the legendary gig that joe strummer, singer from the punk rock band “the clash” attended and inspired his writing their classic ‘white man in hammersmith palais’ took place on the 05th june 1977. at the hammersmith palais venue on shepherd’s bush road w6, london during the height of punk mania. the full line up for the show were all jamaican artists dillinger, leroy smart, delroy wilson (all the first time from jamaica) and ken boothe. “ken boothe for uk pop reggae” who had already scored some hits with ‘everything i own’ and ‘crying over you’ in 1974. joe strummer was expecting roots, rock, reggae but the sound system this evening ‘admiral ken sound’ was playing ‘four tops all night’ as in soul and northern soul that were staple crowd pleasers at the time to warm up the audience, but in joe’s eyes the music should have reflected more jamaican roots based music. the song also deals with bigger issues of black and white unity, but some people including the punk rockers. “they’re all too busy fighting, for a good place under the lighting”. joe strummer himself was looking for fun. “i’m the whiteman in the palais... just looking for fun”.

limited to 300 copies with sticker and picture - here we have silk cutlery, the debut ep from jive talk on white label only imprint, not for you records. it’s upfront, chunky and totally tight disco to make you, well, jive! first up is love jones, a bouncy bassline and delicious pitched up vocal illustrate the producers shrewd ear for uncomplicated grooves and is clearly primed for the dancefloor. percussie sanway builds gloriously into an out and out stream roller of a track with its glitzy tinges and irresistible bass drive. wrapping up the record we have some low slung crunk, guided by a vocal tease from wycleff throughout. on repeat! this tantalising inception from the london boys is surely a pledge to everything that is right about the genre. grab it while it’s hot!

rushmore is a 1998 soundtrack to the wes anderson film of the same name. the songs mostly blend raw, adolescent urges and insecurity with an awkward grace, composed primarily of popular music from the 1960s. continuing with its soundtrack initiative, ume will be reissuing this classic soundtrack back on vinyl for the first time in years.
the 1998 wes anderson film, rushmore, starred bill murray, jason schwartzman, olivia williams, seymour cassel, and luke wilson. the soundtrack was scored by mark mothersbaugh and also features music by the kinks, cat stevens, the who, john lennon, zoot sims, faces, and more.

the two track evolutions ep sees enzo siragusa and alexkid each give us their own personal take on the infamous kilimanjaro sound. label head enzo once again fuses his junglist past with sleek tech beats on the a side in the form of desire skippy percussion imbuing the track with a real sense of funk before a monster 90s style b-line cuts through the mix to really nail the floor.

2012 was without doubt the breakthrough year for south london ordnance. in the space of twelve months the 23 year old artist put out three separate 12 inches alongside a five track ep, which garnered support from jamie xx, scuba, benji b, mary ann hobbes, mosca, claude vonstroke, richie hawtin and more. his jungle-advised, finely honed productions also rightly earned him notable mention in several annual end of year roundups including dj mags best of british 2012, xlr8rs 4th best new act of 2012 (alongside disclosure and karenn), and time out uks djs to watch in 2013. with this debut outing on hotflush recordings scheduled for march, 2013 is set to be yet another strong year for the young producer.

b-stock! cover with seam split. vinyl unaffected & mint. them records welcomes back hiroaki iizuka for the its fifth outing. having supplied the the run as the labels first record, here iizuka doubles its play time and track listing length in his stunning voodoo ep. the extra time offered allows iizuka to flex more of his versatile style. them as a label sets out to eschew a techno norm largely made up of a traditional 4 x 4 sound. having come from a london background, the curating of the label gives a nod to the rave sounds of the capital - especially d&b, garage, breakbeat hardcore and grime. that is to say of course along with its characteristic aesthetic of horror and the gothic.
in iizuka them found a common ground: based in hokkaido, japan, iizuka does not share the same london influences, yet shares their base values and thrust. common themes of his sound involve broken and syncopated beats, and a rave energy. this is what lead him to being the first and prime them stable artist. voodoo ep showcases this breadth of iizuka’s style, from tracks that could easily fit into any grime set, such as primitive acid, to the more melodic tones of floating point, in which hiroaki guides them into previously untrodden ground for the imprint.
