martyn releases new album voids, his first for ostgut ton over the past year, dutch-born, washington d.c.-based producer martyn has undergone a metamorphosis Ð one that began with a medical emergency and has dovetailed into personal musical transformation. having narrowly avoided death after suffering a heart attack, martyn reentered his studio and began a process of reassessing the elements that drive him to make music: sampling, unpredictability, melancholy, sci-fi, polyrhythms, texture, ecstatic moments, detroit, interlocking percussion and bass. however, the initial spark to start producing again came through his experience listening to max roachÕs 1979 ensemble percussion album mÕboom.

was auf oracle ungeschliffen passiert, ist der erste output einer deutschen jazz supergroup. zunŠchst wollte man ein unperfektes spiritual jazz album aufnehmen, das vorbildern aus den siebzigern fršhnt (strata east, black jazz et cetera), einfach mal der leidenschaft nachgehen. und man wollte eine fiktive band erfinden, die es nicht gab, und rausposaunen, es handelt sich um ein unveršffentlichtes album von namhaften und beseelten typen aus den 70ern. nun ja: dann hŠtte man nie live konzerte geben kšnnen, von interviews ganz zu schweigen. kurzum, es wŠre schwierig gewesen, das geheim zu halten, also hat man sich entschlossen, die identitŠten preiszugeben: web web sind: roberto di gioia (piano, synth, percussion), tony lakatos (tenor- und sopranosaxophone), christian von kaphengst (upright bass) und peter gall (drums).

aus gro§en melodien und strapazierfŠhigen elektronischen teppichen gestrickt, ist -love what survives- gewisserma§en die essenz ihres bisherigen schaffens, indem verschiedene gesangsgŠste und musikerpersšnlichkeiten (james blake, micachu, king krule) hinzukommen, um gemeinsam zu experimentieren, formen neu zu denken, dinge auszuradieren, mit pop-†berlieferungen zu spielen, alles zusammen wachsen zu lassen. die neuen tracks entstanden grš§tenteils auf zwei vintage-synthesizern (korg ms-20, korg delta), die beide, so die band, diese -punkige, schloddrige qualitŠt hŠtten, die an robert wyatt erinnert-, die mit ihrem industrial-einschlag und dem unverkennbar direkten sound mount kimbie zu ihrem neuesten sound-update bewegen sollten. der pulsierende motorik-beat der single -blue train lines- zum beispiel schickt king krule direkt auf die †berholspur, von wo aus er seine zerklŸfteten vokalsalven abgeben kann. die offene, ausladende aura der platte ist ferner der tatsache geschuldet, dass sie zwischen london und los angeles entstanden ist, zwei standorten, zwischen denen das duo pendelte, um gemeinsame sessions zu veranstalten und ideen zu verfeinern

after retiring from the jamaican police force arthur duke reid established his treasure isle liquor store and sound system in pink lane kingston and was crowned the undisputed king of sound and blues in 1956, 57 and in 58. the duke then moved into record production and after relocating the store to 33 bond street, he then built a recording studio on top of his new premises in 1966. according to the musicians and singers the wooden construction of the treasure isle recording studio gave the music a distinctive warmth and richness and with resident engineer byron baron/smithy smith at the controls, the sound of a bond street recording was immediately recognisable.
