hailing from buenos aires, sebastian galante a.k.a. seph is one of argentina’s main electronic music artists. with nearly 10 years of activity in the techno scene, he has established himself as a multi-fac- eted artist, dividing his time between roles such as an energetic, prolific producer, heavily requested remixer, aula magna records label manager, and a live act which has driven him to perform all across the globe. a sound experimentalist at heart, he devotes himself into expanding the sonic experience on the dance-floor and in the mind.

since jim coles took on the mantle of om unit, the english producer has sought to challenge himself and his audience by going beyond the confines of genres and styles he has so far explored. in the process he has found success by striving for more feeling, for a more human and daring electronic music. this journey continues with ‘self’, coles’ third album as om unit and a true follow-up to his 2013 debut ‘threads’.

following excellent releases from skatebard, les crocodiles and lunar concept amongst many others, pleasure unit turn to cut the rug crew member mike misiu for their latest instalment of cool-headed modern disco. do what you need sports a metro area demeanour, with a classic vocal hook sprinkled in at opportune moments for maximum impact. the dub mix is no less satisfying, even with the famous sample rubbed out, but in fact the real pleasant surprise of this release is b2 jam love talk. with its funky midtempo 90s breakbeat and heavy-hitting piano, it s an addictive party starter that harks back to the acid jazz days while still fitting right into the here and now.

paul blackford returns to cpu this time donning a 7inch downtempo tip. light years vinyl takes 2 of the highlights from the accompanying lp, all of which demonstrate his versatility in expressing his hip hop and funk influences from an electronic music perspective. on first pass you might think you are listening to nightmares on wax, but without the heavy sampling as blackford favours creating his sounds from scratch. comparisons to photeks hidden camera can be made in terms of atmosphere but keeping things within a slower trip hop framework. light years is for chilling out, but theres a strong temptation to mix hip-hop vocals over the top due to the lps solid instrumental foundations.

one third of london modular alliance and sought after electro artist pip williams (aka phil ventre) graces cpu with some acid drenched electro-funk. over driven 808 percussion and 303 basslines slice through this ep with searing accuracy creating a highly effective dj weapon. ventre’s jedi like synthesis skills are inspiring, with sublime sculpted leads and sci-fi bleeps rhythmically scattered throughout, all 4 tracks give you an insight into his synchronised sub-oscillating mind.

basic soul unit returns with another deadly ep on dolly, further investigating the thin dividing line between techno and broken beats. a-side wallow is a menacing big room stormer with a delicate pad breakdown, with voiski providing an alternate more driving techno version of it with a splendid melodic twist midway through the track. radiate and joyride on the b both have bsus signature rhythmic ideas and fresh energy with radiate even going full-on broken rave! joyride is that upbeat funky techno nugget thats going to sit in your dj bag forever.

noumen - white silence we first spotted noumen in 2012 and alongside cygnus was one of the first to be asked to join cpu. over 4 years later he finally delivers an ep and lp that is a true labour of love. abstract electronics of the highest quality. it s idm, but with that essential hip hop influence making it immeasurably more addictive and pleasing. with plenty of melody and swing layered over intricate rhythm programming, it leaves listeners stunned. white silence is taken from the forthcoming album apeiron. remaining 3 tracks are exclusive to this ep.

over the years jim coles has turned his hand to a fair few different styles and made them his own. these days, most know his om unit alias as a significant force in fresh developments within d&b (recently found larking about with alix perez, binga and more in the richie brains project on exit records), but it s not always been that way.

after a bit of a hiatus, expansion unit is finally back with another slice of moody and brooding electro trickery. courtesy of berlin-based pascal hetzel, the two tracks * extra terra* and * fermi paradox* showcase raw and rugged machine funk with a strong wide-eyed escapist undercurrent. the future is now.

new band name, new lp, the former max graef band toured and worked on new music all year. musical progress, and the impression of not enough edge and rawness in a lot of recent music, inspired and motivated a majority of the recording. the band has grown as a unit and wrote a lot of material together this year in late night sessions. during 2 weeks of recording the new songs in the studio the goal was to try all sorts of instruments, amps and effects and be open to any combination of sounds. furthermore, they and engineer lutz fahrenkrog-petersen tried to capture and maintain the raw feeling of the live recordings using almost exclusively analog pedals and racks as well as keeping the editing of the recordings to a minimum. although bands like et cetera (wolfgang dauner), embryo or xhol have heavily infuenced max graef and his band, the result turned out very original ranging from distorted jazz-rock to experimental soul, electronic percussion workouts to free sound experiments and psychedelic rock. with some tracks being around 14 minutes long, it is better to let the music speak for itself though.
