the voices of east harlem were an ensemble of vocalists who for just sunshine records recorded two albums under the direction of leroy hutson and curtis mayfield. “cashing in” is one of their most classic songs, a highly sought after track on original 7” fetches between £40 and £80 on the collectors market. first recorded and released in 1973 it has all the hallmarks of a leroy hutson composition and an established audience that crosses the boundaries of northern, crossover and modern soul. the song is coupled here with “take a stand”, another highly regarded and sought after modern soul room dance floor tracks, never previously released on 7” single until now

sometimes you have to put out a recdord for yourself. i first heard the east of underground lp from malcom catto in the jazzman records office in around 2000, after a couple of years i managed to pick one up for $100 from a soundtrack dealer who did not know what he had. now there is a few bangers on the lp but i have always thought is was the ballads that deserve the shine, so after a chat with egon at now-again i managed to sort out putting my two favorites on 45 for that end of the night slowy. hopeflly a few of you will enjoy this one also.

a strange confluence of sound that sounds part krautrock synth label brain records, part hyperdub. techno haze and synth wormholes with spectacular sound design that has banged at berghain and soundtracked winter night drives. greenspan is known mainly for his work with junior boys and jessy lanza and taraval is a longtime touring member of caribou, but both have released several 12” and eps of electronic exploration over the past few years. inspired by synthesizer minimalists like jd emmanuel, cluster and john carpenter, the two attempted to create a type of dance music with hardware that was indebted to their influences but did not feel intrinsically retrogressive. the idea was to make a type of raw synthesizer and drum machine music that could be listened to beside the hypermodern techno of pearson sound or actress. the cover art is a tribute to a mysterious mural that looms over the hamilton ontario area where the album was recorded. each of the five tracks on the ep were edited down from much longer recording jams which were done with hardware sequencers in real time. the recording was done completely off the floor with no overdubs or added material after the fact.

oraculo records looks to the past in very few occasions and monomen deserves to be one of the exceptions. the norvegian band momonen released back in 2007 one of the best electronic post-punk albums of the beginning of xxi centurty on trust me records, not only for the music quality but because all the band members had only 19 years old at the time. suddenly the band gets dissolved after only 1 ep and 1 album. now, 10 years later, oraculo records proudly recovers the best tracks of their album (+1 one of the previous ep) on a record that will be very searched and valued. all tracks mastered and remastered specially for vinyl by eric van wonterghem at prodam studio (berlin).

paul hester created his cult moon music label in 1997 as a portal for his own productions and sounds. the label was short-lived, with only 3 releases in it s catalogue, all produced by hester himself. those few releases on moon are now highly sought after among house and techno aficionados who are forever seeking that deeper groove. the interesting part of this story, beyond the amazing music that was released, is that there are many other tracks that never saw the light of the day, thus leaving the full moon story untold. roll on to the year 2000, hester unleashes the never enough ep, a 4 track collection of tracks that ooze his own unique sound. deep, rolling, crisp drum programming, breakbeats and swelling synth pads all form the classic moon music vibe. this fully remastered reissues tracks are all lovingly transferred from paul hester s private, personal dat stash. classic, deep uk techno sounds from the pre-millenium era, re-presented for the first time for 2017s dancefloors. across this ep we are treated to a sound that is timeless and will undoubtedly gain paul hester new fans while reminding those of us who were there in the late 90s / early noughties about his subtle and uniquely fresh production style.

before boogie funk had a resurgence in 2012, ruckazoid was dropping rare funk albums in 2004. his demos were floating around la, but it wasn’t until 2009 that breakbot remixed ruckazoid’s original “life’s fantasy”, which was later released in 2011 as an original track titled “fantasy” on ed banger records. fantasy became a breakout hit scoring a #1 single on itunes. in 2013 when daft punk released “get lucky” featuring pharrell, funk was officially back in the mainstream. those in the know knew breakbot & ruckazoid helped rekindle the funk flame worldwide. after all, the label ed banger is headed by busy p, and busy p managed daft punk. suprinsingly, ruckazoid did not tour with breakbot, opting to stay in the studio to record more albums. amazing lover being one of these albums, with love game becoming the lead track.

reissue of a classic! the label: tk records in essence represents the city of miami when it came to soul/r&b and the early stages of disco. in 1974, george mccrae gave the label its first no. 1 disco hit with rock your baby. a little more than a year after mccrae s hit, the record label struck gold with kc & the sunshine band with five 1 songs on the billboard hot 100. needless to say at the height of the genreÆs cultural domination tk did pretty well.

bomb after bomb! a new my rules records original coming straight from label boss justin van der volgen. fresh off the back of his latest ep which featured peak-time versions of shit robot s lose control and felix dickinson s burning flame , this one sees him on a whole other but no less floor-filling trip. coming in regular and dub mixes, no vacancy sounds like a lost brooklyn dub-soca-reggae-house classic. the a side charges with warped machine percussion, chanting vocals, a militant rhythm section and a seriously heavy bass line. flip to the b side and check justin s impressive dub skills. stripping the track back, he maintains complete propulsive energy, all the while adding plenty of psychedelic twists sure to melt minds. expect to hear your favourite leftfield, deep-digging, big room selector dj ripping the dance all year with this.

making a splash with rs019 is a newcomer called mallard. discovered by bradley after being front and centre for almost every rs dance since 2016, the south london based producer and multi-instrumentalist makes a serious first impression with his debut ep ‘verte’.
currently studying jazz double-bass at trinity school of music, mallard’s productions demonstrate a keen ear for groove with a level of musicality rarely heard in electronic productions. at just 20 years old, he has already developed a unique sound palette and prodigious production style set to make him a name we will only hear more of in the years to come.
this ep, at once varied in tone and tempo is held together by a strong sonic identity and an overarching artistic vision: from the morphing polyrhythmic percussion of ‘surface’ to the shifting, heady pattern of ‘aquitaine’ via the psychedelic breaks of ‘untitled’ we are taken on quite the trip.
