2019 repress - echoes of this summer’s ‘shango’ still shimmer through systems as detroit’s waajeed continues to make good on his promise: to “put paint where it ain’t.” after years of soul, funk and hip-hop explorations as a founding member of the platinum pied pipers (among many other innovative escapades) and, most recently, a soulful remix of amp fiddler on kenny dixon’s mahogany music, waajeed is building on the fresh line of house grooves he commenced this summer. his first pedigree dancefloor tracks in almost 20 years, he taps directly into the source and builds with his own soulful bricks. it’s working, too, dj-wise he’s playing alongside moodyman, mr. scruff and carl craig this fall, while ‘shango’ has enjoyed heavyweight support by the black madonna, carl craig, jackmaster, gilles peterson and many notable selectors.

wie es scheint sind alle begeistert von santa cruz track mais uma chance, einem der herausragenden songs auf der letzten too slow to disco brasil edition. der berliner jack tennis hat für uns seine magischen hände an den track gelegt und eine dj-freundliche yacht-disco version abgeliefert, die santa cruz selbst so begeistert hat, dass er uns persönlich darum bat diesen remix zu veröffentlichen. jack tennis ist ein berliner produzent, der kopf vielerlei projekte ist. er veröffentlicht seine eigene musik unter dem namen hotlane (gomma records) und liefert stetig disco-edits für das einflussreiche uk disco label midnight riot (von yam who!). um die veröffentlichung abzurunden, konnten wir die italienische rework/edit legende les inferno überzeugen uns seinen unveröffentlichten track brazilewis einen chill-out slo mo groover zur verfügung zu stellen. die nummer findet sich schon seit einiger zeit in jedem dj supermarkt set! les inferno veröffentlicht auf samosa records, eines der hippsten neuen edit/rework labels, das eigentlich strictly vinyl ist. seine tracks wurden z.b. schon von niemand geringerem als moodyman in seinen sets eingesetzt. eine streng limitierte 10inch mit den beiden tracks wird es erst ende august geben.

ursprünglich aus malaga in spanien stammend, ist carlo das neueste mitglied der suol familie und er bringt mit seiner tres ep ein paar dringend benötigte sommervibes in seine jetzige heimat berlin. bei carlos musik, die bereits bei größen wie moodyman und session victim anklang gefunden hat, dreht sich alles um dieses besondere gefühl, an einem sonnigen tag zu house zu tanzen – genau wie bei suols wöchentlichen hallo montag partys, bei denen über mehrere monate mit gefühlt endlosen dj sets unter freiem himmel unsere liebesgeschichte mit carlo begann. her mit dem sommer!

following cottams critically acclaimed i cant carry on ep, which marked the inaugural release on fatcat records new electronic sub label fcr, the highly-rated dj/producers new 12inch drops also via fcr. locked in the groove is a groovy, boogie chugger, which powerfully ebbs and flows over nearly 11 captivating minutes, and sample heavy dub is all dark n heady eastern atmospherics, whilst dreaming of another place is a fathoms deep, epic journey into mystical and majestic dub-house. an avid participant in preston s early rave scene, paul cottam inevitably pursued djing, progressing to warm up slots for his techno heroes surgeon and regis. tentative steps into production using ableton were met with such encouragement that cottams debut releases began to appear. a set of four untitled, un-marketed and unpromoted vinyl self-releases created a huge organic stir with record collectors, attentive journalists and djs including moodyman, gerd janson and soul clap. this buzz was helped in part by speculation on his identity, but was primarily due to his simple yet effective, flavour-filled and groovesome tracks that blurred the boundaries between re-edits, reworks and originals, moving between slow-mo chug and more straight-up house, whilst encompassing elements of disco, hip hop, nu soul and afrobeat.

very classic sounding deep house from brian harden. the crown jewel of his album get gets the re-rub from label honcho mike grant. haunting sounds from the past that feel like old frankie knunke sets, this is bringing back the deep sound that is re-establishing detroit again as a major force in house music. mike’s throw down’s are really smoked out, blending soulful strings and chunky beats that meet with pure emotion from the blinding rhodes solos. very moodyman/ ron trent.

funkadelic have created an enduring legacy, and the power of their impact is visceral in detroit. their records not only played with genre, but possessed a diabolical sense of humour that led to music domination by the late 70s with parliament, funkadelic, parlet, bootsy’s rubber band and the brides of funkenstein all releasing albums the same year for two years in a row. the music itself is beyond stereotype, but equally huge is that they were a black band not allowing themselves to be limited by anyone else’s notions of who they could be, having a massive impact on the next generation of detroit music, detroit techno. but more than just techno, it is a freedom of thinking that extends beyond boxes, so we included all sorts of today s generation of detroit musicians and producers to show the wide range of music that was funkadelic and how these ideas are still contemporary, they endure and inspire.

some more uncut diamonds by s4aw... robert nedelcu aka lecsicu from rural romania is only 26 but already a skillful and dedicated producer of oldschool-flavoured house music with a tek-edge. on top we ve got vocals by berinika van wyk a singer born in south africa. robert was inspired by guys like rick wade, mr. g, kerri chandler, and of course moodyman. his trademark are strong percussions, little harmonies every now and then and a “tracky” atmo to his tunes that sound very chicago-ish. all three original tunes are pure, vintage-style house music a little on the tech side. so this clearly is an ep for the dancefloor and for early morning sessions when the sun s coming up again... “route to 95” received a groundbreaking rework by detroit house music veteran gari romalis. with incredibly deep subbass sequencies he makes this tune a deep jam like you never heard one befor

surely not is a brilliant house number with moodyman indebted drum pattern based around a soul edged vocal sample which unfolds into a deep late night groover. this is an essential release for detroit aficionados. on the flipside earl goes in with british knights a frenetic subloaded tribal number with a lot of swagger and the odd nod to classic todd edwards and afrika bambaataa along the way. this one is all about the stabbing repetition and the infectious bass line that builds and builds euphorically until it drops into a rhythm track that commands the hips to move and the fist to punch the sky.

john talabot is a youngster from barcelona with a rather special way of approaching music. borrowing his schools name for his alias and the most diverse samples for his music, he produces expansive and iconoclastic housey tracks. his influences range from flamenco to northern soul, from african music to traditional asian songs and he s inspiration sources go from the profound and sensual house of moodyman and labels such as sound signature or kdj to disco music, chicago house, pop or techno, whatever he likes. sounds like a bass kick and a sampler, he says us in his myspace, no less. this young producer and tireless musical tracker has the ability not just to find the appropriate samples but also to conjugate them wisely. in a great exercise of sonic inventiveness, guitars, strings and keyboards are combined in his tracks with rhythms and vocals with african reminiscences, to give us his own vision of house music, original and personal, but yet very effective. cliche allergic, songs like naomi, korlee or afrika sound cosmic and tremendously emotional without losing sight of the dance floor (thats what we call fat beats). his tracks are organic, human, full of life, the kind of music that keeps not only your foot moving but also your heart tingling.
