in 2016. i rented out a small piano studio in east london for nearly the whole year and set out to write an introspective, trendless, and mostly beatless album. inspired by albums from this mortal coil and scott walker, who also sought freedom to work outside of the expectations of their previous work, i limited the instrumentation to mostly an acoustic piano and effects, which left space to expose a lot of emotional vulnerabilities about myself and people close to me. writing lullabies about being a mother in a dystopian world, with pensive words about swimming against the current as a female artist, i felt free enough to tell untold truths that i’ve never felt comfortable talking about within music. free, liberated, empowered. naked.

thomas leer is an innovative electronic musician from port glasgow, scotland. he began singing for a local band at age 13, and was writing his own music by 18. by 1977, he had moved to london, where he fronted pressure, a clash­-esque punk group with fellow experimental scottish musician robert rental. after hearing kraftwerk, leer became interested in synthesizers – not long after, he was exploring the experimental techniques of eno, zappa, beefheart, faust, and can. in 1978, thomas released his first single, private plane / international , on his own oblique records that we reissued in 2015. 1979 is a 14-song collection spread across two pieces of vinyl clocking in at 70 minutes. leer says, 1979 was a great year for making music.

london’s breaker breaker continue to build steam behind releases from rgl and the rapidly ascending ross from friends with a fresh 12” courtesy of bristol based half nelson. utilising a meld of hardware, old tape recorders and original instrumentation - the bristol based producer readies the inaugural release on this newly formed alias and in doing so presents the aptly titled ‘first step’.
slotting in neatly with the breaker breaker catalogue, the first step ep smothers burly drums with woozy sampling that work together to build a trippy, floor-ready sound.

london-based producer and dj tarquin has returned to gobstopper. “grease (chord mix)” is a high tempo example of the genre’s more experimental side, using fragmented percussive samples set to a background of pitch-bent chord stabs and twisted melodic elements.
providing as much impact in the track’s negative space as in its instrumentation, tarquin s minimalist approach to production on “grease (chord mix)” establishes its boldness and makes it one of the most recognisable examples of deconstructed club music of the year so far.
