manchesters indigo is an artist that was always in our sights for a horo release when the label was created. an open minded, experimental individual that takes on different tempos constantly and masters them with his own unique style to the point that the speed of the music is unrecognisable.

straight movin minimalism! the ep kicks off with >abstract<, which is the name of it. the track is driven by a strong baseline accompanied by an analogue synthesizer surface, joined by constantly shifting percussions and open hat. a-sided >jacksons< program, number two on wax, follows a jerkin hi-hat groove that shines over the whole track which never ends and injects a dance catharsis.

in the late 80s i started listening to uk radio stations when i was a little kid and i instantly fell in love with the acid sound and rave movement that was portrayed on those uk dance shows. when i got old enough to attend clubs and warehouse raves, to experience the movement first hand, it was a nobrainer for me that the music and the lifestyle was my call. lately…. in my dj sets and when producing music… i have been time travelling back to those days. back to how i remember the music i fell so deeply in love with and that is exactly what you hear on this “done/undone” release. for the “done” track i teamed up with cari golden to have a female spoken word and a great message to build the music around. i always prefer to do original vocal recordings rather than using samples. cari understood 100% what i was after and i love the lyrics and execution by her. the spoken word is centered, very clear and deep to contrast the constantly building intensity of the acid patterns and thumping beats. “undone” is instrumental and has a more straight forward flow to it. it’s quite simple although the shifting groove patterns might surprise some. i was torn between two different acid patterns and decided to drop one of them as a surprise change. playing the track in clubs i quickly learned that the change of dynamics had a great effect. both tracks have been wrapped in dark-themed chords and atmosphere. both tracks have my take on the sound i fell in love with years ago and obviously still love today. i hope you like what you hear.

in the dust of idols is an album exploring mortality, existentialism & the dread one can feel in the face of an apparently meaningless world. the journey you embark on when trying to create meaning where there is perhaps none. these initial senses of dread can be brought about by the insignificance you feel in the face of greatness, where others have seemingly found meaning and purpose in the face of your own wavering path.

by now, the story of how jlin went from working in a steel factory in gary, indiana to being one of the most widely appreciated electronic musicians is well known. “black origami” was one of the most lauded albums last year. seriously prolific and seriously hard-working, she has toured constantly since its may 2017 release and despite being involved in a wide range of projects, still manages to find a balance and time to “do some personal healing and growing.”
here we are over a year later with “autobiography,” the score for her collaboration with renowned british choreographer wayne mcgregor (a collaboration arranged by krakow’s unsound). this isn’t technically her third album (that’s due to arrive in 2019 or 2020), but the soundtrack stands up on its own with all the emotional peaks and troughs of a well-sequenced lp.

dutch label field records is back with another special album project, this time from japanese producer ena aka yu asaeda. bridge is an introspective soundtrack for a documentary also called bridge - out this spring - which is about the dejima bridge, a reconstructed symbol of the dutch-japanese trading history in nagasaki, japan. the album finds the producer stepping outside of his usual remit of dark ambient and experimental music, and instead comprises ten shorter tracks that touch on abstract and rhythmic sounds that define the essence of japanese culture. although he has worked with the director before, this is ena s first original sound track and finds him freely inspired by the movie and heading in exciting and unknown directions. hugely atmospheric throughout, there is hypnotic repetition of sounds, strange audio design and a mixture of melancholic moods with more dreamy synths. sometimes gloopy rhythms gently ripple beneath soothing harmonies and at others times a micro-rhythm appears through the constantly shifting and evolving found sound loops. it s a compelling and unusual album that seamlessly mixes human emotions with a mechanical sense of industry.

with »redsuperstructure«, robert lippok created a new foundation for his musical endeavors. now – 7 years later – this system properly comes to life on »applied autonomy«. the title of the new album is a clear indicator as to what the berlin-based producer has been up to during the last couple of years, both on a conceptual level as well as how he molds his ideas into tracks. »applied autonomy« orchestrates a certain state of frantic standstill, which occurs once a structure is set. has this state been reached, the artist is free to focus on other equally important aspects, balancing the various shades, pushing ideas even further to really make them shine and blossom in their self-declared autonomy. the more light one lets in, the more layers become visible. layers are key when it comes to understanding »applied autonomy«. big chunks of the material with which the album has been produced derive from sketches specifically made for a club performance. rather than meticulously devising each and every detail, lippok focussed instead on recording as many fragments as possible in a short period of time, elements which he could later combine and layer on stage. based on this material and his experience experimenting with it in a live environment, the album slowly began to shape. an album culminating in a collaboration with klara lewis, with whom lippok spent 2 days at the ems studios in stockholm, approaching the idea of autonomy from yet another angle. during the session, both musicians played and performed simultaneously, yet not explicitly together, lost in their own thoughts and ideas, only subconsciously taking in what the other one was coming up with. the result is »samtal«, 14 minutes of a constantly evolving state of poise, magically connecting all the dots lippok had already defined as »applied autonomy«. the artwork for »applied autonomy« has been created by the berlin-based argentinian artist luca gutierrez. over the last couple of years, he has made a name for himself with his spectacular av performances.

after an excellent 12inch on rosten label sstrom drops his first full length otider, which is by far the most diverse offering of the project encompassing elements of different genres and putting them in woolen and dense sonic textures. otider could be loosely translated as un-times or non-times. it positions the tracks out of specific context and rather represents them as some rediscovered artifacts relating to personal experiences of the artist. otider slightly distances sstrom from techno label as the compositions elegantly drift between lush transparency and thick grooves of outsider/lo-fi house as in kronofobi or svvaren or sensitive, yet subtly monolith and mellow techno on damm and i huvudet. in modernisten we can even trace echoes of coldwave/synth aesthetics with melancholic guitars sweeping over hypnotic rhythmic patterns, while closer sov nu introduces something which reminds a darker form of garage music with light synthpads constantly surfacing among raw mechanical beats. all the tracks were created over a relatively long period between 2010 and 2017 by employing the process where he let his hands work automatically without interference from his head. this freedom could be felt across the release, which juggles with different musical forms so lightly and organically, but at the same time maintains a coherent vision, which illustrates the vast scope and diversity of the artist.
