chaka khan, born yvette marie stevens, is an american singer-songwriter whose career has spanned four decades, beginning in the 1970s as the frontwoman and focal point of the funk band rufus. often dubbed the queen of funk, khan has won ten grammys and has sold an estimated 70 million records worldwide.
*what cha gonna do for me* (1980) is arguably the best effort of the partnership with arif mardin. slowly but surely the two began to craft an even more successful and innovative sound. the album peaked at #3 in the r&b albums chart of 1981.
the cover of *we can work it out* gets a brash and funky stevie wonder –style arrangement, with gregory phillanganes doing great synth work. the best song here, *i know you, i live you*, displays brilliant bass and drum.

the groove brothers, aka jef k and rhythm&soul, keep things moving with the second release on their fledgling label, on a mission records. it’s been seven months since the label’s debut, demonstrating the duo’s considered approach to their outlet, which has been set up to capture the true spirit of house music, basing its ideals on some of the industry’s most respected labels and keeping that timeless, classic ethos alive. this second release unites the label owners with a couple of newcomers to the scene. retaining the sultry outlook of the first release the groove brothers inject jazzy notes and smooth funky rhythms into their music, while mr ks and kub follow in a similar vein with their well-crafted contributions. ks expanding on the jazz theme, while kub takes a more sensual pathway. having previously kept their re-edit series in-house, leeds-based crate-diggers joe s bakery have invited moton (aka london veterans diesel and dave jarvis) to deliver the latest release. those who ve followed the moton records inc series (active since the 90s) will know what to expect: expert re-rubs of obscure material that get the right balance between dancefloor chops and home listening selections. look out for the odd shuffle and electric piano solos of -moody blues-, the percussive early 80s, synth-heavy live disco brilliance of -zoo- (yes, it s definitely balearic) and the hazy, midtempo disco-funk of -bumps-. it s getting progressively hard to find worthwhile re-edit 12- singles, but this one s a genuine killer

for the second release of s3a records, s3a chose the most talented parisian new blooded artist nowadays: neue grafik ! he has jazz, funk and hiphop roots and his house music sweats all of these influences. this ep goes from “great sample based house musi”c to “saxophone played bridges” passing by delicious piano interludes witch can demonstrate all breadth of his talent. a release made to last for years with a classy delightful efficiency.

after the success of their first release charmin are back with another high quality wax. this offering showcases the talents of florist and close friend of the imprint tilman, all pressed up on heavyweight vinyl with a lovingly designed cover. the ep kicks off with “proof nothing” which is a statement of intent. deep, churning piano chords overlaid with delayed vocal samples all underpinned with a solid beat and deep bass. next up “raw” does exactly what it says on the tin. this is a stripped down thumper with crunchy claps and an infectious groove. “once again” has a looser, more percussive feel to it with machine gun snares rattling off overt the top of a killer chord line. bringing things to a close is “mood swings” which builds brooding atmospheres and eerie vocal snippets. all in all this ep carries on the good work of this exciting new label. charmin continues its journey to bring you uncompromising, underground house music of the highest order.

portrait of a legend: 1951–1964 is a compilation album by american singer-songwriter sam cookethe compilation is generally considered the most complete and comprehensive collection of cooke s work. it has been included on various -best-of- lists by music publications, including rolling stone and time.

itokim, aka tendo-based producer takuro ito, aligns with dj bone s subject detroit label with the subject japan: rhythm poems ep and his opening gambit certainly leaves a dent. -motechnique- has been a staple of bone s 3 deck attacks in recent months and it will have eyebrows raised and mouths open from the off. weighty but warm kicks start as they mean to go on, bursting with pace and vigour as thrusts and stabs pinprick the brooding chords. the laidback, easy-going connotations of the title to -roll up and shine- are very much the ethos and aesthetic of the production, as a playful, bubbling melody sets a warm and almost sugary tone from the off before being bolstered by a suave melange of full-bodied kick and dexterous percussion. itokim rounds off his first outing on subject detroit with -the mood device-, a to the point groover that melds elements of the previous productions to stunning effect. a genuine builder of a track with a straight and true trajectory, -the mood device- melds innumerable coatings of percussion and synth as stabs are layered and layered again, clotting and coagulating the composition in to one delightfully deep and multidimensional slice of formidable dancefloor composite.

russian producer neotnas deliveres >slow & steady<, his first ep on soundtravels (st006). we have already introduced him on our first various artist ep >point of view part 1< (st005). typical for his sound is that warm, organic feel all over his house and dubtechno productions. very often accompanied by female vocals and its almost like you hear somebody play a live instrument if you listen carefully. the ep kicks off with the massive floorfiller >trunk party<. an energetic, solid built up track with that bassline killer hook. >user mood< has that typical basic channel touch. dubby techno guided by a floating bassline and little pleasant delays. we are slowly moving forward with evolving sticky, dubby beats in the title track >slow & steady<. this one will warm up every dancefloor, but is also very welcome in the afterhours. the last addition to this ep is >hold<, a warm deephouse track with moody, hopeful and sensitive sounds which reflect beautiful emotions. timeless material again which covers you up like a warm blanket. enjoy!

the next release on discovery recordings comes from catamaran, a young nyc based producer whos been coming to the parties and feeling the vibe. he sent us some really tite demos and we got in the studio to make them titer. the tracks are infused with the life of the city - from jackin house to lush rhodes grooves. we all love fort romeau, so we had him do a remix that takes the sound across the pond. 500 copies, hand stamped, vinyl only.
