paint en pointe is a compilation of selected compositions by eugene ward, otherwise known to most as dro carey / tuff sherm. the tracks have been taken from a series of performance collaborations with choreographer patric kuo over a 5 month period. the performances, which occurred monthly in the latter half of 2014, took place in spot81 gallery in chippendale, sydney. kuo and ward, along with a roster of dancers, were invited to create new dance works that responded to the exhibition occurring during the given month. throughout the series many ensemble types were explored, ranging from solos up to large groups of as many as 16 dancers. patric kuo is a sydney based dancer/choreographer originally trained in all styles, but presently heavily draws his influence from hip hop and contemporary dance. coming from a performing arts and commercial dance background, kuo has expanded his ideas about communicating to an audience, moving away from the traditional entertainment relationship towards an approach that includes engagement more informed by performance art

a hypnotic and seductive slow motion groove led along by one of italo discos most swooningly understated yet affecting vocal performances. if ever there has been a record crying out for a proper reissue it is this one. limited official reissue - first copies on translucent blue vinyl.

as we move into a new year, again start the cogs of labels and artists around the world, this is certainly the case for disc over music as they bring us their first release of 2015. high off the back of exquisite releases in 2014 from luca lozano & mr. ho and nicson, disc over’s first installment of 2015 comes from label head tim green - a three track ep bursting with two classic tg productions and grooves which is then given another dimension with a remix from the talented german born producer borrowed identity. the ep kicks off with the aptly named ‘scar’ - a track which when heard, truly makes it mark. it sets the tone for the rest of the ep with it’s prominent bassline and haunting howls whilst dreamlike keys bounce and float above. track two, ‘we thought’ is taken down a gear but keeps all of the groove built from ‘scar’. it begins with a simple trademark tg bassline and is allied with light and free singular keys. the listener is then joined by vocals which along with the previous elements take you on a real trip. borrowed identity speeds things up right away with his remix of ‘we thought’. the track is morphed into a dancefloor groove with the comforting vocals darkened, cut and reworked on top of an unpredictable and fluctuating bassline. managing to keep the identity of tim’s original the track becomes something completely different and certainly makes you feel you want to take the trip

the 7th installment on the brothers label sees a whole new batch of collaborators join the family, along with one previous member from bros003.

automat and max loderbauer open proceedings on the new selekt label quite masterfully with an auspicious 4 track ep - verstärker / hall / kompressor / echo. how did this come about? automat, busy recording their second album, came across max loderbauer in the neighbouring studio. they got along swimmingly and started working together straight away. everything played live, no overdubs as automats bass player georg zeitblom confirms - first take, no shake. the studio was stripped down to basics. no computers though: a tape machine, guitar amplifier, analogue eqs, rehearsal space: re-rewind, the crowd say bo selekter!

midgar is proud to introduce a newcomer for the third release. a great debut for the maltese cloned, delivering not less than 4 cuts with sapphire 1990 e.p. the record, way more straightforward and groove centered than the previous midgar outputs, opens with sapphire 1990, track that sounds like very nostalgic memories from a timeless rave. thanks to a genuine simplicity and the great arrangement of its elements, this first cut has the perfect characteristics to become a dancefloor anthem. on the same side, a live out-take from cloned’s repertory, the pendulum swinging synth-lines which dominate pretty direct rhythmics filled with hi-hats and claps over a costant background noise. belgassem as the first cut on the b side, is an absolutely heavy one for the label’s standards, made of deep kickin’ drums and haunting voices empowered by a really strong and obsessive acid-line. closing the vinyl, the slow (and again really acidic) submerging is like a lysergic vessel headed to more comfortable dimensions, where groovy drums are embraced by very bright heavenly pads. sudden death is instead a chilled-out broken beat interrupted by confused speeches and detroitish pads, resulting as a modern ritual of ascension towards higher spheres. corel drives the release to the end, recalling most of its main features: a restless run through misty soundscapes along a path studded of bells and overwhelming, sharp hi-hats.

originally hailing from slovakia but now based out of berlin just_me has been slowly making waves on the underground having previously released for baile music, 1trax and act natural respectively, as well remixing alongside the likes of hector, laura jones and the great todd terry. not a label to pigeon hole ourselves to any one genre or style of house or techno we are constantly looking to push the boundaries on the music we release with the pattern ep we have done just that! as just_me brings us two original deep, stripped back and dubbed out cuts adding some atmospheric and acidic tinges along the way. on the remix duties we have two very capable artists first up is cocoon s martinez who has shown us his new deeper side with an altogether tougher but minimal groove and feel on pattern 01 and to complete the remixes desolat s fosky brings a much more energetic approach to pattern 02. !

cult electronic specialist enzo elia (balearic gabba sound system / el freakadelle) has long been turning out hot edits and remixes on hell yeah, always inventing new genres and creating compelling grooves as he goes. now he is back with his own original ep featuring feat italian jazz singer roberto cherillo aka rokkerillo. this ep finds enzo going back to his techy roots and comes complete with remixes by the legendary dj kaos (of jolly jams) and with a terrific version produced along with jazz trio, 3io.

*i cant even afford bed linen, let alone a 909*. the unpretentious of jay donaldson is disarming in many different ways. we consider donaldson aka palms trax to be one of the most promising new artists to date. his sound situates him firmly along the chicago-detroit axis, cooking up pad-driven jams, off kilter drums and hazy synths that shift like a gentle musical tide. in 2013 he inaugurated the lobster theremin label, the london-based imprint that quickly became one of the most talked about record labels around. when not travelling the world for prime-time gigs donaldson holds a residency at the widely respected berlin community radio. it is with great pleasure that we welcome golden boy palms trax to dekmantel records.

one of kindischs first releases of the year has come to us via the duo known as bedouin. after their ‘mirage ep that dropped last summer causing some serious waves in electronic music … tamer malki, along with partner rami abousabe have served up their new ep called ‘whispering words of wisdom, as their first joint venture for kindisch

subjected, boss of the vault series imprint, makes his warm up debut with his rest one ep. the release includes two original tracks plus a remix by oscar mulero. rest one is based on a cemented beat made of metal hits, fat kicks and abused hi hats. the synthetic sequences, deep sub frequencies and aggressive drones move along the beat changing shape and evolving as the track goes on. shift is the second number, sci-fi arpeggios, subtle kicks, moving percussions and an hypnotic arrangement. oscar mulero reshapes shift by preserving the original arpeggio, adding effects and peppering the track with synth stabs in a constantly changing structure.

this february nightdrivers deliver three first-rate cuts on holic trax for the quando party dove vai ? ep. following on from burnski s the hours ep which saw love from names like mr g, catz n dogz, dam swindle and eats everything, holic trax returns this february with nightdrivers quando party dove vai ? . since delivering their debut release on bosconi records back in 2013 the berlin-based duo nightdrivers have been going from strength to strength stacking up further releases on claap, their own nightdrivers label and now holic trax. to get things underway the light pads of resta pure dove sei give the opening track a floaty quality while the weighty percussion and subtle rhythms build proceedings into a steady and infectious groove. nightdrivers appear to go up a gear as the ep progresses with the rippling drums and dynamic arrangements of la ronde suite (but not for me) while fast cars maintains the lively vibe of its predecessor and frenetically bubbles along over busy modulations, wacky intonations and infectious licks to dish up a suitably punchy close to this bouncy ep.

are we all tired of the *artist returns after number years in obscurity* headline yet? because michna sure is. nearly seven years following the nyc dj/producers debut album for ghostly, magic monday, he has finished the official follow up to that record, but adrian yin michna doesnt want to overstate what happened in the interim. *life just moves,* he starts casually, *there has been a lot going on.* dj gigs, music production for video games and commercials, and film scoring have kept him busy, along with a healthy balance of painting, biking, and other non-musical endeavors. in light of michnas sophomore lp, thousand thursday, though, it all seems beside the point. simply put, his latest record is a celebration of the producers love for vibrant electronic music, bothering very little with conceptual or contextual baggage.

for the timely tenth edition of the grey series, m_rec ltd welcomes back donor / truss to the fold. whilst tom russell has been lately flexing his truss muscles with perc and causing a furore as blacknecks with bleaching agent, donors greg schappert has been busy readying his dystopic debut album, against all. after last years swampy aber for their first grey series outing, ash sees the production partnership revived in the form of a trio of gritty, excursive techno works. starting with cut one on the a-side, ash simultaneously builds and decomposes, eked along with hypnotic loops and irritated layers of noise to conclude in a creaking industrial crescendo on the b-side.

mystery production unit dj bmx continue their thrilling, no-nonsense adventures in the underground with the conquest of gravity ep for mil. techno-fused roller -warrior within- gets matters underway as thumping bass and ticking hi hats form the fore of the track, marching along over off-kilter bleeps and succinct glitches. the rough n ready aesthetic of the track sets the tone excellently for the ep, leading coherently into -wonders of time- where slight changes and improvisations keep your attention, with dubbed out key jabs that are matched melodically against atmospheric synth pads whirling in and out over crisp percussion clicks. -spinning across the sky- maintains the inspiration for myriad sources, cosmic, dreamy chimes are sprinkled over a tentatively used piano sequence, distorted key kicks and muddied percussion. its the only moment on the ep to include a vocal, and its used beautifully as it floats around the tracks central structure, lending it a spacious and depth-charged feel. -radim world- finishes everything off with a touch of pepe bradock style elegance - the multi-layered arrangements are fluid and dynamic, resulting in well-executed deep house.

a couple of years ago, the young italian producer known with the name of shinoby got in touch with parris mitchell and started collaborating with him. in a very short time one of the tracks they wrote together was released along the remaster of -all night long-on wicked bass, and another one he wrote on the juke joints vol. 2 ep on deepmoves. istheway is the name of the label he founded to release the music he has been producing in the shades of verona, focusing on the music itself and not wasting time and efforts on fancy, superfluous stuff. on the first release of the label, his lively and solid dancefloor oriented tracks has been remixed by the analogue cops (restoration records) and the detroiter mgun (underground resistance) who have further modeled an essential combination of late night cuts with their trademark basement edge. vinyl only!

nabla is a mathematical function that when applied, gives a multi-dimensional figure the ability to have many slopes in different directions. like the label’s name, the artists’ of nabla interest in all genres and textures will reflect in the varied nature of their future releases. for its first release, nabla artist lakehead continues the well-trodden path between techno and sci-fi but with a more eerie waif-like approach. raw lo-fi influences impose themselves through interesting percussive mechanics and ghost-like synths in a1. the ambient weightlessness of a2 gives way to a greater intensity on the b-side. the offbeat delivery on b1 is guided along industrial sounding landscapes while heavy metal hi-hats and trance-like melody of b2 rounds off a versatile first release

the next record from the bright young ndv stable comes from a couple of outrageously talented folk by the name of chris woodward and antanas antanelis. this is the first record from these guys and they re no novices. this crafted and heavy hitting slice of house is a perfect fit for the ndv mould. the magnificent afrikaan donce ep is full of chunky house tones, shades of mpc, hip hop and sample based house along with a tougher edge

as 2014 comes to an end, the london based duo is closing the year with yet another split ep. on the a-side we have vimmes, a low-slung groove with percussive textures that expand gradually and steadily, evolving along shadowy soundscapes and intricate rhythms. its a fine example of holdie gawns personal style, stripped back grooves moving along melodic tones and sound design. micawber on the other side offers a shuffled up house track under the name de jure. syncopated synth lines, lush pads and melodic textures make this an warm, lush early morning electronic affair.

the third release from wavefreform again comes to us from the east, and this time around it marks a reformation of sound for both the label and the artist. half of the long-running georgian duo greenbeam & leon, boyd schidt is a producer with over a decade of work already under his belt whose first releases emerged in 2007. as a solo artist, his career dates to 2010 with digital releases on georgia’s front rec, fvf records, and emote music, and a track on the new vinyl compilation from studio r°. with the hard, broken kick pattern, elevated tempo, and nods to electro, the a-side ‘phantom’, a collaboration with subex, is a change of pace for the artist and the hardest thing yet to emerge from wavereform. dubwise use of effects shows the same hands still at work, but the sound elements, granulated blasts of static and drop-based structure of the track hold strong parallels to the rejuvenated techno sound currently emerging from the uk. the b-side, ‘structure’, recalls the previous work of the artist: subtle, building dub techno rich in detail and with the dancefloor firmly in mind. there is clear experience at work here with his deliberate deployment and manipulation of elements as the track struts along while enveloping the listener in its smaller details. as it pauses and takes an extended breakdown, the details rush forwards, but it finds renewed force to power itself to the close. coming in this case from an established producer with a long history, this kind of control is not surprising, but it is more indication of the riches of the east that have yet to be discovered by audiences worldwide.

a real thick baseline - a fabulous ep start. of the same title dragon fly comes along with dizzying, but best placed sound effects und a bashing buildup. we love listening to that great sound. neck breaker - not neck breaking but with a most impressive vocal and creative seeded sound expericence. makes us fancy for more like this. and bäms - the ep continues with a track called roll on. quite deep and initiated with a cool vocal - very british - the composition ist a bit more funny - a good mood sound creates an appetite for more. we are hot for the release on stylerockets.

our last ep of the year is a special one as it marks one year of releasing records for keep it zen so we called on ian blevins along with remixes from amsterdams frits wentink and berlins nick beringer to end our year on a high. ian blevins is an influential name in the underground house scene and was mentioned by resident advisor as one of ibizas most talented residents. years of passionately listening to and searching for music, both new and old, has seen ians style mature which has helped shape his own productions and his mysterious duo al gobi.

a three-track release from the prolific french producer brett longman. after a lot of experiences all across europe and a pretty extensive discography, his creativity combined with his production skills makes him one of the most versatile artist today. from rythmic minimal techno to road movie blues or melodic songs, he now enters a crooner techno genre that he is inventing along the way.

the german saying *ist der ruf erst ruiniert, lebt man voellig ungeniert.*, meaning once your reputation is ruined, your life gets easy, sums up a lot about furfriend s artistic doing. *freedom of filth* lives tightly along those lines and throws its full force of lushness at you, growing into an empowering industrial monster that makes you want you to rip all clothes off your body. if jfk did it, so can you. if big room sound is too much for you and you miss the simplicity and pervy voice of dingo tush that made the duo famous, you will wanna follow their instructions for self appreciation and have a listen to *touch myself*, a trainlike fuckfest for the dancefloor. make sure to bring some lube! following is a short live recording from the *fuck olympics* ... we are just going to leave this uncommented here.

the a-side starts with a driving beat, over which sultry chords hang and build. the introduction of a spirited vocal loop gives the track a more melancholic feel, all underpinned by a great bassline that ensures the track never loses its soul, depth and funk. on the flip, * buff zenky* heads into much tougher territory. the track builds with thumping kicks and those trademark * g* hats, along with a chopped vocal, tight looping bass and swinging claps. a sparse but highly effective layered synth completes a cold-blooded package - perfect for those late nights and early mornings. an excellent first release for made in soho, displaying a thoroughly current approach whilst never forgetting the deep, soulful veins that run through its racks.

nick curly s first truesoul release is outstanding. this collection of three track s encapsulates both nick curly s and truesoul s ethos and moulds them into a driving house machine. first off, crossroads uses a delicate melody that is under-lined with lashings of driving drums. trust shuffles along with it s rolling percussion and bass line whilst indigo child is just as funky and will get any dance floor fired up.

four youths are exploring unused buildings in a warehouse district when they stumble upon a lone wire running between the buildings. they follow along as it snakes between walls and under gates until they find it connected to a set of speakers.

uncanny valley and permanent vacation are joining forces for an uncanny vacation! there has always been a lively exchange between dresden and munich and both labels are known for releasing a wide variety of music so it was only natural to team up for a joint release. the record starts off with permanent vacation-regular and uk-veteran dmx krew and his “astro logical” which is as sharp and crisp as electro can go. the bass line strikes hard but he also squeezes some great melancholic synth lines out of his machines. after that, uncanny valley’s sandrow m finally gives access to the much in demand live version of “prayervan”, a tune that everybody has been singing along during his live sets. on the flipside, jacob korn (who already released on both labels) hands in “eieiei” which rises on a percussion-heavy drum basement to a discoid house stomper thanks to an irresistible sample straight from an obscure flea market find. last but not least, drvg cvltvre from the netherlands delivers a tropical house jam. “see you again” is riding on a funky disco bass line and creates a warm and cosy atmosphere with a whole bag of sound ideas. alexander dorn aka credit 00 adds his graphical talents to the record’s sleeve with a brilliant tribute to 1990s adventure video games.
