gnawa is a uniquely moroccan sound with roots in islam and links to a healing ritual called lila (arabic for night). from this heritage comes innov gnawa, the only new york-based gnawa group made from moroccan natives, led by the mâalem (master) hassan ben jaafer. in 2016, pique-nique recordings presented their debut ep together and, since then, the band have also featured on bambro koyo ganda from bonobo s latest album. aicha is their much anticipated follow-up. alongside the joyous call and response between the maalem and the group that s common in gnawa, there are also hints of electronic programming interspersed between the traditional live instrumentation no doubt an influence of nicolas jaar collaborator dave harrington who produced the ep.

dolly is proud to welcome parisian wunderkind coni to the label. operating on the brink of meditative house and (detroit) techno, nicolas oliers particularly hypnotic offering will certainly stand out in any set. the title track caligula is a slowly developing, climactic techno burner with icey, imperial strings hovering over it. a2 electroflash is a more warm, lush, deep-into-sunday-afternoon bubbler with a distinct french feel, topping breezy chords with a sharp hook to give it edge. with fellow parisian bambounou joining coni on the flip side, medusa goes deeper into percussive territory with a pulsating bongo riddim embraced by haunting organ pads perfect for those all-lights-off moments. a beast with many heads!

on “rest in space”, his first full length outing for music for dreams, the lp keeps a steady pace of around 90-95 bpm, but never gets repetitive with islandman taking us on a rich and ever surprising journey, full of quirky turns and mysterious instrumentations. the opener “rest in space” treats us to a funky percussion-thick rhythm that lounges into a pool of playful & jazzy horn & flute arrangements. this is followed by the epic “night wind” which sweeps across cinematic desert landscapes of synth layers and falls into a dark night time groove reminiscent of nicolas jaar & dave harrington’s darkside project. “seikleos” centers around a motorik electronic rhythm pattern (not unlike the classic electro-pop classic “popcorn”) that develops into a chugging balearic house jam while stand out track “future days” brings in a female guest vocalist to complete the album with a breezy full on groover that echoes of both sheila chandra and tom tom club. also included is the previously released digital single “agit” as well as a remix by berlin-based m.rux, toning down the heavy guitar of the original in favor of a more bouncier interpretation. the stunning “ikaru” wades in through chunks of jungle ambiance and watery percussion to lounge along on a rubbery funk bassline, coupled with a heavy laid back beat and wobbly derelict synth figures. “tawhid” is an odd mix of new wave brilliance and prog momentum that breaks into a cascade of pouring rain and surprising percussion breaks. lastly comes gorgeous eastern guitar opus “the true word of the wind” and the warm vibey dreamscape “following”. as a whole, islandman delivers a delicate buffet of influences - spanning the spectrum from hazy balearic pop to tropical new age flirts to deep spiritual psychedelic jamming.

joe claussell joined the mushroom house series! the new york city dj and music originator made one of his rare remixes. for the toy tonics series. claussell is a pioneer. blending african and brazilian rhythms with disco and house since the early 1990ies. inspiring the music world with his labels spiritual life music and ibadan records and with his legendary body & soul parties that he run for 6 years with francois k and danny krivit in nyc. for toy tonics he remixed an obscure afro funk song by german afro - kraut band karl hector & the malcouns and nicolas tounga, singer from burkina faso.

new imprint ocd’s first release comes from portland native aaron carlson who, with his ac$ alias, has generated quite a buzz in underground circles of late, off the back of a few highly sought-after records. ‘do u know what u represent?’ is a slice of rolling tech-house that utilises vocal snippets amidst a flurry of 909 hats while the rhodes-laced ’more odds’ dials up the swing with a nod to early prescription releases. on the b side, ‘just like you’ is a more heady affair, seeing lazy chords sitting over a nebulous bassline and assorted weirdness, while the acid-tinged, atmospheric ‘organ morph’ is sure to find favour with fans of binh or nicolas lutz.

the fifth instalment of get physicals body language mix series comes courtesy of chateau flight, aka gilbert cohen and nicolas chaix. including exclusive remixes and tracks from fox n wolf, henrik schwarz and chateau flight themselves. nicolas and gilbert first joined forces in 1996, and over the last years they ve made quite a name for themselves as producers and remixers, not to mention djs and live performers.

inspired by a french 19th century etching, nicolas chaix (a.k.a i:cube under his moniker icola) made these 4 diabolical percussion driven tracks during the hot summer of 2016. ultra heavy and trippy music for the body and the mind.

neben der cd und der 2lp+cd mit coverversionen erscheint eine streng limitierte prachtbox, die nicht nur diese, sondern auch bisher unveröffentlichten originalaufnahmen aus den frühen neunziger jahren, sowie einer verspäteten extended version, die die band selbst noch einmal eingespielt hat enthält. neben den coverversionen, die ja eigentlich alle die zeitlosigkeit der sterne zelebrieren, findet sich in dem in jeglicher hinsicht hochwertigen lp-boxset (gestaltet von yannick riemer von isolation berlin) dann noch etwas, das wohl doch als relikt bezeichnet werden kann. zwei demos der sterne, kleine schritte stolpern und sturm über der hallig, zeigen auf 7-inch-vinyl eine frühe version der band, ganz im charme ihrer hanseatischen jugendlichkeit (1991). die sterne selbst und erobique, sowie pollyester auf der flip, markieren auf einer ebenfalls beiliegenden disco-12-inch das andere ende des zeitstrahls (2016). so werden die beigaben plötzlich zur klammer eines kleinen universums, in dem sich aufzeigt, dass musik am schönsten ist, wenn sie nach 25 jahren bandgeschichte noch immer zwischen lustvoller virtuosität und dem charme des dilettantismus zu pendeln vermag, bringt es hendrik otremba, sänger der band messer im info zum album auf den punkt.

obbatuké are an 8-piece rumba group from santiago de cuba, lead by renowned quinto player carlos guerra. the band are mainstays at the casa del caribe, widely regarded as the epicentre for the eastern rumba scene.
rumba is a percussive-led genre descended from africa which was formed when mixed with spanish influences in the ports of havana and matanzas.
as innovators in the genre, obbatuké have been a huge inspiration to the manana project, and were involved in collaborations at this year’s event with plaid, quantic, nicolas jaar and london based breakthrough act, ariwo. this particular session was recorded at castlesound studios in edinburgh on the band’s first trip outside of cuba. it features three different sub-genres of rumba and an extended yoruba bata piece called orun seco.

mystery, poetry, a play of masks: artistic creation according to john cravache. his collaboration with versatile dates back to the beginning of the millennium. a childhood friend of i:cube, he is 44 years old, lives in a paris suburb, and is not a professional artist. getting involved in writing, he has been boasting his artistic and economic independence and his crafty attitude outside of the industrial system. he gave himself time to invent a personal world, wild and funny, which eventually gave birth to the album -cités nomades-. even though his influences are quite varied and avant-garde (magma, captain beefheart, tom waits), they did not really affect this unclassifiable project. poetry and mystery come before all, because john cravache is appearing masked. john cravache and nicolas chaix (i:cube) have recorded radio creations since the early 90s, in particular for chimère fm in paris, as well as numerous long improvised music sessions. at the approach of the millennium, they embarked on the creation of an album that was not completed until sixteen (!) years later. john is a poet, accomplished pianist, and registered truck driver and nicolas, a self-taught musician, have both made the realisation of -cités nomades- possible. this is not an ironic pop album, this album is simply all you want. listening will do you much good

aladdin is an atypical project at versatile, even for versatiles standards. in the base, the group consisted of nicolas ker singer, chaotic poet (known from poni hoax, paris, and his solo project yet to emerge) and gilbert cohen, boss of the label. the two met in the studio after breaking up with their then-girlfriends, resulting in an album filled with inner pressure.

after a series of releases on hakt recordings, nicolas jaar’s other people and a collab with kasper bjorke, abstraxion returns to his own biologic records which he co-manages with dc salas? not only is this his first solo ep on the label since a few years, its also the second release to celebrate biologics 10th anniversary year. resonance comprises of the original cut and three remixes. pressing on grey marbled vinyl.

the 05 poly 800 loop ep was born in the name of the dutch-hungarian friendship when dj overdose collaborated with the budapest based record label dalmata daniel, and hungarian acts, s olbricht & 12z. a wide range of styles release from dark and mid-tempo to hard-hitting electro. just how we like it from mister model man. the ep also features two remixes both of which are complete reworks of the originals. s olbricht (farbwechsel, opal tapes, lobster theremin) transformed path to wrath into a dark abstract techno wave that manages to end up light and romantic. meanwhile 12z, the newest mascot of nicolas jaar s other people label have made an experimental symphony from be(h)anger and this pathos covers the whole essence of this ep.
