max loderbauer, who has so far made consistently engaging contributions to the arjunamusic family, is back to lend his unique interpretive skills to the master recordings for the brightbird album by joão paulo esteves da silva, mário franco and samuel rohrer. loderbauer has set himself up for a challenge, since the original album’s completely improvised flow of small-ensemble, conversational jazz feels complete enough without outside intervention. however, loderbauer’s role as electronics operator in the similarly attuned ambiq trio has already shown that, through his mastery of tone color, he has a talent for teasing out the additional hidden details within an apparently ‘complete’ sonic environment. it’s a task he manages to accomplish without ever overriding or contradicting the cohesive message provided by his collaborators.

the second ep of samuel rohrer’s range of regularity album presents two more striking reinterprations. burnt friedman’s own dramatic interpre-tation of “microcosmoism” pairs up his consciousness of deep bass and analog inventiveness with rohrer’s continually transforming sound ob-jects, making for a flowing and wordless narrative that simply dares listen-ers to stop paying attention. feeling more like a collaboration in “real time” than a remix proper, friedman brings his characteristic ‘mad scientist’ wit to the proceedings and delivers an energetic piece that simply glows in the dark.

the second ep of samuel rohrer’s range of regularity album presents two more striking reinterprations. these new remixes provide an intriguing parallax view of the original tracks, using the percussive eclecticism of the parent lp as a starting point from which to journey into sonically vibrant, feature-rich territories. the production specialists on hand for this project include burnt friedman and ricardo villalobos. villalobos, has already formed a strong working relationship with rohrer’s ambiq trio, lends his talents to both of the eps. samuel rohrer, the multi-faceted, forward-thinking percussio- nist and producer behind the arjunamusic label, the ambiq trio and a wealth of other musical projects, has set out on his own with a new full-length solo album range of regularity as a double ep set with a deceptive title if ever there was one: the sonic experience of this record is, in fact, a highly irregular one (and a highly welcome one at that). constructed almost entirely upon electronically-treated recordings of acoustic in- strumentation, with a bare minimum of synthesizer voicing, ror vibrates with a compelling organicism as if old-growth black forest trees had conspired together to make an album of ultra-modern improvisational music. indeed, the record feels limned with contributions from some other intelligence, despite being a clear extension of the fluid, percussion-driven musical technique that rohrer has exhibited in previous years.

songs without words, suggestive and emotional transparency and connection, contemplation and departure, meditation and attack: this music fascinates from the very beginning. it has no need to boast or become talkative, but stays true to itself as it casually develops its poignant pulse and lets it grow, and grow. the web of sounds soon begins to radiate from within, it inspires images in ones head, and invites to musing and introspection. against the background of a wide horizon the details of their music join, develop a life of their own, and lift off to collective flights of ideas. this music is an invitation to listen without prejudice, offering a way to get lost in dreams while, at the same time, remaining solidly grounded and completely awake.

tyler friedman brings a hyper-realism to the table which meshes in very interesting ways with rohrer’s conversational percussive instincts. sounds like villalobos meets burnt friedmann.

its winter in detroit and fit siegel has given us * carmine*, a moody techno classic perfect for the lonely season. subtle, low-key and thumping, the title track revolves around a bittersweet piano lead, elegiac 303 and blade runner string swells. its a high-tech driving song in the tradition of model 500s low-key classic * pick up the flow* and fit sounds more assured than ever. * first found* is mills-ian jigsaw puzzle techno imbued with breathy and addictive humanity. stacatto, free-jazz informed piano solos lock into ping-pong synths -- eventually, a female vocal emerges over a bed of arpeggiated bass. loose yet robotic, * first found* is first-rate detroit techno mysticism. the record as a whole is a worthy entry into the motor citys storied canon from a leader of the new school.
