julian stetter might be best known as one half of the electronic pop duo vimes, but he is no stranger to the cologne club scene. his debut ep insides stems from a long history of djing and organising underground parties across the city. a resident dj and collaborator at colognes famed jackwho club, it was these surroundings that drove stetter to dive deep into producing. his first solo project is now set to be released on the label pnn. it features three tracks plus a remix by beyou. stetters sound is polished and the precise production of each three tracks make this ep feel far from debut. emily, the main track of the single, draws you in on shimmering waves that rise and break into a deeper and spacier sound. warm beats are interjected with random snippets of whale song. listening to emily feels like receiving a welcome hug at an after party.

catch recordings is one of the uks most interesting underground labels and to mark its 10th release it is back with another essential ep featuring four fresh tracks from swedish artist, random island records owner, inter gritty, who has previously released on labels like rise and deep moves. not to mention his own random islands works. since the birth of random island in 2012 he has carved out a singular sonic niche for himself with various solo eps and albums and also his partnership with nihad tule as ntta11.

quanta records’ third release, correspondances, is a mini lp by aeon that combines experimental techno, ambient and musique concrète elements. the tracks of the album communicate through similar sounds, noises and rhythmic patterns, but while atmospheres diverge, there is a constant exchange from cold and industrial to solar and melodious so as to form a complex and balanced ensemble.
aeon’s has placed randomness at the centre of his creative process. computing and random programming have allowed the artist to explore new structures and to no longer simply consider a glitch as an error, but rather as a primal source of novel sound.

there’s much to be said for chance meetings. vitruvians – in their words, “a meeting of minds, cultures, styles and experiences, powered by music, and designed by faith” – owe their very existence to once such random encounter.
in the summer of 2014, producers frankie valentine and thomas “t-ash” sciurpa bumped into each other in a london shoe shop. over a fine selection of brogues and loafers, the conversation drifted onto music. the duo quickly realized they had much in common, and a plan began to form: they would get together and make music as vitruvians, using the alias as a vehicle for their collaborative work.

&apos’s music veers between abstract, experimental compositions and more beat driven tracks, all held together by a defined aesthetic of sonic impurities and random patterns thrown up by algorithmic computations. in &apos’s music compositional decisions are not merely reliant on himself but also on a range of processes from constrained randomness to full fledged neural networks. that is to say, the ‘instruments’ he creates have -to a certain extent- a mind of their own. there will always be a dynamic between the musician and something else that triggers, proposes or decides what will happen to the music.it is exactly from this human-machine interaction that &apos extrapolates his musical ideas that are both intricate and detailed while never losing an overall sense of emotional value. his first solo project ‘lichtdrank’ is a selection of four tracks made during his time studying sonology at the hague’s royal conservatory and the time following. it is the third and final installment of bepotel s startuplabel trilogy. previously, he has released music together with walrus and sagat under several musical projects like smaakwaterval and bepotel. the artwork of the lichtdrank ep is based on screenshots from an interactive multiplayer video game where the musical universe of &apos can be explored.

it is very difficult to present david duriez without writing an encyclopedic tome as its influence on the house music in france was decisive. since its inception in 1992, david released over a hundred records under his name, tens under various pseudonyms, mainly on vinyls on the most renowned labels like 2020vision, ovum, systematic, pokerflat, f communication, under the counter, stickman, crosstown rebels, the end, etc .. (the list is long, see discogs.com to be convinced) and as many remixes for some of the greatest artists (think moby, dj sneak, gemini, dj hell, llorca, telex, random factor, johnny fiasco, paul johnson, jori hulkkonen, ralph lawson, random factor, kenny hawkes or mr.c). founder of the label brique rouge and a whole galaxy of other labels, he participated in the creation of internationally recognized labels such as robsoul with phil weeks, freak n chic with dan ghenacia (from apollonia) or rz muzik. at a time when david had federated online the cream of the house producers via a forum (far and long before social networks), ivan smagghe had nicknamed him -the producer of the producers.- , a true house music activist, but most of all david duriez is a devastating dancefloor dj, he did several tours around the world and played in some of the biggest clubs in the world between 1995 and 2010. truly one of the most important players in the french electro scene, david is back on tracks after a few years hyatus. but don t call it a comeback because he has never really gone awol, he has been watching the scene and now he s back in the studio. you can expect a (very) long serie of releases for 2016, you have been warned!

flore delivers her first ep for polaar, both the starting point for the label and a defining moment of her ritual live show where she questions the visceral relationship between art and the holy throughout history.

the second of this year’s smd singles on their own delicacies label is features another two original tracks, leading with the hypnotic, late night techno loping of “remember in reverse”, drenched in glistening synths. the second track, “soft attack” takes a much more direct approach, with a brash battering of crash cymbals on every 4th bar marking time as a sinuous synth melody curls around the rhythmatic trunk. “soft attack (drum version)” pares it down even further, excising the melody for a minimal dj tool. also included here is a remix of ‘remember in reverse” from 90s mid west techno legend, dj hyperactive, who we’re super excited to have on this release. he extensive 11 minute rework transforms the track, sprinkling it with subtle doses of acid. after a short hiatus following their modular-only, desert recorded last album “whorl”, during which smd s james ford found himself on production duties for everyone and their dog, smd are back with bunch of techno cuts on their own delicacies label. over a couple of months in jas shaw s newly re-located synth-dense studio in leafy kent, which saw smd once again experiment with live jams as the basis for their production, they’ve pulled together a selection of eight tracks for release as a series of four singles over the coming months. smd fans will note that the earlier naming convention of delicacies has fallen by the wayside – for the simple reason that we’ve pretty much run out of weird and wonderful food stuffs to steal names from. instead, a semi-random automated process has been used to create the track names.

hidhawk is the musical alter ego of haydeé jiménez. the mexican-based artist and cultural entrepreneur is running a busy life organizing events and cultural projects alongside the border of mexico and the us. during the night, bedtime stories like alpagain evolve from the field recordings she is collecting on her various journeys. alpagain consists of recordings from istanbul, tijuana, berlin and salzburg, featuring sounds of alpine instruments such as the alphorn, ocarina and hammered dulcimer (hackbrett). the 15 minutes track is brought to the club context on the b-side of the record with a driving remix by gerald peklar and a dub retreatment by analog solutions mastermind eduardo de la calle.

billy nasty’s electrix records launches its 2016 schedule by welcoming back the always impressive, carl finlow. carl is one of dance music’s leading lights and a multi-talented producer across a range of genres, with releases stretching back to the early 90s. well known for the 2020 vision label he launched with ralph lawson, his solo work however has often taken an electro route with releases under various guises like random factor, black labs, voice stealer, silicon scally and scarletron (with daz quayle) on labels including warp, fuel, playhouse, paper, trope, sony, klang, arista, soma, scsi, pagan, minifunk, seventh sign and satamile. it’s been almost 3 years since carl appeared on electrix. his ‘boot loop ep’ became the label’s second release after its re-launch in 2013. but it’s definitely been worth the wait. his ‘electricology 4 ep’ once again shows why he’s a master of the genre. from the tough and funked-up ‘lateral thoughts’, speckled and melodic ‘hyperloop’, squelching, bassy ‘suspect reanimation’ and sinister, beat-driven ‘latext’, right through to the playful ‘atomic level’ (a bonus track for the digital release), the ep shines, with a stamp of high quality running though its core.

a1 nubian mindz - deep in raves: well known for his versatile and rich production, colin delivers once more. with a quite suitable name - deep in raves is just that. a deep plunge into dark and rave-like atmosphere. after a short intro layered with an ominous voice, massive bassline takes over and drives the track through the darkest curves. enriched with short percussions and a synth stab this is quite a stomper best experienced on a good club soundsystem, preferably in the dark. a2 volster - nebula: almost obsessed with audio purity, volster manages to combine new and modern sounds with old-school genre roots. nebula is all about complexity. although it is based on an electro foundations, it s so much more. space filled with an oscillatory synth motion perplexed with smooth pads that gives the impression of an interstellar properties. no detail is left unengaged, from the 808 that keeps everything in motion to the subtle amount of panning. this is a beautifully crafted story by a producer who is slowly but steadily growing into one of the best croatian artists. b1 lucretio - dracula: the most famed beard of cadoneghe/italy has pulled another magic gem from his music source. widely known for his relentless tendency to push the analogue spectrum to it s extreme, lucretio surprises once more with his ability to blend simple pieces into an effective sub storm with almost comic like features. dracula is not your conventional tune and it s pretty obvious why as soon as you put the needle on. broke down rhythm is heavily fueled by polished but enormous sub background with sparse and ¥in your face¥ shots. seemingly random notes take a gloomy and powerful form during the break and soon the lurky atmosphere comes into picture. this is truly brilliance in it s full simplicity. if only bram stoker could hear this, he would probably be both stunned and amused! b2 james booth - jxst do it: one of our goals on vakum is to be on a lookout for a new and promising talents. berlin based james booth surely fits the bill. jxst do it is a seriously crafted track with rich rhythmic section wrapped in a steady build up. after the initial break-beat intro sliced in short chunks, subtle 303 bassline takes over and the rhythmic game begins. booth delivers a perfectly timed cuts accompanied by a diverse palette of percussions. this is a perfect piece for those build up moments in the club..

its always been tricky predicting what firecracker recordings will release next, though few would have expected an ep of freestyle, darkside drum machine jazz and percussive drone from berceuse heroique, nous and bedouin regular healing force project. sounding like early 23 skidoo replayed on drum machines and samplers, theres much to admire about the hectic rhythms, foreboding textures and dusty samples at the heart of gravitational lensing. its unclassifiable and completely out there, paranoid, dense and intense, with the fizzing drums, mangled horns and metallic percussion hits of random walks just edging out the experimental jungle-jazz madness of apophenia in the top tracks stakes.

up first is gigolo, a spare and weird house cut with sine waves and random claps, hunched drums and trippy synth lines. it s a unique track made in a unique way and will lead to plenty of freaky dance floor moments, for sure. co. art is a whacked out techno cut with slap-funk claps, blistering and blistered synth lines and a rugged bit of bass underlining it all. the track is cavernous and metallic, empty and distant as if it somehow survived a nuclear blast. on the flip, alzheimer is a slow and gurgling, swampy techno number with broken drums and crawling synths that sound like their batteries have run down. icy, watery melodies eventually rain down, but the track remains resolutely eerie. last of all, fabric is another decaying track with subtle, heavily filtered synths and drums all making for a minimal groove that is barely there.

it is no exaggeration to say that ultrastretch has accumulated an array of outstanding releases and artists since its creation in 2011. one knows that being as renown a representative of the underground music scene as sammy dee is, he can easily sign music from any established artist he would like, the so called ‘big names’, however, when we look at the past seven releases on ultrastretch, the agenda here seems to be another. what has become an apparent and admirable feature of this label/platform and of sammy dee himself is his clear support for new music from young and yet to be discovered talents. it is on that note that ultrastretch 08 brings you romanian artist crihan. hailing from a small town close to cluj, alin crihan moved to bucharest in 2009 to be more in touch with the underground scene and music in the capital as it poses more opportunities for him to grow and develop. from dj’ing in the most various clubs in his home country, his first steps into western europe as a dj came earlier last year at no less than the legendary robert johnson club alongside petre inspirescu in frankfurt. producing under his real name for the past four years, crihan’s release for ultrastretch brings two tracks, setting the listener into two very distinctive paths. the a side, * uelden* is a dance floor oriented track. the first words to come to mind are groove and rhythm, giving the track a somewhat funky feeling overall. the elements have been crafted carefully and therefore appropriately placed just where and when you need them. by simply starting the track with a bass line and shuffling hihats he slowly develops to a journey that not onlyventures further into groove and rhythm but also in mind grabbing harmonies with deep/airy sounding pads giving it a comforting sense of beauty and obscurity. the b side is called a doua dimensiune, literally translated from romanian it means the second dimension. doing justice to the title the track does generate the feeling of being in another dimension. it is a very deep affair into mind-altering soundscapes, very atmospheric and at times dark and obscure. attention to detail is apparent judging by the overlayering of elements featured in this track. a constant rolling base formed of water tapping ambient sounds give way to harmonies made up of strings and random noises on top.

releasing not very often, understand has always kept things in the dark about what is going to happen next. the wait is over and the fifth instalment of the series is named ebandogue and features 3 tracks from dubtil, one of today s best producers in the bucharest underground. ruling side a is opus ebant, an epic masterpiece, driven by a groovy bassline and subtle male choirs. this heavenly atmosphere goes from trippy to driving back and forth making it perfect for a peaktime moment that won’t be forgotten. may also be used in some worship places. debandada and epilogue share side b and besides the producer himself that is almost everything they share. debandada is kind of dark and experimental but full of energy in the same time with weird whispers and evolving hats keeping everything on the move. epilogue has a more positive approach, the general uplifing feeling is spiked ocasionally with a techno resonator and some background synths, and just like that, the random delayed male vocals make it so more interesting.

as with the best techno, the best minimalist records, the best krautrock ventures, this first model alpha lp hints at a weird sense of time, not totally of the past, not totally of the future, not at all of the present. something in between, a time travel machine that can take you on a random journey. listening to those tracks is a bit like making time’s flow stop.

rndm (pronounced *random*) is a new musical group featuring pearl jam bassist jeff ament, singer-songwriter joseph arthur and drummer richard stuverud. in april of this year, joseph arthur joined jeff ament and drummer richard stuverud in montana for a jam session, which would give birth to rndm *acts*. within an hour on that first night in the studio, the trio had bashed into shape an ament song called *what you cant control*. and after four days with longtime pearl jam engineer brett eliason behind the boards, the group had nearly 20 finished tracks, which were eventually whittled down to to 12 for this album. the double vinyl comes in gatefold sleeve and contains a download code.
