from a fascinating yet relatively undiscovered era of experimental music in peru s capital city lima, this never before released split single features two of the foremost musical minds of modern day tropical, electronic and ambient roots music. one song each was plucked from the archives of mutual friends los palteados (tomas tello) & la sonora roza (efraín rozas / la mecanica popular), offering a rare glimpse into the musicians respective productions and group projects at the onset of the 21st century. the pair of selected recordings each have their own hypnotic sensibility, yet both remain blissfully approachable experimentations in the beloved styles of cumbia & descarga.

an in-depth look at the 1970s catalogue of the uruguayan label macondo and the roots of subtropical music: bomba, cumbia, guaracha, merengue, porro, plena featuring 21 tracks by essential names such as sonora borinquen, conjunto casino, combo camagüey, sonora cienfuegos, grupo maracaibo, grupo antillano. set up in the port area of montevideo, macondo discos was founded by the chilean entrepreneur luis onel and named after the town from garcía márquez’s fictional universe. in its early days the label produced a catalogue comprising folk, tango, murga and rock. 1975 onwards, after the release of the lps tropical caliente by cienfuegos and exclusivo! by borinquen, marks the golden age of tropical music in our country according to carlos goberna, founder of sonora borinquen. macondo became a veritable tropical music factory in uruguay, amassing together with guacamayo (a sublabel dedicated to new artists) nearly 200 records in its ten years of existence.

alessandro diga, a young talented dutch artist, delivers 3 solid techno tracks for the fifth release on the bergwacht record label. “phaedra” starts with a great bassline and goes into a warm melodic techno track with a lot of emotions, dreamy synths and it goes along with a clear hihat. the track is able to be dreamy and not cheesy at the same time. “sonora” is grounded on a rolling bassline and clear hi-hats as well, it goes over in nice effects with outstanding breaks, but it finds back to the starting rhythms. “dahlia” the hidden b-2 track transmits a deep journey with melancholic feelings.

soundway continue their journey into colombia with this limited edition 45 featuring two bolts of colombian dancefloor thunder. both songs were originally released on the legendary discos tropical label and are re-issued here for the first time out of south america.!side a features a version of the party standard ‘tequila’ by orquesta tropicana. blaring horns, hand claps and shouts for tequila combine for a latin dancefloor classic. side b is a version of the legendary fania salsa track ‘lluvia con nieve’ that was originally released in 1964 on the new york label. sonora tropical re-recorded the track for discos tropical and has remained unavailable outside of colombia until now.
