rekids begins 2016 with the launch of an exciting new talent. south korea-born dj and producer peggy gou has been honing her production skills since her days in london. now based in berlin, gou has drawn on her years of djing to help shape a sound that draws on detroit & nyc house, as well as the african rhythmic sensibility and boogie funk influences she shares with early sounds duo nu guinea, with whom she had piano lessons and sought production advice from as her music took shape. in addition to her work as a stylist and fashion producer, gou has also drawn on her art & design abilities to create the ep artwork.

brstl returns with two house cuts from jay l, his second release for the label. started in 2011 as a means to highlight house and techno being produced in bristol, the label watched over by shanti celeste and idle hand’s chris farrell is now into double figures.show me on the a-side is a finely constructed piece of house music aimed at djs and dancers. anyone who saw jays recent boiler room debut will know his musical style, steeped in classic us house, soul and boogie but with a tastefully bumpy uk edge. the b-side blue age is a deeper cut living up to its title, all wistfull piano keys and a subdued bass line. this is jay l and brstl doing what they do best, sending vibes from bristol to the world.

last spotted together on the cut some three years ago with their eponymous debut lp, the crew like kaidi tatham, akwasi mensah, matt lord, and dego ‘ranks’ mcfarlane reunite for this fresh 2000black 12&#8243,,,,,. off the christmas card list is apparently a precursor to a second album from the quartet and it’s the last 12&#8243,,,,, in a fine year for 2000black that saw the killer dego lp as the centrepiece. the a-side is dedicated to the title cut, an endlessly slinky boogie number that really showcases the collective musicality of this crew, whilst the b-side is split between “hurry whilst they are away” and “fila high”. the former is bugged out beat down west london-style, and the latter a killer latin-flecked cut.

new zealand based crate digger frank booker invites good friend julien dyne to drop the second release on his new imprint down in the basement. jd picks up where the man called booker left off on vol 1 and gets straight up to speed cutting up rare boogie, disco and afro jams and employing his trademark raw cuts in an old school style, while lacing oodles of fx n stuff into the mix. the overall sound is reminiscent of the early idjut boys material, which is so close to mr booker s heart.

marvis dee opens the newly varnished in the my dreams imprint with a boogie-led 5-track ep of late-night 80s house and slow groove-soaked beats. drawing from the magical influence of the conga-a-plenty tr-727 drum machine along with stomach rumbling basses and glistening synth romanticism conjured from the same machine. sailing over alpha moon is the first in a 3 ep series exploring these ideas, machines and the nostalgic attachment to things we have once experienced but may not remember. trapped solely in the memories of others, but returning in our dreams.

following the recent success of french disco boogie sounds, dj and producer charles maurice is back on favorite recordings, this time engaging a musical world tour, in the search of hidden productions with a touch of aor style. the result is aor global sounds, a new compilation made of 8 forgotten and rare tracks produced between 1977 and 1982 in all parts of the globe.

craig peyton was a mainstay in nyc jazz and dance music beginning in the 70s. from playing on dan hartmans -vertigo/relight my fire- to his work on boogie funk productions with daryl payne, he is one of the unsung heroes of the era where disco transitioned into house music. his drum machine and synth based cover of william devaughans -just be thankful- came out on profile records in 1983, a daring move for a white man trained on the vibes. he gives the jam a haunting and funky rework that has only escalated in popularity over the years. it has been bootlegged extensively while original copies remain quite elusive.

wonderful re issue of leroy burgess (collaborator with patrick adams amongst many others) single heartbreaker / stranger. this single originally released in 1983, his second ever production, showcases his wonderful production and vocal talents on this boogie classic. shep pettibone supplies both mixes on this extended 12inch from the salsoul vaults.

transmitting from new york (via toronto), jex aka jex opolis has so far been known as the man behind and in front of the good timin label. infamous for its boogie burner bombs to quote discogs member kutter karlo jex, trades his label for running back and a shifts the gear. up with the tempo and down with the lights, there still is a variety of styles. studio e is named after an after hours spot in edmonton that the record s author partied at in the early 2000s, also sounds like something ivan smagghe would have enjoyed at that point in time. laxmi tool is referencing classic tribal house and a street in pune, where jex wifes grandma bought the drum used in this track. on the flip, harpa brags and boasts with its trampoline bass line, while la casa surfs some timpani waves.

jack cutter is a songwriter and guitarist based in the san francisco bay area in california. he started with a $5 banjo just after finishing high school. in university, during the late 60’s, he performed with bar bands in buffalo, new york. after completing university and a year as an aerospace engineer, he decided that attack helicopters were not really what the world needed and so he headed off to california in pursuit of music and mystic times. fast forward to fall 2014: jack is playing his quintessential tune, ‘gift of our fathers’ in the sf bart subway to an onslaught of morning commuters when he was spotted by 40 thieves. eureka! love at first sight and in the next few months, two of jack’s original acoustic pieces were given the 40 thieves treatment. enter david sanderson aka david harks, a singer, songwriter, producer and label curator from the east sussex region of the uk. ‘having fallen in love with the cosmic boogie (of 40 thieves classic ‘backward love’) i really felt i would love nothing more than to write a tune with them. layne got back in touch with a track he was working on entitled serpent strut with jack cutter and we worked via email over a few months to brew up that misty soul.’ deep, stony, psychedelic, drawing from the well of hawkwind, joni mitchell, david crosby, baffo banfi and tolkien-tinged acoustic led zep, the proof of concept is now complete and in the capable and loving hands of claremont 56.
