the story of smuggler brothers starts in palermo, the principal town of sicily, in late 2011. founded by three friends, musicians active in the fertile underground music scene of the city, the band aims to experiment new artistic directions, combining a diverse set of influences ranging from italian soundtracks and library music from the 60s and 70s to african-american music, with groove as the core essence of the band. from the initial nucleus, the band evolved soon into a 8-pieces combo

“yuxtaposición” is a recently unearthed treasure recorded by a tight italian trio in miami during the early seventies. until now, this music has only been heard in office backgrounds, tv commercials and movie soundtracks. but the perseverance of an admirer brought about its first-ever release on the italian schema label. imagine hearing a 1972-era cal tjader quartet without cal tjader and you get an idea of what to expect. it’s slightly latin, lightly funky and truly enjoyable. “yuxtaposición” offers enough to interest a jazz listener. but the sounds heard in these 35 minutes are really better appreciated as mood music. lead man, cabildo, composer of all ten tunes here, has a knack for writing jazzy little hooks that launch his tasty, well-crafted keyboard solos. often alternating fender rhodes and piano within the same song, his playing maintains a hypnotic command that recalls bob james’ cti style. electric bassist bobby fares and percussionist max ronnie make subtle, supportive contributions that serve only to enhance cabildo’s sound. there’s a funny thing about yuxtaposición too. it’s kind of like developing an addiction. you may not pay much attention to it at first. but before you know it, you’re hooked. you need to hear it to be satisfied. a very nice surprise.

eight years after moon in libra (sccd/lp 407), the new s-tone inc.s onda consolidates the partnership between stefano tirone and his longtime friend and collaborator tomaz di cunto aka toco, who co-wrote 8 of the 10 album tracks. a strongly heartfelt black rio-inspired effort, ranging from groovy brazilian soul-funk to mellow soulful chill moments, featuring historical (laura fedele, manuela ravaglioli) and new (barro, qinho, the 4maré quartet) contributes on vocals, for a very personal and original result.

inspiriert von der musik von fela kuti und seinem africa 70 projekt mit tony allen am schlagzeug, ist -the devil made me do it- reiner downtempo afro beat in seiner ursprünglichen version. der erste remix namens -invisible cosmic echoes- hat ein langsameres tempo und zeichnet sich - wie der titel schon sagt - durch nachhall und raumklang aus, während die -the invisible astral wave version- durch sein beschleunigtes tempo mit schwerpunkt auf dem perkussiven stammes-element perfekt für einen dj-mix geeignet ist.

als “vorbildliche musikalische begleitung zu einem vollen tanzsaal” konzipiert, reinterpretiert “blue latin” ein musikalischen genres - jazz. schon vor jahrzehnten galt jazz als die tanzmusik par excellence und gerardo frisina liefert, modernisiert, von afro-kubanischen, brasilianischen und latin-jazz-elementen kontaminiert, vor allem tanzbar gemacht. das fast meditative “incanto” vereint spirituelle jazz-einflüsse und afrikanische atmosphäre.

“produzione”, das ursprünglich 1973 auf piero umilianis lp “problemi d oggi” veröffentlicht wurde, ist eine erstaunliche mischung aus akustischer percussion und elektronischen experimenten, die von einigen musikkennern als erstes beispiel für techno/trance angesehen wurden. dieses lied, zusammen mit “attività”, einem weiteren auszug aus “problemi d oggi”, wurde von gerardo frisina überarbeitet-, der den ursprünglichen inhalt geschickt durch die mischung mit modernen elektronischen empfindungen erweitert. das ergebnis, verpackt in einer grafik, die von der ursprünglichen veröffentlichung von 1973 inspiriert wurde, sind zwei tracks, in denen die avantgarde der 70er jahre und die heutige musik mit überraschender leichtigkeit verschmelzen.

lelio luttazzi was a multifaceted artist, a jazz lover (whose favourite pianist was erroll garner) who left his mark as a pianist, musician, conductor and composer. during a career spanning more than 50 years, he established himself as a master of several disciplines such as music, literature and cinema. “i miei stati d’animo” (my feelings) is one of his greatest records, where you’ll find all his irony and wittiness, his versatility and priceless talent. a beautiful easy listening jazz work, completely instrumental and way ahead of the time it was released (1971).

“dramatest” is a collection of experimental library music published in 1974 by fonovideo and signed by oscar rocchi (and his moniker chiarosi) - an excellent pianist and composer, who worked with many italian jazz heavyweights - and fabio fabor. “dramatest” consists of 14 slightly eccentric explorations of the electronic spectrum, casting pure experimentalism, melody and no fillers whatsoever. one of the best examples of the lost art of italian libraries!

it is kind of difficult to imagine tv or radio shows accompanied by tracks like “neutroni”, “mr. mysterious”, “fucina diabolica” or “idillio cosmico”, but in 1973 - the year this gem was released - italian tv was often surprising the audience with innovative shows, likely to host music such as fabor’s compositions. listening again to these 14 short compositions is still an extraordinary experience if we consider their impact and influence on contemporary music and on hip labels of our days like ghost box. along with “pape satan”, this is probably the best fabio fabor ever.

a fantastic obscure record, whose tracks simply anticipate techno and generally electronic music of the early 70s, including kraftwerk’s milestone “autobahn”. the set provides some blending funk tunes driven by experimental electronic music, all with a heavy dramatic feel: the result is an unbelievable, unique and explosive library music lp, a collection of several tv synchronization themes. what we had is stunning drama cop scores and dark electronic moods, all surrounded by loads of fuzzy vibes and all that weird, industrial, futuristic synth fx and so on...

“this is the moment” wurde ursprünglich als b-seite von “lord please hear my prayer” veröffentlicht, eine seltene 45 auf cipiti records. geschrieben von tony benn feghaly und sante palumbo, ist es ein erstaunlicher gospel-soul song, interpretiert von edith peters. in nur zweieinhalb minuten begleitet das sante palumbo orchester peters’ entzückende stimme zu einer groovigen und intensiven interpretation. die ursprüngliche version von 1973 befindet sich auf der b-seite, während gerardo frisinas nachbearbeitung die a-seite dieser neuauflage schmückt.

fonits b 85, part of the legendary serie usignolo, which bears the signatures of the mysterious coscia (perhaps a moniker of accordionist gianni?) and formini, is another cult library music release: an orchestral pop record whose tracks are curiously recommended to accompany viewings of vast parks, footage of agriculture, ads, moving crowds and congested traffic jams, american working-class districts with hilarious titles such as dayda, schizzo, palmas, murlak (which casts an incredible fuzz guitar), bronx and ciresa facaud. in two words: a must!
