the nu-rons, were a family group consisting of two sets of brothers and cousins, the four young men in question being brothers daryl howard and raymond gibson (daryl’s mother registered him under his father’s surname of howard and raymond under her maiden name of gibson) together with otho bateman and charles bateman. they were all born and raised in salem, new jersey and from the age of ten and eleven began singing with a fifth member and gibson brother rudolph in a group called the gospel 5. they eventually decided to crossover to secular music and as a group known for their energetic dance routines they came up with the new performing name of ‘the nu-rons’ (taken from the word ‘neuron’ which is a cell that transmits nerve impulses). however rudolph was soon to leave the group due to physical illness. also daryl howard and charles bateman had also been part of a working group known as the devotions prior to becoming the nu-ron’s.

part 3 of the soul of the automaton series. this is soulful techno, electro with subtle ambient elements and idm echoes, touching the more experimental side of music here and there. bunnik has not completely severed his links with the past but he is unafraid of the future. this is again emotive, futuristic, concise, dissonant utopian glitch music that s equally as good for the club as it is for the soul. constructed on the west coast of holland in the harbour city of rotterdam.

when it comes to living legends in the texas and latin music pantheon, few have been at it longer and are more revered by their fans and peers than soul vocalist and mexican-american songwriter and bandleader sunny ozuna. he became a star right out of high school in the late ‘50s and hasn’t looked back in the six decades since.

by the 1970s studio one and clement ‘sir coxsone’ dodd had already proved himself to be the defining force in reggae for almost two decades. from running the downbeat sound system on the lawns and yards of kingston in the late 1950s to opening studio one at 13 brentford road at the start of the 1960s, ushering in ska and rocksteady and establishing the careers of most of jamaica’s artists – everyone from bob marley and the wailers, ken boothe, toots and the maytals, the skatalites, jackie mittoo and more – clement dodd had until this point dominated the jamaican musical world.

on his third outing with la vinyl imprint into the woods, producer / selector jimmy maheras fuses the sounds of detroit and los angeles together for a release that continues in the spirit of warehouse inspired techno, house, and electro that germinates from his monthly into the woods party series hosted with mor elian.
the title track, “the odyssey of flight 33,” bubbles up with dubbed chords and stabs that float and wobble over a clap and tom ride fit for 3am. “nightsong” follows the formula in spirit but percolates with punchy drums and stabs. finishing out the release is a full bodied basic soul unit remix of “odyssey” that beefs up and pitches down the chords and drives a heavy rhythm into a wall of sound tinged with hypnotic dystopia.

mike lundy was born and raised in nu‘unau, on the island of oahu in hawaii. from an early age, lundy s original compositions caught the coveted attention of herb ono, the legendary owner of honolulu s sounds of hawaii recording studio. in 1980, lundy recorded a solo lp entitled the rhythm of life. unfortunately, he spent so much money on production that nothing was left for promotion. it went nowhere upon release.

the equally strong -taste and see- on the flipside provides the only lyrical reference to hawai (-mangos and papayas got flavors of their own-) while remaining in line with mehl s smooth west coast vibe - he hired two of chuck mangione s colleagues for the recording, guitarist steve o conner and horn player john rekevics.
