitam erneut sein interesse an dance music der späten achtziger und frühen neunziger nach, präsentiert sich geschult an klassischem detroit house und chicago acid house, ohne sich aber selbst auf eine bestimmte klangpallette zu limitieren oder gewisse musikalische erwartungen zu bedienen.

with u-ton 06 we welcome berlin born and based nitam as a new artist on unterton. his first release as a producer is a collection of tracks that were all created during various recording sessions in the last year – the retold ep immediately gives a clear impression of nitam s versatile production style.

kobosil offers up the fifth release on ostgut tons sister label unterton. after his self released debut ep >-------< a signature sound becomes apparent on the equally obscure titled >- -----< second ep, a style that places himsomewhere between noise, techno and the verve for sobriety

on the fourth unterton release the black dog present a new sound somewhere between house and techno that the black dog call darkhaus. the original version of * council flat emptiness* is an infectious, futuristic, disco-tinged version of a progressive dancefloor workout bathed in strings, mellow melancholia and heavy bass. this is preceeded by a straight to the point stripped down version that multiplies the hypnotic elements of the original. on the b-side a 9-minute-30-something remix from luke slaters l.b.dub corp project drives the original into classic slater territory where techno and groove marry and electrify each other.

the third u-ton release enters the merry world of post-disco and proto-house, mirror ball fantasies, baby powder dreams and rays of sunshine. manhooker are guiddo (music) and mavin (vocals) who were brought to the attention of ostgut ton by nd_baumecker. wheels in motion and club anonymous both got the club remix treatment by rotciv (the rimshooters, mister mistery) who delivers clever and respectful dance floor adaptations without destroying their peppy pop appeal.

gerd janson (head of running back) and phillip lauer (dj, producer and 50% arto mwambe) step out of remix mode and release their first 12 inch of original tracks as tuff city kids. the ep is released as a hand stamped yellow label in a green generic paper sleeve and is the second release on ostgut tons new sublabel unterton.

ostgut ton launches a sublabel that will feature remixes of tracks that have been released on the motherlabel ostgut ton, unterton will also release other ostgut ton related or befriended artists and one-off projects. the releases are presented as stamped white labels with track details only. tobias. makes the start of the remix series with two of the tracks from his >leaning over backwards< album, the a-side sees efdemin remixing the title track >leaning over backwards< and on the b-side ricardo villalobos and max loderbauer give >girts< the remix treatment.

phase fatale creates techno from disparate subcultures of dead industrial with a post-punk spirit, bringing back an immediacy and aggressive energy sorely missing in the contemporary electronic landscape.
with “redeemer,” the debut full length from phase fatale, conceived by dj and producer hayden payne in new york by way of berlin, deepens his exploration of the tension—both sonic and conceptual—begun on his eps released over the last three years on the jealous god and unterton labels. in intent and impact, phase fatale bears allegiance to the surreal influence of juan mendez aka silent servant, with whom payne has worked closely in collaboration.

it goes without saying that space has always been central to techno – both in terms of its cosmic and futuristic trajectory, as well as in the spatial dimensions of sonic elements. etapp kyle’s first full ostgut ton ep release sees the ukrainian-born, berlin- based berghain resident emphasizing the connection between the two, while avoiding techno’s overt intergalactic clichés. by partially linking to his continuum ep (unterton, 2016), the results are four tracks of pristine, sci-fi minimalism, propelled by ambient synths and percussive explosions in distant skies – more utopian than dystopian. opener “alpha” establishes the cosmic theme from the get go, with chord swells and a whirring, phasing spacewind panning across the stereo image. while a subdued kickdrum gets things started, it’s the rhythmic interplay between dynamic high-hats and halled-out rimshots that guide the track through space. from there, “quantum” on a2 strips the voyage down to a glowing, unwavering arpeggiated synth line, interspersed with twisted, high-pitched bells and updated 909- esque snare patters.

matrixman (spectral sound / dekmantel / ultramajic) delivers a submerged reimagining that world-premiered on xlr8r. severino (of horse meat disco) and hifi sean deliver a galloping up yours remix, and rotciv (unterton / luv shack) adds funky basslines to his outta sight version. the limited edition of 330 copies is hand stamped and hand numbered, and a large, heart-shaped hard ton sticker is included with every copy.

following on from the release of innershades no stopping ep on creme organization last summer, the dutch label revisits the a side cut nina with two remixers in tow. those remixers are bristols bass pioneer kowton and the inimitable production duo of tuff city kids. unterton and delsin duo gerd janson & phillip lauer aka tuff city kids turn in a bulky, piano laced and acid riddled remix of nina that is a pure party starter. idle hands and hessle audio man kowton reworks nina into something run through with plenty of sirens, raw, crunchy drum loops and rolling percussive lines. its stormy and tumultuous and is full of frosty textures. these are two abrasive tracks designed for maximum impact on the dancefloor.

running back boss gerd janson and fellow german phillip lauer are tuff city kids and are the next pairing to contribute to delsins house leaning series. their only previous ep came on ostgut sub label unterton and the tracks they offer up here continue in a similarly raw and analogue house vein.

with release nr. 11, luv shack records are once again eager to exalt the diversity of their releases, while keeping up the quality. luv011 is the split ep of the two up and coming electronic music duos manhooker and space echo. whilst both projects are still relatively new to the scene, they have equally made a stir with their first releases. manhooker consists of the two berliners by choice tomasz guido switala and sebastian mavin magassouba. their first release appeared on ostgut ton s sublabel unterton and their second ep was recently released on german heavy hitters sonar kollektiv - a collab with ex new yorker snax, featuring a remix by justus köhnke.
