over the past several years, j(ay).a.d has released several eps touching on footwork, dubstep, grime and dancehall, approaching dance music with a wide open lens that tends to blur accepted genre lines. a bjork co-sign earlier last year jettisoned the amsterdam-based artist into the popular consciousness. raised in suriname, j(ay).a.d is the consummate dance music outsider and despite living in amsterdam, his music hardly ever fits in with the citys house and techno hegemony. the ogri ai ep is very much a blueprint record, simultaneously paranoid and dark, its seeped in industrial dread and natural beauty. and while many of j(ay).a.ds contemporaries attempt to create more alien sounding music at the expense of a human element, the ogri ai ep has been a overlooked milestone for the hybrid footwork & grime realm, and its now back on re-stock.

whilst its neighbour has always taken the plaudits on the party front the steely city of sheffield has its own house history, with much of it residing in the warm buzzing darkness of the studio. its here that we find our latest robsoul rookie. a fresh name for the label, but a producer who is far from new to the game. tommy vicari jnr’s first release was pressed to the black gold and released back in 2004. since then there have been sporadic outings, but the last two years have seen a reinvigorated tommy roll out over ten new releases and play a huge part in putting sheffield s house music firmly back on the map. threshold of eternity sees tommy drop the northern grit to replace it with shimmering warmth and sunshine vibes across all four tracks. fidgeting rhythms, chopped samples and groove-heavy beats and bass are spliced together to create an essential feel-good release.

endill006 goes split. scottish stephen lopkin and greek dimdj have delivered quality detroit informed house tunes straight for the floors, except “grave roll” which can be nice opening track. 909 turns 707 and it’s not endless illusion without proper synth lines.

can t joke with dexy is the opener here and is a bumpy, edgy house cut with tense and nervy keys jangling above a roughshod drum line. it grows ever more dark and comic and things roll on before faith is a more breezy, airy house groove. the drums here dance a nimble dance, thin synths and emotive chords all come in rich layers and a lo-fi percussive line proves how frey can conjure up idiosyncratic sounds with ease. like its title suggest, ghosts is a hauntingly atmospheric track with icy hi hats, pixel thing and hugely melancholic chords and harmonic bells all adding a sense of calm and serenity to turbulent drums deep down below. lastly, scale is a sub 100bpm crawler with fat elastic synths strung up between lazy kicks. two filtered spoken word lines add plenty of weirdness to this soupy bit of cosmic seduction and round out an ep that is stuffed with fresh ideas and great sonic invention.

copenhagens music for dreams continues its run of great releases with a tasteful 12 inch from label boss kenneth bager who presents four on-the-money remixes of his single *sunshine stereo* taken from forthcoming album *follow the beat*. currently enjoying heavy rotation on p3 (denmarks answer to radio one), this summery anthem gets makeovers from denmarks jazzbox, greek duo bonnie & klein and from mr bager himself who teams up with napoli-born producer extraordinaire tuccinelli to give us not only a superb extended vocal mix but also an on-fire dub version of the track that is sure to be a future classic both for the balearic brigade and all lovers of funky downtempo dubbed-out weirdness. treading the same territory as the fabulous frankie knuckles hallucinogenic mix of *aint nobody*, this dub is full of tricks, teasing and pleasing the dancefloor and already getting strong support of manchesters moonboots, amnesia legend leo mas and danish dj peter visti. elsewhere jazzbox deliver a great uptempo beach boogie version full of soul and groove making great use of the unmistakeable voice of damon scott, known for his work with storm queen, while bonnie & klein produce a very special percussive jazzy dub mix. the pair are on a roll at the moment and this remix with its warm marimba vibes creates that mediterranean vibe we all love. a real sun-soaked winter warmer, this 12 feels like a knitted sweater in the cold! limited vinyl.

two paris legends reunite for the latest outing on the always fresh adult only label. owner chris carrier links up with his old pal dan ghenacia for this three-track ep, which includes a remix from german talent, diego krause. chris and dan last got together for adult only back in 2007, with their ‘tumble blur’ ep and they recently hit the studio together again to roll out two super dope slices of heads-down dance floor funk. as you might expect from two highly experienced veterans, the tracks on offer are both crisp, epitomising that classic house flow with a sprinkling of contemporary flavour. the 2nd degree bounces, whirrs and chirps all over the place while the 4x4 beat keeps the energy levels high. just a sin is a more serious cut, with a solemn presence and stuttered beats together with a hushed vocals giving it a mysterious feel. unison wax bossman diego krause powers up just a sin with his remix, putting a firm emphasis on the bassline, which is strong, murky and unrelenting. a deep, dark slice of groovy house for the after-hours crew

tomoki tamura s pure house label holic trax is back with more trend setting hits with this excellent new ep from tuccillo, djebali & john dimas. tuccillo is very much on a roll at the moment - he makes everything from deep house to tech to chill out to disco and does so on labels like visionquest and 2020 vision as well as of course holic trax.

g-23 makes his debut under the strange audio dreams moniker, coming through on italy s young art-aud label with a sweltering two-tracker backed by two heavy remixes. -error design 1- is a break-driven jam that never truly drops into pool of nastiness, leaving you yearning more, while -error design 2- strips the beats in favour of glitchy field recordings and percussion-driven drones. pan s nhk yx koyxen remixes the former into a wonky bit of brain dynamite, pushing those breaks in and out his melodic waves, cardopusher makes a deep techno roll out of the same original tune. all in all, a rather essential piece of gear.

san francisco/paris-based label spring theory is back with its fourth release. called sweet bitter love, it s a four track ep of manic sample-driven house from keita sano, a japanese producer who s been on a roll lately with releases for like-minded imprints discos capablanca, mister saturday night, and strictly groove recordings. sweet bitter love kicks off with the tripped-out flair of -once i found a diamond.- it s an uplifiting bongo-led cut with dubby melodics that sound like the kind of thing sleeping bag records would have put out in the early 80s. jacques renault provides a leaner peak-time version — complete with hard-hitting snares and growling bass — via his -once i found a diamond (jacques renault trouble funk remix).- things take a turn for the delightfully weird on the ep s namesake -sweet bitter love.- starting like a straightforward house cut, it explodes into a psychedelic collage of spaghetti western guitars, tribal calls, displaced jazz fills, and other forms of cleverly sampled soundtrack exotica. the release wraps up with yet another curveball on -bouzouk.- here sano lays out a subwoofer-knocking ny garage house rhythm that takes a left turn with frenzied bouzouki playing charting arpeggios through a haze of echoing foreign voices. taken as a whole, sweet bitter love is that rare idiosyncratic bomb of an ep that will keep your dancers moving and your trainspotters guessing — in other words, it s spring theory through and through.

opener -she loves it- layers graceful elements, drifting sounds, pirouetting percussion and lets them slowly roll in like a thick fog. bvoice,anrilov & sickdisco deliver a more minimalistic version of -she loves it-. this guys are a great trio from moscow, analog gurus, already released on pro-tez, highway, time has changed, body parts. on the other side we have another piece of material from kirik called somewhere, which does the same job with similar elements. its melodious drum loop is the fulcrum around which densely layered hi-hats, shakers and various pads bounce and rotate. label boss, dirty culture deliver a more driven house version of somewhere, a more digestiv aproach. good vibes and melodic grooves from eastern europe, on wax!

the globally trendsetting house and techno family that is visionquest now turns to a new pairing of sonny fodera & gene farris for their debut ep on the label. entitled ‘we work it’, the two-track affair comes with a remix by visionquest man lee curtiss. australian sonny fodera has been at the sharp end of the dance music scene for years now, clocking up huge hits both solo and with green velvet aka cajmere, releasing albums such as afterparties & aeroplanes and appearing on cajual, defected, suara and many more top labels. gene farris, of course, is a chicago house legend who has been active since the nineties, runs his own farris wheel label and has released close to one hundred definitive eps on relief, soma and many others. up first, ‘we work it’ is a lithe ritual of house funk with bent synths and slick mid tempo drums. a spoken word vocal snippet muses on the intake of various substances and the drums roll on infectiously below. it’s sure to be a standout anthem in the months to come given that vocal line and the spiritualness of the keys all around only adds to the effect. the first remix comes from lee curtiss. this one is a much quicker and more peak time bit of tech house with textured, dynamic bass and plenty of drum fills. it’s an involved, more cosmic and tense take on the original, that will build great pressure on the dance floor. all in all this is another on point package from visionquest that will get played far and wide

lehult is back on the roll after living the rockstar life that naturally follows a sold out debut release.

entitled narita, the release is inspired by, and dedicated to, japan, and the tracks are a collage of all the experiences and emotions the producer has picked up there whilst on his travels. this release was also due to be the 44th on the label (which has now made it up to number 67) and so has clearly been cooking for a long time. once again it proves the man behind it to be focused on stripped back and hypnotic grooves, shadowy textures and subliminal synths that are abstract and truly heady. up first, sleepless is a spooky and hypnotic techno roller with icy pads and rubber drums that roll on like a haunted midnight train burrowning deep into your brain. ebisu is even more reserved, with just a light, skipping kick and tinkling, glassy keys suspending you in a wide open space of abstract atmospheric soun d. on th e flip side, mountain splitter is more urgent and immediate, with nervy pads this time racing alongside woodpecker precision and supple drums. it s heady stuff that really distracts you from the world before finally trance is a wash of grainy white noise and groaning synths that soundtrack a word deep down in the depths of the ocean. svreca is a master of getting deep inside both body and brain and does so in different but captivating ways with all four of these cuts.

this is the ninetieth release on the ongoing resopal series. furthermore it is cavaan s first release on the label with arguably their most accomplished tracks to date. on the a side the guys spread their alternative vision of house music all over and roll out the tightly arranged amphid lampshade, characterized by impulsive beats, rhythmic synths and musical knowlodege. on the flipside, track metamorphosis builds upon several layered synths, resulting in a floor effective dense catacomb of sound. both tracks pay great attention to detail, are hard to pigeonhole and reach from modern house to far-out beat driven techno.

following on from the the likes of the excellent son.sine re-issue, delsin kicks off 2015 with another one in the form of micronism s steps to recovery ep. originally released on nurture records in 1999, the ep, which comes in black and limited coloured vinyl, is a bonafide deep house classic from the short live career of new zealander denver mccarthy. engaging causelss mercy is a contemplative, atmospheric affair with soft drums and celestial pads that could roll and roll forever and you d never get tired. the quiet mind is just as deep, but the spiralling pads and rippling melodies here are more colourful and charming. both tracks are hugely spacious, luxurious affairs whilst constructing space on the flip is a more stripped back and humid number that is more enclosed and oppressive for cosy back room spaces. finally, the title track is a playful, elastic house track with heartwarming hooks and pinging drums. this tasteful ep shines a light on some definitively deep tracks that really do deserve the attention that will now inevitably come their way.

here is the second vinyl only instalment from farfromnormal records, with a fantastic 4 track ep from the young upcoming producer jamie haus, this record hold s 3 original tracks from jamie and a amazing remix from the young romanian groovesh. this record has a totally different vibe compared to the labels first release with a much heavier techno roll. mattur is a good example of this, whilst inter finds jamie haus on a much darker, dub vibe. meiose is packed with a fantastic rolling kick with atmospheric noises in the back, whilst the groovesh remix comes with that brilliant romanian touch that everyone is asking for
