having recently relocated to the remote redwood forests of northern california in order to set up a satellite mixing studio for his old stomping ground, glasgows green door studio, sordid sound system returns to invisible inc with 4 cuts of psychedelic dungeon disco. the ep opens with his most blissed out track to date die ewige nacht, an eight and a half minute inverted sun ritual based around shimmering cascades of dubbed up electronic percussion and an overdriven tintinnabulated fm arp. hi-nrg meets 80s b-boy electro on crescent city with a careering off-road excursion into tripped out mutant carnival cavalcade territory. dia de muertos offbeat eerie percussion and driving low frequencies are met with spectral buzzing melodic refrains from the furthermost reaches of a decaying oaxacan cemetery. the acid drenched ambient lullaby you & me brings proceedings to a fittingly fucked up close. sordid sound syste’s last release on invisible inc, 2017s fear eats the soul, received plays and praise from the likes of manfredas, trevor jackson, sascha funke, optimos jd twitch and thomas von party.

‘fear eats the soul’ is the third release from sordid sound system on invisible inc. his previous two records ‘in a year of 13 moons’ and ‘lux exterior’ have been getting plays from the likes of andrew weatherall, manfredas, john talabot, idjut boys and thomas von party. describing ‘fear eats the soul’ as a concept ep made by four imaginary bands from detroit, new york, paris and munich, sordid sound system says: “i’m pissed off with passive aggressive shabby chic artisan boutiques besieging my studio and complaining about the noise, i’m pissed off with coked up yuppy hipsters in land rovers taking over my neighbourhood with fancy restaurants with names that sound like fucking law firms, i’m pissed off at the resurgence of the far right and creeping fascism, i’m pissed off with self sabotaging english and american voters and the neo liberal corporate elites that have pissed away opportunities and alienated them, i’m pissed off with modern recording technology creating a sea of homogenous unimaginative beige bullshit, and i’m really pissed off that my favourite drummer jaki leibezeit is dead, but apart from that it’s all good, enjoy the new record.”

lux exterior is the long player follow up to sordid sound system’s debut ep in a year of 13 moons (invinc 04) which came out last year garnering plays from the likes of andrew weatherall, manfredas, mr tc, mutant disco and krossfingers.
the vinyl release is limited to 299 copies and includes a download code.

more analog machine music hot off the tape from glasgow s green door recording studio. sordid sound system has recorded and mixed the likes of golden teacher, the amazing snakeheads, whilst, and the junto club, and this debut ep is the product of late night after hours recording sessions utilising the studio s tascam ms16 tape machine, a korg ms10 and a rusty roland space echo amongst other obscure electronic toys and gadgets.

that summer i developed somewhat of an obsession with tonto’s expanding head band after having seen them perform at the big chill festival that year. the music blew my mind. later upon my return to civilisation and the ensuing research which then began in earnest i became as much blown away by the enormous t.o.n.t.o. (the original new timbral orchestra) modular synthesizer that had created the music as i was by the music itself. built in the early 70s, it s still the largest synthesizer around today. with the live show still resonating in my head i tracked down everything tonto had ever recorded. one of these tracks was an obscure outtake from the time t.o.n.t.o.’s creators, malcolm cecil and robert margouleff, were producing and engineering for stevie wonder in the ‘70s(https://youtu.be/wuaszff7yq0). the track, bittersweet, only ever appeared on a highly limited self-released cd put together to coincide with their appearance at the big chill. consequently i featured it on a few mixes i did over the years and invariably i’d be asked “what’s that track?” by those with an ear for something unique. and invariably these same people, many of them djs, would turn away disgruntled when i informed them it was cd only. although i didn t know it at the time, the seed was definitely sown for this vinyl compilation that you now hold in your hands.

what does teen spirit smell like, anyway? it might smell something like noise addict. like the real life stars of some sort of choose-your-own-adventure book about pursuing rock stardom, few bands ever led a more charmed existence, springing from the sydney suburb of bondi into seemingly overnight international fame as friends and collaborators of sonic youth, fugazi, and the beastie boys. through a combination of relentless drive, luck, and an admirable lack of self-doubt, noise addict spanned puberty to surpass the haters and join radio birdman and nick cave as a strange but permanent piece of australian punk history.
compiled here are 25 tracks, including their evan dando-worshipping satire “i wish i was him,” the thurston moore produced demo, choice cuts from their grand royal-issued ep and lp, and covers of “let’s lynch the landlord” and “back in your life.” the entire sordid adolescent tale is covered in incredible detail inside the black and white 16 page zine. and finally, for the first time in the history of record pressing, and for no good reason at all, the cover for 10.000 kids with guitars doubles as a working chalkboard.

known more for their dubby kosmische and psychedelic post-disko, glasgow label invisible inc seem to be wandering closer to the realms of the nightclub dancefloor these days. not that anyone s complaining. with recent outings by strange culture and sordid sound system taking the lead, this one by budapest s bal5000 is quite possibly their most dancefloor friendly release yet. all four cuts inhabit a space somewhere at the very edge of house but are steeped in soaringly cosmic italo-esque synth lines and bubbling, motorik arpeggios reminiscent of early 80s minimal.....the result is a real sonic treat: hypnotically transcendant, yet beautifully melodic, and all solidly underpinned by some seriously low-end sub-bass, tight rhythms and pistol-sharp snares.

first vinyl pressing of twin infinitives since the original vinyl issue in 1990. after moving to san francisco, royal trux released the highly experimental double album twin infinitives. this album remains an extreme work on the periphery of rock music, worthy of being compared to lou reeds metal machine music and suicides debut album. at only four subdivided tracks, none of which clock in under 15 minutes, the record has plenty of time to weave a mesmerizing web that is sometimes menacing, sometimes startling. for all of its high brow allusions, twin infinitives nearly reeks of vice, a dark, sordid feel pervades the record, and the listener can almost picture the band recording in a filthy apartment in the middle of the night in various states of intoxication and debauchery.
