the fourth installment in john osborns dred records series will be from fellow uk producer harsh puri who goes under the moniker reformed society. dred 004 consists of six tracks in total three that will appear on the vinyl release, followed by another three that will be digital-only exclusives. harsh puri aka reformed society debuted in 2015 with this being his sixth consecutive release in order. harshs productions caught johns eye, or rather ear, after being sent to him last year and resulted in this release of six solid prime time deep house stompers. packaged in an understated matte white sleeve with a black and white picture of brahma (the four headed hindu god of creation) handstamped on each cover by the label owner himself, this being a continuation of the human skull dred logo. one life opens the dimensions ep and is the track given to label boss john osborn for deconstructing and remoulding into his own specific vision each release will contain a rework from osborn. if you are familiar with johns previous work you will immediately recognize his characteristic resonating percussion, the tune being a deep house sci-fi storm expedition driven by a full luscious kick covering the tracks of chords from unsettled pads. the eps title track has ambient sonic rays flowing through it, being aptly named dimensions it is also the records warmest adventure, distorted percussion juggles sparse subaqueous melodic moments, and from here we go into the 12inches final moment, chasing titanoid. reformed society goes in with full yet silent force on this one. a warped bassline co-creates the groove with a particularly bouncy beat with sharp strings piercing though.

reformed society is back! -food for thought- and -sunflower startfish- are two pure deep house tracks, -zero gravity- is the bumping house affair. about massimiliano pagliara remix, there is no need descriptions.

british producer reformed society is on a steadfast mission to dig deeper by going against the grain, standing up to the status quo and daring to do something different. a self proclaimed goal that is easily noticeable in his first release for “made of concrete”, wherein he reveals three original tracks and a remix by gathaspar, one of the label’s regulars. kicking things off with “high tension”, a high strung stripped back piece with an aerial feel, the artist builds up the entire mood of the ep from scratch. a clear-cut, steady groove whose versatility makes it relevant as an intro, outro or interlude. gathaspar’s rausch remix is a sub-bassy reinterpretation of the initial piece, filled with contorted whirs and whizzes that give the track a sub- aquatic feel. on “volgende halte”, the opening vocal sample shifts from a seemingly conventional soundbite to a recurringly haunting snippet that remains etched into the listener’s brain. rhythmical rolling pads galvanize the groove, making for an eerie yet relaxed overall vibe. movement inducing from the get go, final offering “orbiting jupiter” centers around wavering bass leads, while playing on a blend of spacious synths and timbered percussion patterns.

embracing disco, techno and house music in all its declinations, what ever not introduces now british artist reformed society, project started by house producer harsh puri as a consequence of djing and collecting records since 1998, debuting with a four track old school house ep, optimistic chaos coherently fitting with the italian imprint philosophy. ‘hope’ has that solar, yet dusty groove folding distorted rhythmics and joyful pads around an insistent lead dubby pattern and shimmering synths. ‘optimistic chaos’ is again smooth but lightly gloomy, until a pause intoxicates one’s body and mind filling them with inebriating ambients. ‘incognito’ delivers a deep driving atmosphere here, featuring dogged, crisp drums together with minimalist, yet momentary cosmic motives. for the closing cut ‘detracid’, the artist cooks up a brew of acid lines with the usual charming synths and vivid hats, building a light sense of tension fired up by the warm, heady sound scapes. each track is similar to the last, stiffening the musical timbre of the label, confirming the producer’s strong artistic identity as a consequence.

detroit s new >soundshift< imprint makes a stunning debut with this intoxicating two-tracker. opening up is the soultek remix of billy dalessandro s smashing >don t sleep< release (which was found in the many sets of dan bell, ame, annie mac & pete tong last month) this mix is nothing short of brilliant and will certainly capture the hearts and sets of all those mathew jonson or loco dice fans out there. it has a subtlety that really creeps up on you and before you know it you re tapping your feet and zoning out listening to the intricacies of the music. truly minimal, there are loads of space within the track which is somewhat similar to the original but still a world apart, particularly in the fantastically eerie synth programming. in the forefront of the song is the shimmering and haunting vocal loop, >don t sleep< which has an almost hypnotic effect. (think richie hawtin in closer) the melody of the title is a delicate affair which sips cocktails in the company of some nicely chosen whirring and echoing noises. the build is effected so subtly it verges on melancholy but halfway through a rumbling bassline, appregiated melody and backbeat hi-hat pattern announce a funkier escalation!!

great return of the classic and pioneer band of the french funk scene! after a long absence, malka family reformed, burned some scenes and composed a new album without changing anything to its magic formula. recomposed with almost all original musicians, they come back today with a new album, le retour du kif. at the heart of a still popular and multicultural marais area in paris, young musicians gather to jam. this is where malka family is formed. their first self-produced album, malka on the beach, was released in 1991, and gigs were immediately chaining up all over france and europe, famous for their eccentric costumed performance and after-parties. in 1992, warner france signs them for a second album tous des oufs, a real p-funk space opera with guests such as sidney, dee nasty, marco prince (fff), or juan rozoff. they will then traveled france, switzerland, italy, holland, denmark, namibia, japan ... and in 1994, the band becomes independent again and records an ep for big cheese records, titled fricassee de funk. after a final tour for the third album, fotoukonkass (bmg) recorded with renaud létang the band finally broke up. at a time when daft punk is using funk artists to support their performance, when bruno mars & mark ronsons uptown funk continues to make the crowds dance, it s time for the original funkateers families to come back and teach a lesson to new generations. after the band reformed and started touring again since 2015, they quickly decided to record a new album and to leave on the roads again

‘pat thomas introduces marijata’ is a seminal ghanian album that fuses highlife, reggae, folk, funk and soul, from legendary vocalist pat thomas. originally released in 1976 on gapophone records. ‘marijata’ was a group made up of three members – kofi ‘electric’ addison on drums, bob fischlan on organ and nat osmanu on guitar, hailing from ghana. pat thomas career began in 1969 with the ‘broadway dance band’, leaving a year later to join the ‘uhuru dance band’. he then played with ebo taylor’s ‘blue monks’ and finally formed the ‘sweet beans’ in 1973 where he really made his name. the group released ‘false lover’ in 1974, split and then reformed as marijata, releasing ‘marijata’ (also available on mr bongo) and this album, ‘pat thomas introduces marijata’. thomas career spans more than 50 years and he still tours regularly across the world. replica original artwork, official mr bongo reissue. licensed from gapophone records courtesy of george prah.

ike yard recombine their music looking across decades of post punk, electronic, soundtracks and come out with some of their best yet and enough to last the next 20-30 years (in ike yard s very own words). originally founded in 1979 new york city, members michael diekmann (keyboard, guitar, vocals), kenneth compton (programming drums, synths arrangements, bass, guitar, vocals) and stuart argabright (programming drums, synths arrangements, distortion bass, keyboards, metal perc) reformed the band once in 2007 and again in 2010. each time different and with new ambitions. this time ‘sacred machine’ ep is defined by detailed drum layers supported by multiple basses and keyboards, some off-timing beat patterns that turn in a second of synchrony into a straight four on the floor kick and first time vocal collaborations.

drummer and music producer desmond mahoney is another of the unsung heroes of british reggae. born in jamaica, he moved to the uk in 1967 and began his professional career playing drums in a band called young ones from zion. he was a founding member of black slate when the group formed in 1974, played with them through their glory years and after running a sound system in north london for many years, returned to the fold when the group reformed a few years ago. his first foray in music production probably came during a brief period in toronto in 1978, working with a band called the ishan lions, but he was back in the uk in time for black slate’s breakthrough material, which brought them onto ensign in the uk, barclay in france and alligator in the usa. at the same time, he continued to arrange and produce for a number of british reggae artists operating in both the roots and lover’s rock modes, female duo nya & natty’s ‘one love stylee’ seemed to bridge the two styles quite successfully on this greatly sought-after 12-inch, first issued in 1981 on the s&g label, then based at a record shop in bow.

one of the most important harmony groups in the entirety of jamaican music, the paragons have a long and complicated history. first formed in the ska years by bob andy and tyrone evans as the duo of andy and ronnie, the group soon expanded to a quartet through the addition of howard barrett and john holt, the latter naturally assuming lead duties, following the subsequent departure of andy, holt, evans and barrett made the paragons the quintessential rock steady trio. they had an incredible run of hits for duke reid and coxsone during the mid-to-late ‘60s, and also issued some self-produced work, before holt’s solo career skyrocketed, leaving the group on the back-burner. then, in the mid-1970s, the paragons reformed, cutting material for new york-based labels such as clocktower and clintones, which led to this intriguing album, which saw material recorded in jamaica at harry j for bunny lee mixed with work cut at bullwackie’s studio in the bronx, along with re-workings of classics such as ‘left with a broken heart’ and ‘memories by the score’ is a whole range of new material, dealing with contemporary themes.

the remixed tracks from ascetic’s second album ‘everything is becoming’ are a collision between industrial techno, ebm influenced bass lines, doom and dark ambient. four berlin based artists: ancient methods, phase fatale, unhuman & luna violenta offer their take on the two opening tracks ‘utterings’ and ‘exegesis’ from the album. roared vocals, guitar both jagged, creepy and ambient, live drums and samples are all melted down and reformed into at times recognizable and at times wholly alien compositions, ancient methods, phase fatale and unhuman offer different approaches to techno punishment while luna’s interpretation is a cacophonous build that explodes into sonic abstraction. this ep is a perfect example of what berlin does so well, where genres that share aesthetic values feedback, overlap and inspire.

overdue re-issue of the longplayer from 1982 of this great uk reggae band. lp-vinyl has the original album track order and also for the first time on cd with seven additional tracks including john peel session tracks. the capital letters have reformed in 2013 and perform live again.

gravetemple was formed in 2006 as a side-project of the band sunn o))) by oren ambarchi, stephen o malley and attila csihar. the group formed initially to tour in israel summer 06, creating several recordings which eventually became the holy down album, which was released on southern lord recordings in 2007. at the time of the israel tour, the lebanon war started and was in action. in summer 08 the trio reformed together with the addition of australian drummer matt skitz sanders for a short european tour culminating at a headlining performance at supersonic festival in birmingham. in late 2009 the original trio reconvened for a special one-off concert at londons institute of contemporary arts. april 2013 marks the first set of live action since that period, and a new chapter in the ongoing system of the related network.
ambient/ruin was created with the 2008 quartet, elements of tape collage, concrete, field recordings blend within a strong geographically diverse (parts were recorded in japan, australia, paris and israel) suite of heavy minimalist/maximalist music, black/death metal and drone. the culmination of these efforts become the music, literally, of sadistik exekution meeting phill niblock.

3rd saste box set! gathering sounds from the experimental frontiers and outer edges of electronic music, stellate 3 collects together, kangding ray, nsi, xhin and reformed factions visions. the polished tracks are layered to the -nth degree, filled with minute details and whispered asides. these productions use an array of analogue machines and the most cunning digital means to vividly render disquieting questions.

after something of a hiatus, manchesters claro intelecto is back to release his third full-length album, reform club, on delsin records in april 2012 !

james ruskin is considered a veteran producer these days, after co-founding blueprint records in 1996 with richard polson, and releasing a string of classics on blueprint, meta and tresor labels to name but a few. 2009 saw ruskin re-invent his sound, a far deeper bass driven aesthetic, with killer releases on sandwell district, token and the newly reformed blueprint imprint.

enemy returns from the summer hiatus with a huge remix package courtesy of tony rohr & par grindvik! tony takes the hypnotic groove and brings it up to the surface, reformed as a bouncey club rocker similar to his output on clink! par grindvik wastes no time as his remix immediately plunges into the depths of the abyss, offering up an equally weird and rewarding listening experience. we would describe it, but it s kind of impossible!

is there more to life than house music? for the swedish dj/producer mikael nordgren: probably not. since 2004, he has been steadily churning out some of the best future house tunes from his studio located in stockholm. his productions have been released under many aliases including dmalicious, 12th floor and for get physical under the mighty moniker of tiger stripes. the blacker the music, the sweater the sound. a potential anecdote that fittingly could have inspired mikael when he composed the warm and supple portion of detroit fueled funk that is, blackroom entertainment. yet another presentation of his programming prowess and ability to mold and mend melodies into a sophisticated groove. especially utilizing his signature catchy drums to get the vibe going, then introducing a melodic synth stab before the track takes you away with complex variations of rhythmic lead sounds. abacus may remind listeners of his stellar mad at me ep released last fall on get physical - albeit reformed with a more analog approach. springing tones get the groove rolling before it is taken over by a cabal of sci-fi sounds, at which point a thick, modulated analog bass sound ups the overall energy. the lack of audio imagery is little if none, as the sounds invoke so many moods, feelings and sensations that only a seasoned dj and knowledgeable producer could fabricate such a convincing theme. blackroom entertainment ep again showcases mikaels ability as a formidable contributor to house music

two more cuts on our summery piano riddim featuring the vocal talents of roll deep mc riko and our very own rubi dan. warrior queens voicing, things change, was released by soul jazz records and also featured on our compilation an england story. riko - a reformed character after spending time in jail earlier this decade - addresses himself to wayward youths with a warning about the badman lifestyle, while rubi dan rails against violence and corruption in london and the uk.

tony blunt presents the first ep in the black series on dpress industries, a limited series of three ep in which the barcelonian artist puts together the very best of his repertoire. tony blends a perfect combination of melodic techno and detroit style, in which the basslines, pads and chords are the catalysts in an explosive mixture of rhythm and sound. the series starts with this ep of 4 cuts featuring the talents of the very special guest soultek (echospace, souldubsounds, usa) who provides two completely new and extraordinary versions of the track city rain, along the lines of his previous productions as echospace. this is an amazing job of liquid and deep techno with an emotive feeling influenced by the dub techno masters like deepchord, basic channel, maurizio…cv313 mix is a very deep dub-techno masterpiece rethought and reshaped in echospace, detroit while soultek mix reshaped & reformed by steven hitchell in chicago is a funky minimal techno tool. watch out for the upcoming releases and remixes by pantha du prince (dial) and brian aneurysm (iron box music).
