i’ll be honest, i had forgotten about samuel jonathan johnson until i heard theo parrish play it recently. i used to spin the lp years ago but my copy got lost or beat. soon as i heard it i made a call and sorted out the 45, just an amazing solid groove on sweet love, you cant help but feel it. the flip reasons, is the other great track from the same columbia lp my music. first time on 45 for both of these, once they are gone that is it. disco essential!

the rawkers ep…more than 10 years after the release of cassius first album, the duet comes out with a 6 tracks project that mustn’t have left a lot of people whove listened to it indifferent. well, if there are two people who appreciated the ep, it is jay-z & kanye west, aka the throne, who sampled the famous i <3 uso on their track why i love you, turning it into an absolute popular anthem. if the former album of the band was a tribute to adolescence, here it is more about the earliest days of ours, as the song les enfants (children) depicts it. to such an extent that the rawkers ep sounds like a gigantic playground, full of joy and happiness. were glad to repress this record and to give you an opportunity to escape through this enchanting opus, before cassius new album is released.

after putting the band on the map with their first ep two years ago, the band feathered sun has grown into a life of its own. the more live sets they have played, the better they have defined their style. they are spearheading a brand of sound healing music abstractly narrative, always poetic, sometimes flirting with darkness but always perfectly produced to carry the audience into their own world. feathered sun are the collaborative experiment of nu, jo.ke, raz ohara, chris schwarzwaelder, iannis ritter and acid pauli johannes laumer. each have active and flourishing solo artist careers, albeit still have time to collaborate with one another. the six-strong collective are a close-knit troupe who are primarily based in berlin and lima, peru. live improvisation is ultimately what brought the feathered sun project to life - they are open about their laidback, impromptu approach and this is apparent throughout this ep. side a was primarily crafted in peru by chris schwarzwaelder and jo.ke with raz ohara’s mesmerising vocals. the end material was then sent to nu in berlin who crafted two tracks out of it. the ‘bulbo’ ep shows a willingness to explore different approaches within the collective and the music showcases their long-standing affiliation. it is a downtempo ep that has immaculate instrumentation, dreamy pads and brooding vocals throughout. this is intertwined with organic sounds and moody atmospheric melodies, gives the release a timeless and emotive ambience.

music is about discourse: it’s about ideas, about the intellectual project. anyone can build a “beat”, but not everybody can produce an interesting argument for it. this implies the idea of romanticism as a notion of tradition and respect for certain rules. romanticism understood as virtuosity in the manipulation of art production tools. virtuosi of their own methodology. certain pedigree of virtuosity is definitely needed…but in many regards it also remains an extremely conventional formalism, which is at the core of every artist. it doesn’t matter if you have to piss around in the subterranean electronic music trenches for over two decades. a true pioneer simply has to live with that sort of dichotomy. here there are two good examples.

basil & rogers is a sleazy, california disco duo made up of heru (dj) johnny basil and body rogers. basil, a multi-instrumentalist, long-time record collector, and energy healer is a man that s been making music for a long time under many different guises and in many different styles. heru avenger (acid/psych rock), non stop (electronic/free jazz), baast (kraut rock/jazz funk), and kandi jones (slut rock) are just a few of his projects, past and present. most of this music has been around for the entirety of the 90 s and 2000 s without being heard because despite basil s outspoken appearance (described by many as looking like iggy pop s twin brother and would never be caught wearing a t-shirt no matter the location) he s very quiet about his musical output. body rogers is also part of the non stop group and is a master of electronics and engineering. on the basil & rogers project the two have made a disco 12- that is influenced by classic-era dance music while still being completely unique and far from conforming. it s crazy, it s sexy, and it s sleazy. tune in .

trolldans once again opens its musical tome of fairy tales, this time featuring the gif-ted sound sculptor edanticonf. in his chapter of the trolldans volume, edanticonf presents us with the three crying fairies. it is a tale in four parts of desire and tears - as every good story should be. the first fairy tells us about a lake in the deep woods where a young princess called tuvstarr once lost her gold heart. no creature of the forest could convince the princess to let it go, and so she stayed there by the black lake until she turned into a beautiful flower. the second fairy tells us how the princess, before she lost her precious necklace, would ride like the wind through the forest on the back a grand elk. the princess loved the thrill and the elk loved the princess. vril steps in and actually lets us hear the noble elks heart racing from both the pace and his devotion to tuvstarr. the third fairy ends endanticonfs beautiful but melancholy tale with a glimmer of hope: by the darkest of lakes, the loveliest flo-wers grow. the end.

ltd nice price --- in 2006 a young unknown david e sugar rocked up at a greco-roman party armed with two nintendo gameboys and a guitar pedal and blew us all away with the ensuing hour of acid. the night was so legendary that he wrote a song about it for our new york soundclash a few weeks later: *oi new york, this is london, oi new york greco-roman soundsystem* … and, quite by accident, the record label was born. a little black round piece of history accompanied by remixes from skream, hot chip, ragga twins and jesse rose.

rustling pillows, irate flamingos, drums thumped feverishly in basements. tweaked cassettes, noisy buses, restless hands tapping dashboard rhythms in thick dusk traffic. found sound, musique concre&#768,,te, stuttering drum loops forged in twilight boredom — hyperedited into ruminative dance collages. pillow by mischa lively (ne&#769,,e barton, blake): 4 songs, 25 minutes, a hybrid of exertion and uplift. pillow marks both the nashville native’s debut for racecar and the denouement of an evolution. once rigidly stuck to notions of how rhythm should be utilized — barton is a trained percussionist — the producer eventually realized the potential in limiting himself to a minimalist diet of new and archived drum loops from which to build songs. studying myriad treatment techniques, barton then executed a vision unmoored to binary ideas about “live” versus “electronic,” blurring lines as he composed with an ear for idm, dub, techno, and ambient music. hence pillow: a vast assemblage of rhythm and sound performed to mirror the spirit of dance records. indeed, the 12” is as ripe for warehouse parties as meditative nights alone, headphones affixed, candles lit, marveling at the mysteries humans conjure with physical limbs. “rhythm is instinctual to me,” barton remarks when asked about his preference for recording analogue patterns versus beats sourced from 1s and 0s. “and i dislike sitting nearly as much as working from computers.” movement, then, is a virtue to barton, and in mischa lively he’s found a taut, elegant, propulsive vehicle in which to explore it.

the prolific producer shows he still has plenty of tricks up his sleeve across all four cuts and stitches in acid, jack and chicago styles with his own sense of charm. the kings comes hard and fast out of the blocks with big hits, wild synths and raved-up vibes that will have you punching the air. knowledge is another banger with powerful kicks and globular bassline run through with more ravey sirens, but this time is a little more haunted. crossing paths is all about a simple but effective bassline that bounces along and takes you with it in ways similar to an omar s joint, then wait is the most stripped back and mysterious of the lot with cosmic melodies panning about in a spacious and airy deep house groove. utterly timeless from start to finish, this is another massively effective offering from innershades.

the third release in this series opens up with fanon flowers remix of be good to me on the a-side, and has everything we love about fanons signature sound, an industrial rave-stomper that provides a heavy 909 beat topped with mercilessly propelling chicago-style claps. the b-side kicks off with henning baers remix of visco space saves the world a super trippy and minimal interpretation of the much more heavy original, which was a raw and gloomy industrial monster with a bold noize overload. its progression changes build up neatly but peak in an epic spiral break down that shatters the soul. b2 is a remastered version of herz aus stahl by the mastermind christian morgenstern himself, presenting an upfront, sinister electrofunk monster that attacks with waves of synth menace straight from its metallic robocop-heart.

ebony goes first with real truth and offers a track that is both punchy and powerful thanks to its raw and thumping drums, but spiritual and serve thanks to the pained and soul infused vocal wails up top. glistening glass pads and over sized hi hats add to the intensity of this classy rave banger. r then serves up focus, eight minutes of freaky and hypnotic techno with creepy voices moving about the space as distorted kicks and droning reverb brings a physical feel. it s intense and dark and then comes colossus, a breakbeat driven track with heavenly pads making for a grand and atmospheric headspace. cosmic signifiers and far off pads add to the serenity of it all and will leave you with both a heavy heart and a stomping foot.

those familiar with the world of dub disco and modern balearica should know all about layne fox, a san francisco-based producer who has released some killer records over the last decade as part of noted collective 40 thieves. the bay area ensemble has been responsible for some killer records, including gems on rong music and leng, who released their expansive debut album the sky is yours back in 2014. now, fox has decided to go it alone for an outing on magic feet that marks his first solo outing since 2005 s move me under the tuffy alias. its something of a gem, too, effortlessly combining many of his familiar influences with nods towards druggy italo-disco and horizontal pop.

is it balearic releases a debut ep from clandestino s joe morris. 4 tracks of lush electronic grooves. the title track golden tides is a mid tempo houser with beautiful pads and soft arpeggios. late afternoon sundowner vibrations. the second track bayou has touches of sueno latino about it, an afterdark evocative tropical house trip. on the flip the first track light of the moon is a more reflective slo mo affair. warm pads and 808 sounds melting into cicadas. finally we come to mpondo theme. sounds of nature kalimba and loose percussion all sit together and watch the sun dip over the savannah horizon. a proper ep this covering all shades.

viva erotica has been a gabba-beat chamber orchestra, a facebook sculpture, a youporn recycling machine and is now becoming a piece of wax (a record). four tracks are furious comments on the downfall of club music - the bassdrum as a weapon against the bassdrum - the other four want to forgive and forget. 2015 was the year of about-face. each of the 330 records has a cutout from a coffee-table book plastered on the front.

in 2013 drumcell debut his first full length album sleep complex on clr. around the time of the album release drumcell invited three of his close label mates luis flores and raíz truncate from droid and lucy from stroboscopic artefacts to create their own interpretations of his music. the unreleased tracks were constant dance floor tracks used within the teams dj sets and its about time to release these tracks to the public!

about a year ago nico stojan and acid pauli met at the studio to record some music. while doing so they discovered their common love for sample based production. so they were basically digging into old vinyls and eventually these three tracks came along. nothing more to say, but enjoy. call of the valley is the first release on the new label ouie: there has been a shift in this tiny piece of massive world and, like all other shifts, they are documented by those who were there. ouie is the label to do just that, created by the people who were there, making those shifts.

virginia steps up with her first full-length on ostgut ton, playfully answering all questions and rhetorics about love, lust and life with her singing on eleven new songs. titled fierce for the night and co-produced by renowned artists dexter, martyn and steffi, the album offers a very personal insight to her inner self while drawing from club culture s long and rich history.

singularis, the talented young beat-wrangler from the netherlands, first appeared on the cold busted label at the age of 16 with his impressive debut album evening hours. since then hes grown both as a producer and in age, now unveiling what a time, his third fulllength for the prestigious downtempo imprint.

last year saw the mysterious garage shelter make their debut appearance on skylax, and little is still known about them! all we know is they are back with some freshness on the skylax classic sublabel. first up is bring back love, a track that will sink its claws in with that infectious vocal sample hook. sticking with the old school sample vibe is the lonely heart dub of attempt, it’s a bit more mellow but still has plenty of groove in it. friend of the garage shelter, dj la foudre, appears over on the b side with it’s alright (signal st mix). still on that catchy sample tip, it features one of the grooviest bassline and funky guitar pairings i’ve heard in a long time. next up, perception 66 is a smooth house affair from yet another friend, asa no hikari. rounding out the package is garage shelter’s own you (still), a dreamy pad-driven track that may indeed be the pick of the release. while we don’t know much about garage shelter, we can’t help but look forward to what they come out with next!

koehler returns to berceuse heroique with his third release for the label. contra blood invokes the spirit of early no u turn records, infusing some techno dynamics, creating a very interesting anthem for people who don’t care about boundaries in dance music. flammarion breach combines his classic ‘ardcore techno sound with a repetitive arpeggio that recalls the tension of some of the best film scores by john carpenter. with rotating rupees, koehler delivers another beautiful ambient tune and this time its his ode to zelda.
