in 2007, renowned french producer julien jabre tracked down the american gospel singer phyliss mckoy joubert on myspace. joubert was already a cult figure for house aficionados thanks to -stand on the word-, a song she wrote and performed with her -celestial choir- in 1982 that became a staple of the club scene in new york. it resurfaced as a mysterious bootleg in 2000. julien, who d fallen in love with the song, was eager to remix and officialy rerelease it. when he finally reached out to phyliss, she explained the multitrack tape had been lost. the only thing to do was rerecording it-along with 10 other tracks. today on french label elias, julien and the joubert singers are releasing -stand on the word- in its original and unique 1982 version (mistakenly named after larry levan) and 3 brand new mixes including a fresh dimitri from paris remix. that s how the good lord works!

“change the state of motion” sees fundamental interaction deliver 3 original tracks, “inertia”, “ruination” and “angular momentum”, and the ep is rounded off with a blistering remix of “inertia” by binny.
“inertia” is a track designed for the floor, with a tough, hypnotic synth line that gathers pace as the track progresses. binnys remix deconstructs the elements of the original, turning it into a more pounding, jacking affair.
“ruination” takes things deeper, the main synth filters in and out, with lush atmospheres and dubbed out percussion helping the track along. “angular momentum” takes things on a trippier route, a swinging synth line helped along with pulsating claps and powerful stabs.

gelert takes a short journey from nant peris up to the peak that is elidir fawr. we don’t know a great deal about elidir but elidir was a giant of a man. the 4th highest peak of the 3000’s is set at 3029ft (923m) - 3000.4 delivers more nippiness with luv*jam inviting tropical heat master damian schwartz, and new nipster jack beavers to the team. plus bob is on hand again as a consistent member of the rucksack club. join the rucksack club and collect all 14 peaks along the way, keeping an eye out for the secret peaks beyond. thanks to andrew devine @ysju.

crimes of the future rounds off the year in fine style with an absolutely essential ep from twins. 3 moody us house cuts straught out of atlanta and a sublime deep remix from label boss scott fraser. opening up with cause of dissociation, a slice of banging chicago house that would not have been out of place in the hands of mike dunn at the warehouse. rattling drums amd percussion a cut up vocal and a killer bassline make for dancefloor devastation. next up -you take too- takes things a little deeper, maintining the groove with chicago inspired percussion and filtered drums and stabbing synths grooving the track along. over on side b scott fraser takes -you take too- on to 5am on a dark smoke filled dancefloor, with a deep bassline and soaring strings. adding additional percussion, keys and swirling echoes... could be the sound of a lost nu groove classic. finally things close out with -a way from now- with more chicago inspired goodness with a funky bassline, pumping percussion and eerie ethereal keys rounding the ep off in fine style.

about a year ago nico stojan and acid pauli met at the studio to record some music. while doing so they discovered their common love for sample based production. so they were basically digging into old vinyls and eventually these three tracks came along. nothing more to say, but enjoy. call of the valley is the first release on the new label ouie: there has been a shift in this tiny piece of massive world and, like all other shifts, they are documented by those who were there. ouie is the label to do just that, created by the people who were there, making those shifts.

composer kate simko, along with her all-female london-based string ensemble london electronic orchestra, release their highly anticipated album. kate simko has composed tracks that subtly blend her training as a classical pianist with her passion for electronic music. the result is an inimitable mix of sonorous strings and instruments melting with synthesizers and loose grooved beats, taking classical music to an innovative level. musical worlds collide, with a rework of schubert, egyptian and eastern melodies, rainforest samples, philip glass-inspired minimalism and classic 808 electronic drums. the album includes reworks of the xx and parra for cuva, as well as collaborations with prominent uk house dj jamie jones and pop singer katy b.

benales opens the e.p. with radiate, a track where you can clearly hear his influences of the american school of 90s minimal techno. long time dj but new on the production side, this is benales first effort on vinyl. after his initial masterpiece on knotweed records (kw006) and a handful of releases on demented (hiss 1992) and krill, opuswerk is back on knotweed with displacement, a trippy, hard hitting, analogic techno attack: no concession on this one! gonzalo md has already delivered the goods on both knotweed (kw004 and kw011) and decision making theory (dmt 006), as well as a fantastic ep recently on extrasolar. here, with sharp oscillation, he keeps developing his unique style, producing a highly percussive, almost samba-like, piece of techno. label owner philippe petit closes the e.p. with indian summer, a track moving along a warm bassline, bearing some recognisable krautrock influences.

dense lp of fogged samples and who knows what. records like this don’t come along very often, it’s a weird ol ride. self released business from the man himself.

continuing a sublime run of form for the label, the fourth outing on the lopasura imprint, is yet another classy trio of heady, analogue machine laden masterpieces. opening up with “out of the fog’, the familiar acidic arpeggio and crisp hits we’ve grown to love from benedikt frey, dance unwittingly along before being opened up by long, cinematic pads drenching the track with an emotion and grandeur so synonymous with his music. complimenting the a side, the looming intent ‘wolves’ adopts from the off evolves quickly into a driving, hypnotic and beautifully crafted piece that’s a true heads down, eyes-shut techno battle weapon. rounding off the ep on the b side is the exceptional ‘lights’. an unsettling, caliginous whir of industrial drones balances the tribal, percussive elements almost depicting a lost ship crashing over the swells of the ocean as it clings on to futile hope of finding the lighthouse. it meanders and threatens before an incredible synth hook ebbs in and takes over momentarily, before calmly simmering as the storm passes. never before has love pain sunshine and rain been more perfectly encompassed.

as the d edge label clocks up release number 24, it turns to the phil hinter ensemble for a fantastic three track package that is filled with fresh house vibes. phil hinter ensemble is a joint project by phil s main pillars philogresz and german simon hinter. they have ties with labels like their own phil, love unlimited vibes and of course d-edge. previous eps have gone down well around the world and simon hinter s smart grooves and sample based fill-ins blends with the wombastic bass and shivering synth lines of philogresz perfectly. up first is the owl, a squelchy, synthetic house track with lively drums and chords and magical trumpets all making for a party starting track. it is perfectly arranged and expertly musical, unlike much of today s plastic and sample heavy sounds. in the air then gets even more playful with glossy synth stabs, rumbling bass and diva vocals all bouncing along in a charismatic style that is full of colour. struggle then gets intimate and final with scurrying little percussive sounds, burst of afro vocal, down low sine waves and icy snares all making for a perfectly seductive minimal techno brew

jean nipon most recently known for his standout productions on parisien label clekclek boom joins the l.i.e.s. stable with a new three track ep. the a-side sees nipon go straight for the throat with a chicago-esce muted-synth beating drum track, not unlike early poindexter or ricky smith productions- it is effective, dj ready, and geared for the club. the two track b-side takes a more mellow and dusty approach- without losing his sense of rhythm engaging drum programming push along tape warbled melodies as the tracks expand and release, balancing out and letting this ep breathe perfectly.

repress , amadeus sees its catalog graced yet again by new zealand outfit chaos in the cbd. the kiwi brothers, birthed ben & louis helliker-hales, are no new faces to the label, or the wide variety of genre-bending acronyms they encompass. having recently relocated from tropical auckland to damp london earlier this year, the two take their productions along with them in their latest efforts, 816 to nunhead. title track and aside, 816 to nunhead, is tinged with whats left of summer. a nostalgic tune built for the sun and soaked in funk. its a track reminiscent of early french disco, almost as if built for the two robots themselves...

over the last 12 years, kel mckeown, or kelpe, has carved himself a unique perch in the uk s electronic underground. across several full-lengths, eps and remix projects, his misfit electronica has managed to cohere a staggeringly deep spectrum of influence along the way. a natural son and heir to generation warp and the fathers of krautrock, his pioneering experiments in the early 00s also positioned him as one of many stylistic precursors to the arrival of la s now-sprawling beat scene. much like scene-savants prefuse 73 and dimlite, kelpe has remained an enormously respected stalwart of the fringes, always dabbling variously in sampleheavy beat-craft, oddball ambient, and more recently dancefloor-ready club grub.

after life recorders 90 state release, argumento strikes back with the 9th argument ep, a various artist record showcasing an uncompromising techno, carrying the new fresh sounding grooves with traces from the past. peter sliwinski aka echoplex does not need any introduction. more than 2 decades present on the scene with numerous classic works on his label soleil and other platforms like synewave, end to end, imf, he always represents the detroit sentiment spiced with pounding grooves along the way. this time is also not different with his opening track of the ep called recovered.

the australian dj, producer and musician jad lee likes to have several irons in the fire all at the same time. for instance hes a member of mitzi (along charles murdoch and dominiqe bird), one half of the pan-pacific indiepop duo twiggy lashes and a solo artist known as jad & the ladyboy. under this moniker he releases music which can be described as soulful house with plenty of disco influences. for never come back down jad had singer mark borgazzi in his studio to cut a precious, groovy two-stepper into a genuine pop diamond. in order not to get only radio airplay, but also to be played out in gloomy underground clubs with extra fat subwoofers yannick provides his homicidal sexfactmix. with its untamed bassline and a milling-machine like synthesizer this feels like an unchecked punch to the gut. there will be blood on the dancefloor!

the maghreban is new to house music, and doesnt really listen to house music, which isnt necessarily a bad thing. he has worked extensively in other genres under other names. looking at house from these sideways perspectives perhaps gives him an interesting angle on it. this second release sees the maghreban expand his sonic palette somewhat, taking in some african sounds but also continuing along the vintage theme of his first 12 inch. radio play from benji b (bbcr1), thristian (nts), support from ben ufo (rinse/hessle), brian not brian (going good/kristina records), gatto fritto (international feel), sasa (in flagranti, nts), leri ahel (mutant disco).
