nach 30 jahren veröffentlicht nonplace nochmals die a seite der viel gesuchten maxi single -elephant s easy moonwalk through the night- von manos tsangaris zusammen mit einer neuen b seite, die eigens dafür 2017 entstand. manos tsangaris ist ein reisender, ein radikaler. deshalb auch sind seine tracks wie fahrten, flüge oder fluchten. sie schillern, sie treiben voran, sie fliegen davon, indem sie in ihren grundelemten beharren. Ähnlich ist es bei tsangaris’ experimentellen musiktheaterwerken und -installationen (mit denen er international bekannt geworden ist). sie muten an wie skizzen, die erst auf den zweiten und dritten blick hin ihre perfektion eröffnen. in jedem medium und künstlerischer sprache erreicht tsangaris zuletzt die Überschreitung ihrer mittel. „alle wirkung ist Übergang.“ (novalis)

jaki liebezeit, der masterdrummer, hatte seine freude an der tatsache, dass der trommelbau seit menschengedenken sich nicht wesentlich verändert hat. ob ein fell jetzt mit schnüren oder mit schrauben auf dem kessel gespannt wird, ob es ein natur- oder plastikfell ist - das prinzip bleibt dasselbe: beide umschließen einen hohlraum, ohne den es keinen klang gäbe (man stelle sich eine trommel vor, die innen drin mit lehm gefüllt wäre.) so ähnlich ist auch die rhythmus-auffassung. das Überflüssige fällt weg. dir leere mitte erscheint. das unsichtbare ist das entscheidende. alle stücke auf der zweiten ep von drums off chaos kreisen um diese leere mitte. im zentrum ist - nichts. hier geht es um abstrakte, groovende trommel-musik. die rhythmen sind so weit auf ihren elementaren kern reduziert, dass sie zwar eindeutig singulär, aber auch allgemeingütig verstanden werden können. es kommt etwas zum vorschein, das allgemeinen gesetzen wie gravitation, ergonomik und akustik folgt. „spiel, was die trommel will,“ war einer von jakis sätzen. das hat drums off chaos sich mit ihm zusammen zu herzen genommen. im zentrum stehen rhythmen, die auf einfachen zahlenverhälnissen gründen, um ihren reichtum aus sich selbst heraus zu entfalten.

mortazavi und friedman verbindet die erfahrung auf dem terrain ungerader, zyklischer rhythmen, die die grundlage ihrer, einerseits zarten, andererseits ekstatischen trance-kunstmusik bilden. im studio entstehen in der wiederholung und improvisation -nummern-. das sind groove-basierte stücke, gespielt auf verschiedensten trommeln (mortazavi spielt überwiegend tombak) und elektronischen mitteln. die musikalische basis bilden natürliche, d.h. gegebene bewegungsformeln. sie sorgen für die harmonische spannung zwischen elektro-sound und live erzeugtem groove mit präzisem timing. durch extreme klangbandbreite der tombak und mortazavis extravaganter technik, gelingt die verschmelzung mit friedmans ort- und zeitlosem repertoire.

das bandprojekt drums off chaos war eines der zentralen und kontinuierlichen projekte des erst kürzlich verstorbenen schlagzeugers jaki liebezeit (der zuerst meist mit der kölner band can assoziiert wird). anfang der 1980er jahre hatte er eine zunächst lose zusammenkunft von trommlern initiiert, die sich anhand einfacher, sehr verbindlicher vereinbarungen ein rhythmisches konzept schufen, das die möglichkeit zu weit ausgreifenden improvisationen gab. mit den jahren verkleinerte die gruppe die anzahl ihrer mitglieder und verfeinerte ihr zusammenspiel, welches durch repetetive modelle und deren variation gekennzeichnet ist. -monoton musst du spielen-, hatte einmal ein zuhörer schon in den 1960er jahren zu liebezeit gesagt. das nahm er sich zu herzen und konnte diesen vorsatz in kaum einer formation so regelmäßig und inspiriert zu leben erwecken wie mit drums off chaos. in über dreißig jahren entwicklung dieser außergewöhnlichen band, die sich eigentlich nie als eine solche verstanden hat, sind zwar zahlreiche aufnahmen, aber kaum je veröffentlichungen entstanden. in den letzten monaten seines lebens hat jaki liebezeit jedoch mit seinen kollegen reiner linke, maf retter und manos tsangaris einige stücke ausgesucht, die bald auf vinyl und auf cd - in je unterschiedlichen sammlungen - erscheinen sollten. nun, nach dem ableben liebezeits, soll es erst recht auch dazu kommen. - mitglieder: jaki liebezeit, maf retter, reiner linke und manos tsangaris

special backstock .. in musik und text verschmelzen über alle titel hindurch stimmungen, eindrücke der sub-sahara konzert-tour von b.friedmann 2013 und fetzen von erinnerungen an eine imaginierte zukunft. sie reagieren auf reale -kpafuca- - -things falling apart- - zustände afrikanischer metropolen und kollabieren zu grooves und phrasen, die an chris marker s science-fiction-apokalyptik ( -la jette-/ -sans soleil- ) erinnern. in dieser polyphonie der un-orte schwingt auch der geist reisender klangabenteurer, zb. der musikethnologischen praktiker hartmut geerken und roman bunka (embryo), deren visionen und musik-wirken sich gegen reduktionistische, essentialistische inszenierungen sträubt. gegen jene kulturellen landkarten, die in die musik immer wieder zwanghaft hineingezeichnet werden, setzt friedman auf -cease to matter- im intuitiven modus die befreiende kraft des rauschens, der Über-mensch-maschinen-musik, der krummen beats und des technischen zufalls-defekts, kurz: das -un-gehör-sam- (johannes ismaiel-wendt) gegenüber der normativen deutungshoheit musikalischer weltkarten. die stimme des aus texas stammenden in berlin lebenden performers und vokalisten daniel dodd-ellis wirkte bereits 2007 auf burnt friedman s album -first night forever- (non22). die lyrics stammen von beiden autoren und wurden von friedmann während der produktionsvorgänge 2013 bis 2014 mehrfach zerlegt und neu zusammengesetzt. die zeile -sky is blue inside of you- ist dem 1932 erschienenen roman -brave new world- von aldous huxley entnommen. tracks 04 und 09 (-cease to matter-) enthalten ein piano sample edit basierend auf einer komposition von georges invanovich gurdjieff (1872-1949).

20 jahre nach dem flanger debüt auf ninja tune erweitern atom™ und burnt friedman ihre vorstellung von technoidem, zeitgemäßen jazz auf drei neuen nonplace titeln. die spinner ep (non42) bringt den womöglich brutalsten flanger-track spinner, der auf dem 2015 erschienenen album -lollopy dripper (non41, titel -spin) basiert. das 12 minuten lange, transmutierende loose joints in abwegigem rhythmus-modus (15) und der 4/4 club-track it from bit sind dagegen zwei 2016er originale mit swingender körperspannung und unruhig flickerndem glühen. dezent verpixelt versteht sich.

with its non-placed devices and hard-to-pin-down aesthetic falling between electronic and psychedelic music and the warm-hued sounds of traditional acoustic instruments, burnt friedmans zokuhen,produced exclusively for vinyl, may be considered an extension of bokoboko. on this new double ep, too, the music focuses on uneven rhythms that dictate the groove for all the participating musical elements and display a formal logic to which all the instruments gladly succumb. with its even rhythm and proximity to dub reggae, the track kon ki (c2) shows that exceptions from the rule are permitted among the six new tracks and two re-worked bokoboko themes that round off this follow-up.

this compilation spanning a period of 37 years features burnt friedmanÕs releases and edits thereof from vinyl-only labels (latency (fr), marionette (ca), dekmantel (nl) amongst others) plus 4 hitherto unreleased tracks, making them available on digital formats. friedmanÕs music from 1980 to 2017 covers a broad spectrum of played and programmed rhythmic styles that traverse not only club music from techno, electro and dub, but, above all, trace friedmanÕs own artistic development. a trajectory that owes a lot to his long-standing collaboration with can drummer jaki liebezeit, who died at the age of 79 in 2017. like liebezeit, friedman already explored even and uneven rhythms back in the late 1980s. this selection of 17 tracks documents this pursuit while bringing rough or discarded tracks to light, which did not fit onto any album or were intended for the nonplace label. the compilation runs the entire gamut of his work on percussion, keyboard, samplers and toys of all kinds using various production methods (tape, atari, midi, sampler, hard disk recording, digital audio tape). studio work (instant-composition, programming and recording) underwent major technological changes and revolutions in the 1980s and 1990s, but friedmanÕs distinctive signature style prevails throughout. surprisingly danceable tracks, interrupted by alien atmospheric periods, defy any genre.

the second ep of samuel rohrer’s range of regularity album presents two more striking reinterprations. these new remixes provide an intriguing parallax view of the original tracks, using the percussive eclecticism of the parent lp as a starting point from which to journey into sonically vibrant, feature-rich territories. the production specialists on hand for this project include burnt friedman and ricardo villalobos. villalobos, has already formed a strong working relationship with rohrer’s ambiq trio, lends his talents to both of the eps. (ror remixes i - amel-ep716). nonplace label boss friedman, as well, has carved out a unique space for himself within the electronic world, logging several decades’ worth of releases that with dub-wise production sensibility, skewed humor, and riots of tone color. though each individual remix has its own character, they are all united in their ability to provide a quick cure for fatigue with the common “loop”: though not improvised, they are strung together from fleeting phrases that evolve as if they are taking on a life independent of their creators. burnt friedman’s own dramatic interpretation of “microcosmoism” pairs up his consciousness of deep bass and analog inventiveness with rohrer’s continually transforming sound objects, making for a flowing and wordless narrative that simply dares listeners to stop paying attention. feeling more like a collaboration in “real time” than a remix proper, friedman brings his characteristic ‘mad scientist’ wit to the proceedings and delivers an energetic piece that simply glows in the dark. this is complemented nicely by villalobos’ remix of “microcosmoism”. it carries the energy level of the 1st ep over to a new disk, while heavily experimenting with feelings of emotional ambiguity. at some points aggressive and at other points merely curious, this mischievous collage of attitudes feels as inspired by the questing jazz of sun ra as it is by continental techno. contemplative keyboard runs, enthusiastic spring-like percussion and malfunctioning machine chatter all coalesce to make this a most fascinating piece of multi-purpose electronic music.

on ep5, legendary german musician burnt friedman makes his dekmantel records debut with ‘monsun’. the berlin based artist, who built a reputation for himself through his explorations into obscure, finely-tuned, experimental dub through his label nonplace, alongside his collaborative relationship with the late can drummer jaki liebezeit, is one of the crucial, sonic manipulators of our time. ‘monsun’ finds friedman crafting flowing, percussive, dub techno that is both esoteric, and progressive. befitting of a dekmantel release. alongside friedman sits legendary detroit act ectomorph, aka. bmg & erika, also making their dekmantel inauguration, with a record that surmises’ the group’s anologue, style of motor city beats

following on from march s shlømo remix package featuring donato dozzy, bambounou, shlømo and label boss kennedy smith, bright sound s second release of 2016 will new a brand new ep from sweden s andreas tilliander. with his releases on his own repeatle imprint and his tm404 alias s hardware-driven techno featuring on skudge white and kontra-musik, tilliander is among sweden s most versatile talents working right now. his arrival on bright sounds is of a piece with bsrx 004, last year s reissue of fellow swede henrik johansson s 1997 ep as smyglyssna. as with johansson s record, tilliander s stettin libau ep explores slower tempo techno, locating the moments of space and energy in between its rhythmic structures. this search is most keenly observed in knapp ledsyn , with its ever-shifting sonic landscape melting away at various points to reveal its unusual, skeletal beats and hidden melodic details, while the ep title track and nybliven lots apply that approach to what might at first be a traditional dub techno template, yet still offering further small moments of off-beat character. completing the release is a detox operation remix of knapp ledsyn from nonplace records chief burnt friedman, in which the german veteran strips things down to a gentle patter of drums overlaid with suggestive flashes of the original s rich atmospheric elements.
