berliner martin dawson and polish duo catz n dogz join forces to bring us this fierce three track ep entitled no nights. the first track on this release is no nights. brimming with warm pads and an accusing, dark lo-fi synth line this version has a deep vibe to it and the ability to really get under ones skin. following this the berlin-polish team hit us with no nights (beatz mix) a catchy tech-house number with a lo-fi synth line sporadically accompanied by a melodically decending dubby synth. combined with the crisp vocal line this makes for a very promising track. no days, the last track on this release gets straight to business with distorted vocals and a menacing bassline that intertwine throughout the track. varying rhythmical flourishes keep it interesting, while tripped out synthesized sounds guarantee to get any dancefloor grooving. we couldnt be more pleased with the results of this tenacious trio and we look to the future in hope that they are already planning further collaborations.

we are happy to welcome a new artist into our family. young jose pouj is one of the new emerging talents from the spanish techno scene. his speciality is hard edged techno, but with a touch of class. a sound carefully crafted and skilfully developed. his blood poisoning ep starts with waken, a scientific techno number with a solid rhythm arrangement, fat basses and sharp synth workout, a funky electronic steamroller designed for body and mind. the b side opens with sepsis, a harder approach to modern techno with a strong drum programming, sweeping drones, an arpeggiated bassline and a bunch of bleeps that appear and disappear throughout the arrangement. an anabolic track that slowly goes to a mental break and turns once more to madness. the release closes with organic return, where the main course is made up of carefully programmed synthetic drums, till an emb-flavoured bassline comes into the track, reminding us of the good old pulsinger style. summing up, this is the work of a great young producer that injects new blood into our label. watch out for forthcoming adventures of this new talent.

part i? time track . mokiras time track is the deepest of dub music and electronic gear has seldom sounded this organic. rolling cords and bassline builds slowly towards the dub meltdown. on the b-side silent servant (sandwell district, historia y violencia) produces a rolling wall of sound. this is a high energy, metallic sounding dance piece ready to serve djs around the globe. to be played loud, not silent.

never losing the musics immediate physicalness out of sight, the driving, bass-heavy energy of alex picones tracks set club floors on fire. still in his twenties, hes been a dj for fifteen years. having never aimed at quick fame, his career is exemplary in its endurance and commitment: he hosted parties in his hometown of padua and became resident at seminal italian clubs. after a stopover on ibiza he now resides in berlin. alex picones first record under his real name is also his first release on cadenza and his most successful so far. the three tracks of fahrenheit tie in with the overboiling force of floppy and furby. while the rattling snaredrum adds a humorous touch, the uplifting groove of inside out pushes on the limits of the energy levels of contemporary house music. yet the heart of the track is the relentless bassline, which liquefy ones body and melds the crowd and the whole club in one torrential stream of tension. with lost in burning man, alex picone fuses an oldschool electro groove in his house beats. this unexpected encounter might remind one of kevin saundersons hiphouse sound. but instead of indulging in nostalgia, the breakbeats add a provoking, startling touch to the track. with the rotary bassline and the playful jaws harp of mandarin, the ep ends on a comical note. alex picones second cadenza is a challenge to a certain house sound that became too accommodating and glossy. his musics driving force pushes the crowd beyond the threshold of the established into a space of limitless indulgence

summer has come early. the fog is literally lifting and willing the summer to come early with this excellent ep for metroline. lead track diggler’s job is a breezy house number with pimping keys and a beautiful bass bounce. there’s plenty of movement in the percussion and a light touch that just begs for summer to come. shout romance is a shade tougher with its up-front kicks and acid-tinged bassline. it has slow burn intensity that is nicely counterbalanced by smooth reverb-soaked vintage synths.the jackspot remix of shout romance really brings out the funk in those synths, underpinning that with down-the line percussion and skittering hats that give the track a real drive. rounding things up nicely is in the right mood. the track’s bassline is sticky, sweet treacle over which congas and vocal cuts are expertly sprinkled to create a tasty treat. it never gets sickly though… horns are deployed sparingly, and the track has the same cool as a cucumber minimalism that makes this ep pure pleasure on the eardrums

paul hughes and aruba teaming up for this latest offering from siesta music. >these days< is a lush late night groover, combining a rich bassline with a drifting vocal stab, tight beats, and dubby chords for some quality deep house. aruba adds a little old skool flavor to his >those drumz mix< via new analog synth lines and a new bassline, while the beats, now more of a tribal rhythm, still keep the floor crowds moving. the >those nights mix< will throw you all off, with the track slowed to a crawling skank with a deep bassline and recliner beats pitting wits with a slowed down take of the vocal.

luv jam - better known as andy cole - made his name through outings on we play house and lany recordings, and >mature oak< finds him in fine form, an epic, atmospheric track poised on a bed of analog synths and warm pads, driven by galloping drum mechanics that gradually give way to its climax, an irresistibly squelchy acid bassline that marks it as one of coles most memorable productions to date. on the flipside we get treated to cottams first ever remix. cottam has made an impeccable name for himself, with his signature colourful series of untitled 12s and a contribution to the story imprint. true to his roots, cottams re-rub of >mature oak< is a slo-mo, motorik chugger that makes excellent use of the originals acid line while taking the whole track a step further. its a proper heads down affair that begs for a soundsystem loud enough to do it justice. limited vinyl pressing of 444 copies – hand stamped and numbered. special artwork by pedro carvalho de almeida.

akiko kiyamas latest release features four tracks of intricate drum programming, bringing her characteristic warmth to the groove with their ghostly whispered vocal samples and the clicking and clanking poly-rhythmic sound made famous by the legendary berlin imprint, perlon. the first track, carnival, brings all the fun of the fair, a swirl of coloured lights barely glimpsed amongst the heaving throngs of somewhere like bar 25, followed on by an abstract slow burner which sneaks up on you with its sneezed vocal snippets and jangling bassline. talon, a real dancefloor creeper, clips along insistently and the final track, with its bass-guitar and pulsing synth line rounds of the record in perfect ethereal fashion. as akiko puts it herself, >deepness, depression, beauty, irony, fun - these are keywords for my music also my life itself<. you can definitely feel that there is much more thought put into these productions than just purely the need to move people on the dancefloor.

one of the highlights from the recent nightstarter 8 compilation – on my mind gets a remix treatment from the hottest trio of club cowboys right now. roberto rodriguez digs out his 909 out of the closet and works out a mid 90s inspired slammer, not far away from the golden times of strictly rhythm. added sample vox and the shuffled drums drives this up to the max before dropping some serious organ madness into the game. sure fire floor burner. for the vocal shy, we have included the dub as well. mano le tough brings us some of his trademark balearic deep techno which we just love to play! damn fine arrangement coupled with soothing melodies and a churner of a bassline makes this one of his finest remixes – we are happy to welcome mano on moodmusic for his first, but definitely not last guest appearance.

produced in 2004, this ep marks an essential shift in the production of stefan goldmann to his modus operandi as a dedicated innovator. he had adapted the barricade guise to induce some serious deviations into the techno realm. yet, heads werent ready and he simply continued under his real name with his major breakthrough works: perlons blood ep and the legendary sleepy hollow tune. hidden from the public, aleko and frantic had built a prototypic aesthetic of rough, concrete-space sounds - reduced dark, metallic percussion grooves, spring reverbs and degraded post-acidic synths. you name it where you heard this sound years later. its revealing how far ahead these tunes were at the time of their creation. they sound more now than many current tracks. aleko is the 4/4 techno version of this soundset, locked-in clonk patterns built around a nitrous bassline. frantic could be a future development to todays dubstep, if it wasnt its actual historic predecessor. add the schizophrenic bass excursion heliotrope and you have a package of painstaking relevance. back then the a&rs simply didnt get it - thats why it took 6 years and the formation of victoriaville to finally bring these gems to light

matthew styles remixes one of fofs biggest releases of 2010. never straying far from the source material, matthew wraps things up in his usual tight production style, employing a live bass sound and elements of the original melody to give things a tripppier edge than the originals straight up dance floor leanings.
on the flip and walking that fine line between house and techno, blm turns in a very fine and contemporary remix of drake and griifiths >the devils eyes<. dystopian in its outlook, the remix drives along with a simple but full bassline with plenty of dancefloor power.

echolettes second release manzanillo 002, follows up with a similar tropical -journey feeling- as felt on echolettes first release, perhaps setting the style for this excellent new label. whereas before it was pygmys and bongos, this time manzanillo has a distinctly more mexican, if not aztec vibe. the original mix kicks off with steady galloping horse like drums and percussion, which is suddenly met by a lovely melodic bassline, which again is doubled up with what sounds like a xylophone. just as your wondering where its all going, a wicked little riff with delayed minimal vocal slices enter the mix keeping the groove going on and on forever and ever... another brilliant and quality piece of music from jackie misfit

there are few artists making seriously great music while not taking themselves too seriously: that difficult feat is one rarely attempted and even less often successfully carried out. benoit & sergio have seemingly effortlessly managed to pull off that contradictory trick, producing songs that sometimes seem like musical open letters: editorials narrated in the voices of unidentified, yet totally recognizable colorful characters, read aloud against a backdrop of beautifully lush, warm and sensuous electronic pop music. the unexpected juxtaposition of such pristine production and playful lyricism — first exhibited on 2009s highly praised <i>what ive lost</i> ep, which included the brilliantly sardonic single >full grown man< – exemplifies why benoit & sergio are one of the most unique and interesting outfits in dance music. its good news, then, that the washington, d.c./berlin-based outfits eagerly expected dfa debut maintains both the charm and expert craftsmanship of its predecessors. single >boy trouble< (the titular counterpoint to >full grown man<) launches the ep with all manner of reasons to take to the dancefloor: an exigent beat, a beckoning synthline, a bassline of understated funk. sergio lethargically sings about girls, making note of both their ups and the downsides, without the hindrance of subtlety. >i love girls/with legs like a ferrari< he states before noting (bemoaning?) the fact that >you need poetry to turn these girls on.< its a song for the best part of the night, full of compulsive rhythms and a climax that builds on sparkly synths. the accompanying remix from visionquest — the detroit-bred, berlin-based label led by producers seth troxler, ryan crosson, lee curtiss and shaun reeves — amps things up, making the beat a more prominent, driving and club banging force. the flipside features >full grown man< and >what ive lost<, which reveal themselves to be worth more than a few revisits.

the latest addition to the ostgut roster, detroits ryan elliott, is a recognised force on the international dj circuit - yet his productions are few and far between. now re-located in berlin, the new berghain resident contributed his track >abatis< to the >fünf< anniversary compilation, setting the tone with dark and brooding techno undercurrents. these two new tracks bring ryans production skills to the fore, both slow burning and refined recordings that show off his love for bassline-led, straight forward club tools.

round two on plumbum! on the a and with an acute attention for detail, piemont present us with involved. a rolling march through the wild. with bird noise, the scything roar of a gorilla and a weighty bassline. we are drawn through the undergrowth, with the delightful organ drops invoking memories of classic kong and tarzan movies. on the flip the duo get there fidget on. a growling bassline, sci-fi bleeps and moody synth waves, make for a solid tech number.

london grime producer swindle follows up his incredible planet mu ep with another slab of funked-up grime, this time for a rapidly expanding rwina records. swindles return marks a slightly stripped-down sound: the funk is meaner, heavier, and nastier. >playground< grooves on rainbow synths and leisurely, drawn-out melodies, as a boogie bassline carves memorable phrases in the ground below. all of this is shoved in an approachable halfstep template that means the track could just as easily slot into any dubstep set as the grime scene in which swindle dominates. did we mention theres a killer freestyling organ solo in the breakdown?

after the real thing ep, arthur pochon a.k.a art bleek is coming back on sharivari with four deep and funky tracks. from alright and its straight and dynamic bassline, to the broken style beats of deep hop, full of percussions and jazzy grooves, and closing the ep with the wild and hypnotising hi-hats of traces & dust, the immigrant ep proves that the parisian producer is still one of the ambassadors of the french deep techno scene.
