keine ahnung was a quartet from w÷rth am rhein, germany formed in 1980. the original line up was rolf schmuck, franz h. rodenkirchen, elke fuchs and olaf schumacher. hermann kopp from stuttgart, a friend of the band, contributed a composition on their first lp and became a full member in 1985. taking cues from conrad schnitzler, tuxedomoon and dome, the band members shared a common interest in industrial, pop, avant garde literature and cinema. their controversial name translates to dont know or havent got a clue in german. the quartet would record three lps in 6 years, two of which remain unreleased.

quantum collage is the latest pseudonym of olaf gutbrod aka ohm-g. having built a reputation around his long list of chill out tracks produced while resident in ibiza, this release on martin gretschmann (acid pauli, console) and nico stojan’s ouïe sees him dive into some more electronic textures. ‘lucid dreaming’ is a chugging, groovy trip built around a shuffling beat and dubbed out percussion and horns, tapping into gutbrod’s talent for amplifying the vibe. ‘afrika im weltraum’ adds a little more tempo - a swirling, driving drum loop provides the basis for layers of extra percussion and spacey synths and various chants and radio broadcasts. her beauty certainly draws on some the mastery gutbrod showed in his releases on café del mar and hotel costes cds - a chilled out groover with the sunset / sunrise seemingly in mind.

after all efforts were put into jacob korns debut album during summer 2012 uncanny valley strikes back with namesake jacob stoy and his very first solo ep after his s51 for the uv010-compilation. everything starts with redensart, a sunny piece of music with a sneaky bassline and easy synth pads that come across like a warm rain shower: its house in the end but feels like so much more. hauswart is an impressive example of how one can create a whole atmosphere of sound within two minutes. its short but feels so comfortable that you really like it to go on and on forever. start is maybe the most conventional deep house track on the ep and seduces with catchy synth chords and thrilling drums. finally gegenwart brings things to a jazzy end with tipsy synths and tripping percussions. the artwork comes from none other than jacobs father olaf stoy, who is a painter, lyricist and porcelain designer still working in jacobs hometown rabenau near dresden.

skinnerboxes first bpitch 12 inch >anapol< is the culmination of about seven years of performing experience. iftah gabbai and olaf hilgenfeld casually juggle colourful house, jazz and funk elements like its their second nature. and the metamorphosis from anarchistic improv chaos to form and structure in no way impinges on the level of energy in their music - in fact, just the opposite is the case, as the newly discovered sense of auditory space in the tracks allows them to significantly concentrate each tracks power.

the particular view on a musical future might have been considerably different when olaf hilgenfeld (berlin) met iftah gabbai (jerusalem) for first sessions in 2004. the piano player hilgenfeld used the accordion that time mainly, whilst gabbai was using all instruments available, a computer was among those more by chance. only one year later the duo skinnerbox played regularly on such uplifting, innovative off-partys that came up in the new techno generation again.
that was just the beginning. skinnerbox have developed a purely electronically composed and performed music (partly featuring vocals by elle_p) – that is not based on loops but improvised techno inspired house and minimal house. the roles in the duo are clearly settled: olaf hilgenfeld – moog synthesizer, iftah gabbai – hardware drum machines, max/msp und ableton live.
all these distinct impacts and effects can be heard on their various releases from the last two years, but far better in their live sets. skinnerbox are an experience, taking you on expedition with paralyzing minimal, breaking house, hard-edged techno-jazz, and ambient electronica futurism.
it was a desire to eternalize this play- & colorful diversity, often just caused by the moment, as entire homogeneity. thus, they needed to leave temporarily their environmental techno and minimal house scapes. >king of spades and marmalades< – the result – is a jazz opus wrapped into a disco suitcase. it is a reminiscence as well as going far ahead of daily musical habits, shown not at least by the order of tracks, do not starting with a stunning hit of the album, but with 20 minutes of challenge.
