discobar re-launches in search of other galaxies with its second outing from toulouse-based duo zendid. they take us on three voyages through the electro-infused house grooves they made their name with, while still finding time to bring in mayaan nidaam for a remix. space has us seeing stars right from the start, with an alien menagerie conversing over a strict-form beat. the bassline on virgin virgin is big enough to give you butterflies, tempered by stellar synths and wordless vocal clips. berlin 6 takes the bass for a lighter walk and finally, mayaan nidam remixes space into a nebulous and reflective place, pads breaking through the thick atmosphere mid-track for a moment of zero gravity meditation.

he making of this record inadvertently began in cuba in january 2008. powershovelaudio was recording in la havana some of the best contemporary cuban singers and musicians. the resulting recordings were of an inspiring beauty. the situation was that powershovelaudio had this outstanding collection of voices, woods and brass, all infused by the tropical warmth. it was first-class material that should be put in the best hands possible, then maayan came to mind. ônight longö is a synthetic work. maayan has inexplicably, quickly and with incredible precision captured the essence and the expressivity of the cuban musicians and taken it to a hitherto unknown place. maayan is of course well-known for her diligent talent in inserting voices of quality in her mixes, but in this occasion the result is more than surprising. instead of concentrating in her signature minimal beats, maayan has experimented with different cadences, depths and moods, leaving behind her swirl a disconcerting record of inspired beauty. this art in this record is graced with photography by one of the best and most influential photographers in the world: moriyama daido. maayan asked moriyama san for permission to use the cover image, a request which moriyama san, after listening to the record, gladly accepted

exos joins forces with gotshell a.k.a alessan main, the great ambassador of the colombia electronic music scene for the fifth release on x/oz. the pair met in colombia made the decision to make music together. over the next weeks they travelled together in colombia getting inspiration from the colombian spirits. the pair also teamed up with maayan nidam for a true jungle remix to go along with four original tracks with sounds that originate and fluctuate with the deep spiritual entities of colombia.

maayan nidams second album new moon has many different levels. stylistically, the berlin-based producer has created an 11 track collection of alternative electronic rhythms that combines everything from blissful broken beat, to surrealist electro, jazzinfluenced moments, acidic house, exploratory techno, and piano interludes.

after strong releases by jerome sydenham, guti, martin buttrich and the esteemed label leaders the martinez brothers, here we have remixes of stec and chris martinez own out put by first team players. mathew johnson gives us an energetic analogue workout. peggy gou gives us a wistful version of ‘h2 da izzo’ with retro drums, lush strings to give us a straight up, classic house cut. this is also tackled by mayaan nidim who gives us a stripped back, refined take as you would expect from a perlon artist. dj deeon takes on the buoyant ‘stuff in the trunk’ with miss kittin’s playful vocals.

noahs day is the berlin-based producers second effort for perlon following 2015s visio, and its binhs first 12inch since releasing dreifach back in march. it continues a busy year for perlon, arriving after a maayan nidam release and a double-pack from spacetravel.

after the last lessizmore release found san proper and maayan nidam crossing swords for the simmering, jammed-out tones of it was a night like this, now the label turns to another close ally for a slice of discerning, upfront house music. louis mcguire lives many different lives in music, from drumming with indie pop outfit ballet school to playing bass for lo-fi electronica group the waves & us. now though his own solo productions are being noticed in the house and techno world, with this new ep following on from a well-received debut on supply records. the diversity of mcguire’s musical leanings feeds into his distinctive sound, as his own take on stripped down, sensual house music bristles with unconventional energy to make for an unforgettable experience that steps up to the most creative frontiers of dance music. live drum sounds rattle around the mix free from quantized safety, while the melodic tones come on warm and fuzzy, capturing the hazy romance of a late morning session as much as the early part of the evening. it’s apparent that mcguire’s weapon of choice is the mpc, channeling his love of gritty beats in the grand tradition of point g and j. dilla. you can hear the spirit of the most adventurous micro house pioneers in the quirky funk of light hearted, while Óreitha revels in the transcendental qualities of a sustained groove without even a whisper of monotony. even with these unusual qualities the music is resolutely built for the dancefloor, and that mcguire manages to be so creative and so focused in the same beat is reason enough to keep tabs on this multifarious and unpredictable operator.

marking the start of an exciting new collaborative project, wolf + lamb proudly share the debut release of the waves & us. formed out of a creative meeting of minds between maayan nidam, markus nikolaus and louis mcguire, theirs is a sound that strengthens the storied approach of a live band with the experimental thrust of analogue electronics. pop and rock fundamentals lend an earthly hook to the tracks, but these are anything but straight-forward songs. maayan has already forged a formidable career in electronic music, both under her own name and as part of mara trax, scoring releases on such celebrated labels as perlon. markus performs his own solo project cunt cunt chanel, while louis is part of ballet school, a band releasing on noted indie label bella union. the whirlwind of creativity that has whipped up around the trio has yielded an album which will follow this single, made up of one-take recordings that capture the energy and adventure that powers the waves & us. maayan s electronics provide the atmospheric backdrop to the songs, running modular synthesisers and drum machines through detailed chains of processing and effects with an emphasis on a warm, charmingly rough finish. markus guitar undergoes a similar fuzzy treatment while his voice calls out introspective, abstract lyrics to set the mind racing. louis bass underpins the music with a dubby sensibility, bringing a necessary balance to the frequency range. making the most of their in-the-room recording approach, the singles will feature alternative takes of the songs that will appear on the album, providing a little insight into the flutters and fluctuations that shape the development of this project. with their eyes fixed on live performances and an arresting sound already formed, this is a vital time for all three artists and the people that listen to them.

the kicks started as a collective of different musicians, electronic & instrumentalists, that gathered together under one roof just for the fun of it, coming together and jamming at their own expense. a jam is a jam. theres no aim, no target. it is free from expectations and just like that the tapes piled up with no specific style or genre lines. whatever happens, happens is pretty much the attitude that created a label, not out of necessity but out of convenience of being free to release the more outstanding cuts recorded, regardless of their personal definition. the first release is from the curators and creators of the project, maayan nidam & alex picone. the record starts with the psychedelic tone of alice in the desert, continues to a still hypnotic yet down to earth 020 and ends with the stabbing butt shaker think about it. the next releases will continue featuring picone & nidam, joined by cool cats like aquarius heaven, san proper & cesar merveille.

candy land is dj pi-ges first solo release from arpa records. it follows on from his previous collaboration with mathias kaden as unit mathi midori& pi-ge who released the konomama ep on raummusik the ep gained critical acclaim, especially for the inspiring remixes by reboot and maayan nidam. “candy land( original mix) - track one is a minimal track structured with profound bass, crunchy guitar samples and simple rhythm, peppered with minimalistic voice samples, it features a high impact breakdown. on the track 2 is a remix by christian burkhardt, one of the most remarkable producers at the moment and his tracks have been released various leading labels such as raum…musik, oslo, and cocoon to name a few. his remix fuses the characters of the original track with a unique new school rhythm and groove. on the 3rd track is deep and dark remix by dj sodeyama, label honcho of arpa records. this remix form an extended journey of over 10mins with a deep and dark introduction thats combined with experimental sounds as the track builds. all in all a great package for djs of deep house, tech house and techno.

the waiting is finally over! after all the ups and downs of the past year, we can happily report that joshua eustis now firmly intends to continue telefon tel aviv as a solo project. in order to mark his decision with a bang, thewonderful title track >immolate yourself< is being released as the second single from the current lp. the song has been entrusted to highly acclaimed and diverse remix artists who have skilfully stripped down the epic album track to more club-friendly formats.
the a side is delivered by label-mate thomas muller, whose finely detailed techno soundscapes can now be enjoyed on five bpc 12 inch releases. his >immolate< remix takes a much more direct approach. he reduces the lush arrangement of the original to a powerful basic framework, leaves out the vocals almost entirely, and creates a surprise when the track crumbles into sonic chaos towards the end.
miss fitz aka maayan nidam has had singles released on labels including raum musik and freak n chic, and these have been remixed by renowned artists such as ricardo villalobos. her version of >immolate< also makes a clear break from the album track and serves up her very own brand of abstract, dancefloor-friendly house. once again, all the opulence of the original is thrown overboard, a dry beat is placed at the centre of the arrangement and enriched with sinuous vocals.
ben klock needs no further introduction - he is the epitome of the bleak, hard minimal sound. his album >one< is currently available on ostgut ton, and as a remixer he has earned the highest acclaim for his version of depeche modes >peace<. bens >jack mix< is fittingly titled and lives up to all the expectations of the name. the track is stripped back to a resounding, hammer-like beat framework - minimised for maximum effect.
bpitch legend sascha funke delivers a surprise with another astoundingly reduced remix, at least by his standards. he turns away from the melodic richness of his current album >mango< in favour of repetitive fragments and an extended arc of tension which will surely make his >immolate< remix a massive after-hour hit.

archipels brand new sublabel brings you its second weirded out slab of wax with uli kunkels singing with rod. uli kunkel,however,is not one single artist. it is comprised of lee curtiss, maayan nidam (miss fitz) and shaun reeves.the record starts off with leethophobia which is an hypnotic breaks like piece of dark insanity laced drughouse very much inspired by the perlonian sounds which have been coming from germany as of late.drugpigs is fat, wobbly, and just as hypnotising as leethophobia and commands that the freaks come out to dance from the shadows of strange early morning corridoors.the flip takes a more direct approach and is fiercely lead by arrival which is an hypnotic take on dancefloor drive influenced tracks and is laced with clever edits and lysergic percussion.sing like rod is a totally weirded out and just as lysergic early morning rhythmic smoothy. kalimari is set to release quality weirdness and here it stands tall from the rest.

only 9 years after its official opening, watergate has become one of the worlds most prominent underground electronic music institutions. in no small part due to its picturesque location running directly alongside the river spree, its wall to wall led dance floor installation and most of all, its consistent flow of first-rate international talent performing every week. watergates presence and influence has spawned many side projects including a boutique-style mix cd series now in its 8th volume. a whoÕs who of the clubs regular talent and resident artists such as sascha funke, sebo k, dop, ellen allien and others have all contributed to the aesthetically pleasing series, now regarded as collectors items. for the eight installment in our mix series, we bridge the gap between two global capitals of techno: berlin, and detroit, home of lee curtiss who delivers a forward-thinking mix, inspired by time spent living in both cities. lee is one of a new generation of techno visionaries from the motor city, that includes his visionquest collaborators ryan crosson, shaun reeves and seth troxler, who are putting their own unique spin on their citys most famous underground musical export. based between detroit and berlin for the last four years, lee has a fundamental grasp of what makes both dancefloors at watergate tick, and this enduring love and understanding of the space clearly shines through in his mix. building on the raw soul and funk of those who have blazed a trail before him, on both sides of the atlantic, lee brings his own subtle melodies and keen sense of dramatic tension to the fore in a mix that encompasses all that is vibrant and exciting about underground techno in 2011
