coldgeists music on unknown bodies is an intimate reinterpretation of coldwave, techno and dark ambient codes, uttered with strength, guts, and an underlying romantic soul. inspired by nocturnal runs of bosozoku bikers clans, who stem from this japanese subculture of the late seventies , coldgeist has created a series of soundscapes and songs that evoke speeding through foggy nights and fluorescent lights. haunting repetitions and stiffness of the rhythms as a metaphor of mechanical gestures, of bodies turned into units of consumption, stranded from the life and passion they crave. the frustration of a youth that only finds relief in extreme experiences, danger, and the sexual tension of speed and crashes. with analog and digital instruments, field recordings but also his own voice and songs, coldgeist has bred a truly unique record.

clocking in at 11 minutes, this is a radical deconstruction of the track bint el khandaq that appears on the mashrou leila album ibn el leil. lost souls of saturn tease out the underlying emotion and yearning present in the original and take the listener on a beguiling, symphonic ambient journey that calls to mind wolfgang voigts much loved gas project, or the shimmering imaginary landscapes of brian eno. renowned for their rousing, sensual electro-pop mashrou leilas songs touch on political freedom, lgbt rights, race, religion and modern arabic identity. lost souls of saturn were approached by the band to reinterpret the original track and the stunning results fit perfectly as their debut release on r&s. this is the next step in the evolution of seth troxler and phil moffas lost souls of saturn project. look out for an album on r&s in 2018.

the industrial project of oliver ho and tommy gillard at its most subversive and evocative, with two preoccupations threaded throughout: middle-eastern percussion, most vivid in the chimes of casting and the driving doumbek rhythms of burning and the sands and the structural iteration of chaos, underlying a collage of wild left-turns, scornful of repetitive hooks and other musical routines. early birds bag a 7inch by hos desert burials, evoking classic punk/funk hybrids like cabaret voltaire.

dj haus ever-expanding deviant house music empire continues to impress with another installment of house crime, this time committed by szch. the 12inch kicks off with the fast and freaky girl i neva which borders on juke levels of nagging sample chops, before the script gets crumpled up and tossed at the bin with the wonderfully scruffy rave deconstruction of peugeot 106 at sunrise (pingers mix). unconditional (edit) brings something a little smoother to the mix, although that underlying weirdness that comes with house crime releases is still lurking in the wings. ukljucen ti je blutut finishes the ep off in a rowdy yet reflective style long may the strange tale of house crime continue.

dmt 013 is philippe petit s first and only techno attack for 2017. the record starts with lose yourself (part i) , an atmospheric track with a groovy rhythmic pattern that builds into a menacing acid trip. it continues with one life , using some very clear dubby pads, snare and toms, its underlying baseline bringing a happy feeling to the e.p. lose yourself (part ii) is aggressive and hypnotic at the same time, its intricate structure leading the listener to a state of trance. the record ends with distant memories , a prime time techno cut with several layers of synths to cover all sound frequencies to devastating effect.

after establishing his unique voice on our somewhere01 compilation, kiani & his legion is back on something happening somewhere to expand his vision. he has gathered his own sonic palette to transform the underlying consciousness. being alone with the self, it may seem ones own mind is the only one certain to exist. not sure if youre the one whos watching from the ground or hanging upside down, the peaks secretly form a unity beyond their separateness.

strength lies in calmness – and vice versa. marcel fengler returns on imf and offers three new inspirited musical pieces that protrude from the club context just as well as cater for your home stereo, picking up on the diverse musical moods defined by his debut album fokus (ostgut ton, 2013) while concentrating on intertwining sound aesthetics. with “kyu” laid out on the a-side, this new 12- starts off with a delicate yet muscular floor-pleaser – its subtle 4/4 rhythm is counteracted by lush claps on 2/4, but the true finesse comes in form of its varying rhythmic details, crisp hi-hats and underlying, subtle melodies, most notably the twirling organ trills, sustained synth pads and alienated shout outs. “shitau” on b1 picks up on these introverted and adoring musical moods with more organic bell percussion and swelling synth layers adding a more cinematic touch to the complex rhythm patterns—then pausing for a short dreamy break, gaining speed again before culminating in a grand finale. “zen” follows up with intimate string arrangements until fengler varies the tone and tempo with tribalist percussion and a lush kick drum. this ep is an ideal companion, whether you re pruning your bonsai or branching out a club set.

torrential results from the orderly geometric spatial arrangement of sounds and pulses within the internal structure of these new tracks. the rhythmic structure is based on regular internal tonal or sonic arrangements that are often expressed in the sub-geometric frame of club tracks. even when the audible grains are too small to hear, or are irregularly spaced, the underlying sonic structure is always effective - and can be determined by meticulous diffraction.

the new luca bacchetti ep, genesis, comes out on endless right on the cusp between the old and new year. once again luca divests himself of all preconceived ideas, taking the project into 4 separate directions, 4 different soundscapes, but maintaining as underlying common denominators the attention to detail that has always distinguished his productions and his unmistakable groove, the poetic dimension and narrative ability always manages to reach its peak in the breaks.

grow label returns with its ninth offering, an ep of four choice original works, each a very deep and specific imagination alive with detail. the artist creator this time is plantae who offers his first vinyl ep and it is altogether a refreshingly original experience. plantaes tracks are characterised by momentous baselines underlying layer upon layer of organic texture and intricate primal percussion, which come together for a sound quite otherworldly. descriptive in nature and so filled with peculiarity *tigshameran* is an album and experience hard to grasp, but this is one of its charms, and its originality will keep you coming back, time and again discovering new moments of intrigue. a very respectable debut record from plantae!

new york s gunnar haslam appears on l.i.e.s. with his third lp for the label titled lebesgue measures. picking up where he left off on his last long player mirrors and copulation we hear an evolution in his sound throughout the nine songs. still there are the understated yet grooving acid lines next to carefully programmed drums and attention to surrounding detail which creates beautiful and balanced atmospheres. there is a brightness coupled with an underlying sullenness tapping into some sort of mystical and seemingly obscured narrative which moves through the entire record. deep and immersive stuff to say the least.

over a year since their last release, birdsmakingmachine come back hitting hard with a diverse three-track ep ranging from deep to minimal house. the title track “deaf crows” intelligently layers delayed snares and elaborate hihats into subtle analogue pads and melodies, resulting in a sophisticated, yet dj-friendly composition. at over 10min long, it’s an endless rotation of industrial rawness that manages to melt into the smooth and rich textures for which the birds are known. “black midget”, on the flip, goes into darker depths, with an almost broken 4/4 beat underlying overly swinging rhythmic arrangements and hypnotic synth lines that reminisce some of the earlier bmm material. finishing off the record is the simply titled “primos”, offering a more minimalistic approach with its intricate arrangement of quirky arpeggiating melodies and playfully juggling hihats, closing off the ep in the neatest birdsmakingmachine fashion.

bas armos sound is deep, profound and delicately crafted with the serious groove always residing in the underlying pulsating bass.

roberto capuano releases his first single on truesoul with two exceptional tracks that show a techier side to roberto s sound and one that impresses throughout. the title track never stop has been a highlight in adam beyers sets and its easy to understand why. the creeping vocal and driving drums are an inaugural part of the track before the uniquely pleasing pads drop in and create a gripping and immersive track to get lost in. around is a techier track that implements a throbbing underlying bass line that sits and keeps the track driving under a roaring vocal.

adult only shape is back with an intriguing collaboration, between the mysterious frenchie monsieur georget and young parisian talent le loup. a combination of the old skool with the new skool, the sounds are just that. each take a pounding bass and a solid minimal-tech stance and layer their character on top. a1 is scattered with futuristic bleeps and computerised murmurs, interspersed with reminiscing vocals, while a2 is the most raw in nature, with a tough techno feel until the smooth overtones set in and a feeling of euphoria takes over. but some may say b1 is say arguably the standout track, for its intoxicating vocal and irresistible underlying swing and groove.
