youthstar joined camo & krooked in 2011 for their “cross the line” and “zeitgeist” tours. at the same time, he began to work closely with chinese man. invited for special shows at the beginning, they continued to work more and more closely together and has now become the official rapper/mc of the group.

next up on aus music is the welcome return of a good friend and label regular - the ever ascendant marquis hawkes. having released 4 eps on aus thus far, he makes his return in the form of a blazing, floor-focused 2 track ep which sits neatly with previous outings on the label. ‘the basement is burning’ takes it’s name from a near-fateful experience stemming from an electrical fire in hawkes’ home which culminated in him and his family being evacuated from a 5th floor balcony. having ensured the safety of his family, he made a dash across berlin to make a 10am live show, a few days later with the power back on ‘the basement is burning’ was born. the title track kicks off with splashy, live drum samples that are armoured with electronic layers before a feel-good piano lick glides into the mix. bursting synths are introduced before ducking strings chords bring the track to an ecstatic conclusion. ‘tower block boogie’ then tumbles short funk samples through bold drums as a fervid sense of tension burns throughout.

after a long hiatus the fasaan recordings crew finally emerges from their basement to break out a second volume of their chalice imprint. functioning as a looser side vehicle to fasaan, chalice is a home for rawer and more uncompromising side projects of the fasaan crew and their extended family. honing in on a murky zone of cheap-sounding machine rhythms and punchy boogie-influenced proto-house sounds, the chalice style is in your face and then out the door just like that: take it or leave it.

fredfades is a norwegian producer specialising in the uncut raw hip hop. here’s his debut solo album, “warmth”. (vinyl includes download code) in 2013 he dropped a classic with ivan ave called breathe on kingunderground records. warmth is his debut solo album following a long line of singles, collaborative albums, cassettes and load of independently released projects. the album has 16 tracks made from jazz, soul and boogie samples with gritty drums and a dash of synth stabs, mixed by fred and mastered at strype audio in oslo by christian obermayer. the title track warmth is the last track on the album and was sampled from a live recording off one of fred’s favourite jazz records that is always on heavy rotation at the crib. guests at the table include med (stones throw), mndsgn (stones throw), ivan ave, (jakarta), moruf, koreatown oddity (stones throw), chester watson and more.

released in 1983, guy cuevas 12inch single -obsession- is probably one of the best french disco-boogie records, enriched by jean-paul goude s artwork for the cover. the a-sides nassau mix by fran?ois k is a sensual and airy journey, while the b-side s london mix offers a more realistic approach that will please the more classic-listening disco enthusiasts. huge tip!!

80s disco infected

quietly building an enthusiastic following with a steady stream of eps and singles, m.o.o.n.’s debut full-length “clinically blasé” creatively navigates a wide range of emotive synthesizer music deviating from dancegeared tropes in favor of freer arrangements and lush instrumentation. while the rhythms are rooted in variants of house, boogie, and synth-pop clinically blase never tips it’s hand stylistically in any particular direction resulting in a playful balance of retro sounds and futuristic ideas highlighting a deft melodic sensibility.

one of electronic music’s greats steps back into the limelight with his first ep in more than 10 years. erik van den broek, the dutch producer who is probably better known under some of his pseudonyms such as shiver, essit musique and acid kid dominated the 90’s with a slew of brilliant acid and electro releases on dance arena productions and shiver. erik was a firm favourite of dave clarke and laurent garnier who included some of his tracks on their perfectly blended mix cds (x-mix electro boogie and laboratoire mix respectively).
erik already made an appearance on de:tuned’s 5 years box set in 2014 with the track primerose and now he’s back with more previously unreleased material. the tracks on offer are all on a deeper tip, with warm yet slightly eerie and mysterious sounds, clever programming and subtle effects. proof that erik has still got it after all these years. these tracks were made during an emotional time for erik, something that is clearly reflected in the music.
once again we enlisted alan oldham for artwork duties and matt colton for mastering the source material to perfection. this ep will be available on 180 gr vinyl. a digital release will also be available from all the usual outlets. de:tuned are honoured to have worked with erik on this release, a very personal record for him. thanks erik & emiel for your confidence and support!

in 2017, the finnish jazz scene seems to bubble with talent. one of the most prominent players in this mix is by definition, trumpeter jukka eskola. after over a decade of adventures in different spaces of jazz – from the dance floor burn of the five corners quintet to the raw expressive modes of mikko innanen’s small big band, jimi tenor’s cosmic jazz and his own prime cti styled solo recordings – eskola takes things back to bare basics. and as usual, when it’s done right, it’s the best thing out there.

any disco dj worth their weight in vinyl knows the name donnell pitman, and until now this has been mostly due to his highly sought after work of the late 70s and early 80s. renewed interest in donnell has reached critical peak over the past few years, fueled by red greg’s feature of donnell’s seminal “love explosion” on joey negro’s under the influence vinyl compilation series and chicago’s numero group putting out long forgotten, unreleased boogie bangers “burning up” and “taste of honey” in 2015.
it was this refreshed enthusiasm that caught the attention of producer kumar mcmillian of chicago-based disco ensemble wings of sunshine. kumar’s group was looking for another vocal collaborator following their 7” debut release on star creature records. a casual introduction led to an informal studio session between the two culminating in a modern disco masterpiece.
