22.02.85 is the new album from bastien keb. initially conceived as a concept album about a stripper lost in the city (like a straight-to-video follow up to showgirls), 22.02.85 has a distinctly nocturnal edge to it. the city at night, lost in a crowd, abandoned petrol stations, empty kebab shops, broken florescent lights. like a half-forgotten dream, familiar yet unnerving. he says all the songs are all about girls apart from two about a big lug. you may catch a phrase here and there but the context is all in the feel: there s a melancholy edge, but i don t wanna depress people. sad but hopeful? if that s possible.

a bona-fide nigerian prince and probably the only musician to have ever played with fela kuti, miles davis and bob marley, eji oyewole combined african highlife with western jazz to create a hybrid so that was as smooth as it was funky. his first album, charity begins at home was an angry tirade against corruption in nigeria. me & you is his ‘relationship’ album, a brighter and happier set of songs that sees eji all loved up, presumably with the mysterious ‘cameleon’ featured on the cover. eji’s flute is no longer a strident voice raised in anger. instead, on ‘me & you’ and ‘i’m a dancer’ it is a playful line of seduction. on the wonky and woozy ‘eniafelamo’ his sax is a post-coital salutation. even the one political track, ‘long live nigeria’, is a loved up call for peace, progress and trust. chilled, assured and dexterious, me & you is a sophisticated showcase of eji oyewole’s chops. ‘this is the beginning of an atomic musical evolution,’ he declares on the cover. ‘brothers and sisters, stay cool.’

public releases hits the lab for some aural alchemy and to turn out its first release of 2017. a four-tracker from moscow’s phil gerus, scenes—or, in the producer’s native russian, &#1089,&#1094,&#1077,&#1085,&#1099,—manages to have a makeup that’s both peculiar and magnetic. the title’s a fitting one, every track feels like a vignette in a collection of short stories. separately, they’re self-contained, but a rich narrative arch is added when they’re sewn together. if there is a theme here, it’s of viewing the future through the dusty lens of the past, and each of the songs explores this in its own fashion. the kick-off, “ohashi sky garden,” starts as a hyped-up italo space epic, pumped full of swirling synth licks and sharp, tight drums, but it mutates into something completely its own when vocal samples (90s r&b?) and warm keys (prog rock rhodes?) enter. after the original’s brisk five minutes, the legendary richard sen—graffiti guy, breaks guy, house guy, disco guy, half-of-padded-cell guy—steps in to give it a trance-y tinge while doubling its runtime and adding a dancefloor-destroying hi-nrg coloration. the b begins with “naha swim,” a crunchy funk foot-stomper that might as well be an unreleased idjut boys or ray mang ditty dug up from the noid catacombs. fiery and furious, yet utterly cheeky. serving as a sort of coda to “naha” is “kiss of a kind,” a gerus take on 80s adult contemporary, replete with sleazy sax and sensual pads. a gentle nightcap to a zigzagging, antic 12-inch

nyc-based duo jasmine golestaneh and eddie cooper write songs through a telepathic kinship thevve developed since they started making music together. we have these sort of unspoken criteria when we re writing music. we never really need to explain what that is but we both know when it s missing or when we ve hit it. the pair, aka tempers, are set to release their fundamental fantasy ep via the vinyl factory on 24th february. creating an emotional and tonal tension of sensual and mechanical impulses, their brand of dark electronica sets haunting song writing to a sinister disco beat, pop melodies floating in an almost industrial soundscape. it follows the bands 2015 debut full-length services. fundamental fantasy is about exploring the creative scenery of romantic illusions. our need for them, how we justify them to ourselves, that moment when the imagined story line collides with reality. the ways we fictionalize people to fit into the narratives we have about love - to reflect our own beliefs, virtues and flaws. it is about celebrating fantasies swelling and getting undone, so we can pick up the pieces and craft new ones that serve us better tempers musically, fundamental fantasy is an evolution in both song writing and process, while still tracing a clear line to their earlier output. many of the eps melodies were born of live improvisation, which helped them create an instinctive, natural immediacy within their electronic arrangements. the cover of the ep depicts the duo on the volcanic island of stromboli, where they performed at the volcano extravaganza, an art and music festival curated by the vinyl factory.it is a perfect landscape to mirror the mood of ‘fundamental fantasy. a seemingly idyllic place that is isolated from the outside world.

in the last two years, paul régimbeau had put his most personal and earliest musical project mondkopf in stand-by mode. the rich arrangement work that defined his sound wasn’t fitting his desire of simplistic intensity anymore. his different collaborations (autrenoir, violent magic orchestra with vampilla & pete swanson, foudre!, oiseaux-tempêtes) forced him to explore new aspects of playing electronic music like a regular band member. the young producer was experimenting being a musician and embracing the experience. but after a year without composing, things changed on the tragic night of november 13th.
on this very night, the parisian set up machines he had acquired in the last few months and started improvising what became the first song on his new album: “they fall, but you don’t”. since that moment, paul regularly spent nights experimenting and recording what he felt at the time. while previous records reflected months of fine-tuning, these songs represent the mood of one evening, one night, the ones when you surrender yourself to the melancholy of the moment. much like a diary, the album is a compilation of these moments that escape reality in a chaotic and dark year.

it’s the forgotten place. lying between the mountains of northwest tunisia and the algerian border, the bargou valley and the village named after it lie isolated, away from the world. it’s poor, barren country, but standing apart, bargou has developed its own culture that had never been documented until nidhal yahyaoui began the task. born in the valley, he grew up hearing his parents and family sing the songs that belong to the region, and he was determined that the music and traditions shouldn’t slip away into obscurity. with targ, the album he’s made with his band bargou 08, yahyaoui has perfectly fused the past and the present to place bargou on the map.

there’s not a lot to tell about the project glow in the dark by a certain harry miller. only perhaps we can state that with these eight tracks at hand harry miller accomplished probably the most enchanting album of the still quite young year. just when we wanted to dismiss the short-dated genre of chillwave wistfully, “future bliss” comes along with a bewitching sound hailing from an optimistic but cranky future. already the opening track “step one” with its vocal samples and its spoken word intro is futuristic soul full of affirmation of life pillowed on a synth bedding smoothed to the max up to its edges. but also the following seven tracks spread infectious positive vibes all around. the magic of glow in the dark’s tracks is energized mostly by miller’s delicate way of treating his various samples, a wary manner one usually only shows when picking up a guitar. and unlike sample based music feeding from hiphop his tracks are completely free from any sort of nostalgia, because all of his songs are designed for the future through and through. “future bliss” is one hell of a joy ride, from the first note to the last tone. the neon funk of “1987”, the broken beat of “7 billion = 1”, the synth pop of “the last dance” and in general, all of the eight tracks could be little, but great hymns on their own. but only in its entirety they sparkle this fathomless ingeniousness hidden in glow in the dark. in the end it seems to be wiser that one has as little background information as possible to be able to lose oneself fully in this “future bliss”.

paris, 1954. henri-françois rey wrote the thema of the piece la bande à bonnot and asked boris vian to write the songs in order it to become a musical comedy. la bande a bonnot was the name of a french illegal anarchist group. as soon as the piece was played at théâtre du quartier latin, french authorities made it being stopped. musical parts have been lost. 1971, jacques canetti has been told the original handwritten lyrics of the boris vian songs have been found again. jacques canetti asked louis bessières to re create music parts. 1975, jacques canetti released this record with songs being performed by judith magre, yves robert, lucienne vernay, pierre jamet, kim ibarra, maurice barrier & cécile vassort + 2 bonus tracks whose lyrics were suppsoed to be too for the original spectacle.

invaderband are a garage/artrock band assembled in 2012 in derry, northern ireland by mancunian singer, guitarist and songwriter adam leonard who enlisted local musicians to voltage-enhance his dystopian post-punk songs.
leonard has a prolific history as a musician with an extensive back catalogue of solo and collaborative work, and was an occasional member of one of stewart lee’s favourite bands, the owl service. he was also the winner of the uk city of culture 2013 resonate award for best song. invaderband’s lead guitarist / synthmeister is chris mcconaghy aka our krypton son. bass frequencies are provided by gavin mccartney (of here comes the landed gentry, the murder balladers) and drums are handled by rion mccartney (on the album) and john goodman (live).
invaderband’s debut single the implausible man was issued on record store day 2015 and the follow-up, attack of the pod people arrived in december ‘15. the singles were picked up by local, regional and national bbc radio, with the latter making it onto the bbc 6music recommended playlist.

since laars epic crowdsurfing days touring with his former disco-band tog, laars has been honing his production skills with more metric music inspired by the classic godfathers patrick crowley and giorgio moroder for lysår/none 12inch. making playful, percussive house music with a disco heart is one of laars passions that comes into play on this 12inch. sampling hits from his favorite records, sweeping filters, playing on his juno 60 and having his band mates come in to play percussion and synthesizers over some of his grooves you can hear how much fun theyve been having making the record. the mysterious willy nickersen has remixed the songs into deeper territories complementing the record making it able to lift dance floors across the globe.

phonica records is extremely proud to unveil the next release on its special editions imprint the stunning debut album vuduwave by niños indigo. niños indigo is the alias of audiovisual artist valeria hernandez. developed over the course of a month, the album was recorded in hernandezs home country of chile and recorded in a single week, resulting in a flowing, organic yet otherwordly listening experience. valeria explains: this record is a compilation of influences that have been inside me a long time, they keep coming back, afro drums, hindu instruments, candombe, psychedelia in south america. the rhythm of what surrounds me, the lake, the forest near where i live, the calm that surrounds it, the love of my friends and daughter. all of these feelings are what i like to put in my songs, a reminder to value the simple, to seize the resources that i have and to try and free myself of whats on my mind. originally released on digital and cassette label discos cetaceos in 2014, its a recording that truly deserves to be given a new lease of life on vinyl

wer die lp beim record store day 2012 verpasst hat, sollte jetzt zuschlagen, denn -live at acton- enthält eines der letzten konzerte von joe strummer. am 15. november 2002 spielte der britische polit-punk-veteran mit den mescaleros ein benefizkonzert in der londoner acton town hall, um streikende feuerwehrmänner zu unterstützen. im publikum saß damals auch ex-clash-kollege mick jones. der ließ es sich nicht nehmen, spontan bei einigen songs mitzuwirken - zum ersten und letzten mal seit 1983. nur einen monat später, am 22. dezember 2012, verstarb strummer überraschend im alter von 50 jahren.

after a first collaboration focusing on the city of angels, la legend john tejada and acid innovator tin man (johannes auvinen), this time brooding on the latters home city, and formers birthplace, vienna. the austrian capital is known as the city of music and the city of dreams, two broadly aligning concepts that go far in describing this beguiling 12-inch. the four songs were mixed down live to 2 tracks, created in the real world without a daw, or multi tracking, which has really captured the spirit of performance and improvisation. succeeding railjet, a tense drum workout, comes bim, referring to the colorful trams that run through vienna. here, auvinen sculpts his 303 into near-pizzicato form. the acid box is accompanied by stately pads making for one of the duo’s most memorable tracks yet. the next cut, danube nights, references the mighty, ancient river, the flow motion mirrored by a couple of widescreen acid lines. a pensive lead and some melancholy chords emerge, but the drums roll right along like the water- tough enough for a heaving floor with a hint of fragility for the headphones. the record concludes with the acidic prater allee, named after idyllic, sprawling park on the banks of the danube. the duos love letter to vienna is well-suited for travel, for the dance and for dreaming.

east wall was an italian electronic dark wave band started by fabrizio chiari (ex keyboardist of kirlian camera) and wilma notari in 1982. “silence” was self released by the band in 1991.
we decided to expand the album, releasing it as a deluxe double lp cut louder at 45 rpm. we have also included an unreleased extended version of “ice of fire” and the bonus track “intro”, found on the dat tapes fabrizio chiari sent us. all songs are remastered for vinyl by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. it is housed in the original jacket, featuring a dramatically lit photograph of the band by andrea gambetta. each copy includes an 11x11 double-sided insert with photos of the band, lyrics, and liner notes by intergalactic gary, who’s despair mix turned us onto to this album all songs are remastered for vinyl by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. housed in the original jacket featuring a photo of a boy by pushe 27. each copy includes a 2-sided postcard with photos of the band, lyrics, and liner notes by flemming dalum.

in the summer of 2016 hove went to france for two weeks to start writing and recording his new ep portes du soleil. together with his girlfriend they spent two weeks at le pascalet, a house in the woods of the cevennes, right outside the small village of st. etienne vallee franc&#807,,,aise. equipped with a sampler, a drum-machine,some synths, effect pedals and a mic for feld- recordings, he built the foundation of the 4 songs that would later become the ep portes du soleil. all the songs started out as live-jams. the goal was to create different moods and patterns inspired by the surroundings of the forest, long walks, playing petanque and plenty of pastis. the tracks were later fnalized back home at hoves studio in zurich. musically portes du soleil feels like the natural follow up to his debut ep journey to arendal. hoves tracks are wavering between sozzled grooves and warm, woozy atmospheres. field- recordings from their daily routine in and around the house were either used to enrich the ambiance, or as in calme infni, they were transformed into a whole song. even though portes du soleil was written during the summer, the record is not bound to any season it is simply an excerpt of hoves life in 2016.

madame e. is a musical setting of georges bataille’s “madame edwarda”, a short novel that interlaces themes of eroticism, religiosity and death, and was written under the pseudonym pierre angelique in 1941, during the occupation of paris. composer mirco magnani wrote eleven electronic pieces and presented them to actor/singer ernesto tomasini. they turned them into songs by adding vocal melodies and together they produced a libretto based on bataille’s french text. the result of their dynamic interpretation is a hypnotically spellbinding performance where the audience is transported through worlds – ancient and new – and where tomasini’s haunting falsetto conveys the tormented emotions in bataille’s work and becomes the instrument that articulates the writer’s famously obscure themes.

new band name, new lp, the former max graef band toured and worked on new music all year. musical progress, and the impression of not enough edge and rawness in a lot of recent music, inspired and motivated a majority of the recording. the band has grown as a unit and wrote a lot of material together this year in late night sessions. during 2 weeks of recording the new songs in the studio the goal was to try all sorts of instruments, amps and effects and be open to any combination of sounds. furthermore, they and engineer lutz fahrenkrog-petersen tried to capture and maintain the raw feeling of the live recordings using almost exclusively analog pedals and racks as well as keeping the editing of the recordings to a minimum. although bands like et cetera (wolfgang dauner), embryo or xhol have heavily infuenced max graef and his band, the result turned out very original ranging from distorted jazz-rock to experimental soul, electronic percussion workouts to free sound experiments and psychedelic rock. with some tracks being around 14 minutes long, it is better to let the music speak for itself though.
