moscow records close 2016 with a fantastic 3-track ep from berlin imports roustam and tolga fidan. this being their first outing together, the pair deliver a high quality, intelligent journey through minimal house and techno. the record opens with brodsky beat, a groovy, dance floor-focused track. lively percussion and tight bass communicate perfectly with the hope-filled lead to build tension throughout. the omega variant on the a2 has a much more abstract feel. broken beats and skippy percussion play back and forth with deep, spacey hooks and a peculiar synth, giving the listener a sense of mystery. finally, growing up is just a phase is a calming 14 minute trip that uses the entirety of the b side to tell a story of reassurance and calm. laid-back rhythms, guitar samples, relaxed vocals and a wandering synth line work together to form the perfect warmup track.

nicetraxuk strides with confidence to its fourth release with some grade a producers on board to confirm the label s position as a trusted outpost for upfront club tackle. moodymanc is on fine form on -where s the story?- dropping an expressive set of drums in a crafty broken beat funk as submerged chords play out and an unnamed source waxes lyrical about stories in house tracks. lil mark meanwhile links up with jcub for -epic 40,- a seriously stripped down club workout that maximizes on finger clicking and moody bass in a flawless demonstration of restraint.

a bonafide legend of chicago house and techno, dj skull has done the business since the early days on all manner of labels, and he s still on it now. shoring up at mentha for this no-nonsense four tracker, skull is on especially deep form here as he heads inwards with the subtle shuffle of -accent- and the insistent melodic mantras of -on the double-. the story is no different on the b side, although -rythmic- sports a more sprightly set of drums in amongst the strafing synth lines before -the unknown land- turns out one of the more eerie jack tracks of our time.

the double portrait ep is tobs and lems story of rituals of descent. don t look in the mirrors left and right of you. still, you need yourself. flip the coin from time to time, be tender and never stop. somebody deserves it.

harleighblu x starkiller is a formidable link-up between british soul/electronic singer harleighblu and la duo starkiller (the production outfit of c.e. garcia & alfredo e. fratti, members of adrian younges venice dawn). a science fiction film in sonic form, the amorine lp tells a tragic future love story in which high drama collides with a cool, clean, sci-fi atmosphere via hip hop sensibilities that draw on musical references from psychedelic funk to dj shadow to portishead.

legendary nyc dj / editor danny krivits story in contemporary dance music is a long and storied one. dannys got to be one of the hardest working men behind the decks right now with an international rep and dj schedule truly befitting of his time spent making us dance over the last 45 (!) years. it makes perfect sense then, that one of the most seminal disco labels of all time would call upon mr. ks sharp editing skills when reappraising some of the jams from their extensive catalogue. tk disco is the label in question here and they ve let danny loose on a pair of dance-floor burners that all disco heads will be familiar with.

as we welcome another talented artist to our family we asked viken about the first part of a two part release and he told us it s really important to understand that this ep is a series of pictures telling a story. combining the names of all the tracks one gets this interesting and dreamy sentence, on a blue road a white shadow feels the winter. to translate these pictures into music, i needed a very particular sound. since i am a huge fan of jazz music i took one of my favorite records, used a lot of samples and reworked them in my own way. from the technical aspect, i decided to reconnect with my first love: analog machines. i love working with sound textures. i stayed away from my laptop and all my vst/plugins as i felt the need to compose these tracks in an unusual way: i wanted the sound to be really pure. that s the reason why this process was so essential for me. for me, this ep is the first one to sound like this. this is the first of two releases from a deeply talented soul. a patient collage of house, jazz, acid squiggles and deep emotion. played and loved all summer long by lee burridge at all day i dream, these tracks will stay with you through winter and into next summer.

Æ is the third part of bjarki triptych of lps to be released this year. Æ is a particularly icelandic form, pronounced “i” in english, bjarki thinks it just looks good. here it is a selection of music that is at its core quite simple, with restrained instrumentation, made on hardware and features a selection of older works and the most recent produced just weeks ago. bjarki is from iceland. born and raised. despite the fact that bjarki is known for making extremely powerful dance floor tracks he doesn’t seem to belong to any particular genre. something this triptych of lps demonstrates very well. his music is at times cinematic and there’s a story behind each track. bjarki’s music always has something to do with him personally, but he’d rather the listener lose themselves in the music than pay much attention to the man behind them. either on a record or to one of his ever evolving live sets.

the first release from naissance musik (nm) is a 12” vinyl from the super-group dream scoring (hear and hakim murphy) entitled images of a myth. it is comprised of 4 tracks. a myth is a legendary story that a community validates to explain part of its reality. however any member or group within the community can have his or her own version of the myth, and the myth can also evolve through time. we may all listen to the same track but this track still calls up intimate images for each and every one of us. a myth is full of adventure and mystery, it is epic and full of emotions. it can be anything from the lost ark to greek gods fighting. the aim is to fill our bodies and minds with emotions. the main idea is to tell stories like books or movies, but through musical notes & rhythm. the music makers provide the musical image, the listeners create the myth. and vice-versa.

following his stunning everything is nothing ep, which kicked off the hubble telescope series for solar one music in 2015, luxus varta (aka emeric di paolo) is back with a new four track ep for french label, intramuros. ‘rosenhan experiment’ (named after david rosenhan’s famous study to determine the validity of psychiatric diagnosis, published in 1973 under the title “on being sane in insane places”) takes us on another electro trip into the human mind with paris the black fu from detroit grand pubahs once again making an appearance, on the track ‘losquato’. the ep opens with the wonderfully shimmering ‘wenn’ before luxus varta makes striking use of his background as a drummer on ‘lizzy’. ‘losquato’ is a playful addition with stripped back rhythms under paris’ story telling that bemoans a man’s work frustrations and resulting mental state (“i gave up therapy about a month ago. my therapist jumped out of a window”), while closer ‘tempsun’ is almost melancholy in its measured minimalism. recommended for lovers of drexciya and dopplereffekt.

while producing the viscera trilogy, fango has tried to understand something about himself. in order to do this, he had to enter into his own body, just like dante entered hell, studying and analysing himself from the inside, diving through organs, guts and grey matter. did it work? yes and no, depending how you look at it. for sure, it helped him in the creation of 3 devastating and introspective eps, but a lot of questions are still unsolved. viscera part 3 is the last leg of a journey that disrupted your 2016 and marks the beginning of a new absurd phase for fango, but this is another story. for the time being we leave you with amnios, metacarpo and metulla. this is viscera 3/3.

* galaxies compared* is the debut album from belgiums dany rodriguez. having released a series of eps for labels such as kombination research, mbr, bush, mb elektronics, bulletdodge and phobiq he now runs his own rmr label, where his techno and electronic sound has developed and flourished into this, his biggest project to date.

black box recorders aren’t black, they’re orange. often they are destroyed and they don’t always have all the answers we’re looking for. this recording documents a collision/collaboration between two sound artists, michael bjella (gog) and robert skrzy&#324,,,ski (micromelancolié). this is what survived and this is all we have left, the sounds should tell the whole story.

dominatrix is a synth-pop/electro project from the 80’s, best remembered for their 1984 club hit, “the dominatrix sleeps tonight”. the brains behind this new york city based project is producer/songwriter stuart argabright, whose other projects over the years have included ike yard, black rain, the futants, the death comet crew, the dystopians, and the voodooists.
the story behind this project began one night when a young stuart met a beautiful mysterious older women in a corvette while hitchhiking. they became friends, spending nights at her east side apartment, getting high and listening to bowie records. after argabright noticed the bull whips and manacles hanging in her closet, it became apparent that his friend’s occupation was chaining up, whipping, and torturing upscale manhattan businessmen (who were very willing victims and had the credit card bills to prove it). this project came to life because of his sincere admiration and respect for professional dominatrixes.

celestial being visited nairobi at the end of august and beginning of september 2012 where he worked with local musicians to create celestial music. kenge kenge brought cow horns and hand made drums and were joined by local folk singers olith, who had come to nairobi through making music with king kong and irungu with his father who has since passed. when asked what the kenge groove sounded like, the receptionist prisca said its like the angel is coming before proceeding to provide additional vocals for all three tracks. nairobi story tells of an ancient village story passed down as a folk song to the present generation. celestial being kept forgetting whether olith was male or female and ending up making a song with him called all woman. this is currently a vinyl only release

the intensity of neznan his personality and talent made us decide to go all the way for this release. his story is remarkable and feels like a paradox. his musical ability is full of details and his creativity is a perfect match with float. if you take your time to understand his visions and incomprehensible ideas we’re sure you will love this piece of art as much as we do.
