new zealand based crate digger frank booker invites good friend julien dyne to drop the second release on his new imprint down in the basement. jd picks up where the man called booker left off on vol 1 and gets straight up to speed cutting up rare boogie, disco and afro jams and employing his trademark raw cuts in an old school style, while lacing oodles of fx n stuff into the mix. the overall sound is reminiscent of the early idjut boys material, which is so close to mr booker s heart.

shift work are an electronic duo who have previously released on jd twitch’s glasgow label optimo. they debut on houndstooth with ‘document ii’, an ep developed from live jams on outboard analogue gear. ‘abandoned hands’ is lean and raw, an angular bassline and indecipherable vox punctuating the relentless 4/4 kick drum and pattering percussion. ‘sbfm’ is fuller-bodied, with the modulating bassline taking centre stage, draped in loose synths and topped with a deadpan vocal refrain. shift work invited remixes from their associates, with dva damas dialling down the tempo and stripping back ‘abandoned hands’ further still, whilst factory floor return to remix duty on houndstooth with a typically subtle yet infectious building groove. cut and mastered by matt colton at alchemy and limited to 500 copies worldwide.

solimano returns to his unlock recordings imprint with two mellow house cuts, featuring a pair of imaginative reinterpretations from fellow argentinean’s barem and deep mariano. originally established to promote latin american productions in 2004, unlock recordings has since hosted the likes of jorge savoretti and guti. its founder, gonzalo solimano, has proven himself time again as a label owner, dj and producer, working as a ‘mr. x’ at red bull academy for almost ten years when not performing at the likes of creamfields buenos aires, south american music conference and space world tour. ‘learjet’ is a low-slung groover complete with organic samples, bass guitar licks and a hypnotically looped vocal sample. up first on remix duties, minus regular barem subdues the raw textures of the original to generate an understated rendition, whereas get slow founder deep mariano takes it down a percussive route where an infectious rhythm is accompanied by dub inspired synths. finally, ‘calling again’ is a sensual deep house cut featuring the vocals of sophie taylor, known for her collaboration with mathias kaden, among many others.

ibiza based francisco allendes makes a welcome return to desolat for his next release, a fine ep that marks something of a new direction for the man across its four great tracks. first up, 2agility queen is a raw bit of jacking house with clipped vocals offered up by dance manias dj dmc, bulky drums and classic cow bell tinkles all making for a sweaty and heavy house kicker.

toronto hustles kick their ep off with the classic house sound of in your mind . mr fingers style bassline over chunky chords and a well chosen rasta vocal sample builds an infectious house groove. just enough is perfect terrace material and will keep those early morning deep house heads happy. the raw cut brings a tougher groove to the ep, reminiscent of that roper mid 90 s us house sound from chicago.

dutch producer frits wentink continues to flourish in the follow up to his debut lp rarely pure never simple that was released on wolf music back in march this year. throughout releases on heist and wolf, frits has consistently drawn for his arsenal of synths, effects and drum machines and through doing so has stitched a sound characterised by raw drums, analogue bass tones and odd, lo-fi samples.

the sophomore ep by label head n conduit. the name and inspiration for the pumps ep is derived from new yorks infamous strip club, pumps. located on the border of queens and brooklyn on the english kills canal, its one of the last holdouts of seedy and unkempt brooklyn, now that the high rises and artisanal establishments have taken over. the pumps ep consists of three original tracks and a remix that are supposed to capture whats left of this through raw analog sequences and drum programming.

anubis ep wants to bring back metaphorically that solid foundation of reality through music and feeling. the first track, anubis, like the egyptian god, provides a safe passage to another world through its dub chords, dark techno berlinish synths and hidden messages in the voices scatters on the whole track. the remix, made by canadian based artist hooll, has a more minimal and deep dub approach completing perfectly the other side of the journey. finally the last track, thoth, represents a mediating energy between dark and light with raw low ends and groovy percussions creating a wormhole like journey for the listener.
