hedonism is an ethical theory that pleasure, in a sense of satisfaction of desires, is the highest good and proper aim of human life, and this seems to also be hdnsm’s ultimate musical objective. their first release debuted as a kickstarter of “variant ep” v.a. series, showcasing three very different yet highly contemplative creations from cumsecade, anestie gomez and man spider. hdnsm flips the coin and for the second episode of “variant” series it lands on two very solid, incredibly moody and extensive works from fresh talents shcaa and cleymoore. the ep features two very different tracks yet they share the same minimalistic core. both works are blessed with intricate micro-drum arrangements for those feeling groove hungry whilst still standing tall in the experimental abstract realm pleasing those who crave unusual frequencies. a-side’s “masquée” is one of shcaa’s typical rides between sound and silence and it is hard to find another artist who understands sound gaps between grooves better than shcaa does. with his signature vocals and an incredibly delicious duality between acoustic instrumentalism and electronic slamming, this is a groovy, highly deep, very intelligently arranged piece. the flip-side “nebula”, signed by pluie/noir’s boss cleymoore, is a tip of an iceberg when it comes to the art of stripping down. in an apparently thin canvas of minimal drum arrangements there’s a vast amount of sound frequencies underneath a steady ever-kicking groove, tricking your mind into thinking that you’re hearing less than you actually perceive. nebula is hypnotic and dense but focused and sophisticatedly groovy. like the repetitive vocals you’ll hear throughout the b-side, this v.a. sticks to your mind like an addiction of some sort and pushes hdnsm to a new standard of avant-garde and forward-thinking attitude. as before, this vinyl only release comes in a gorgeous cover featuring a painting from max binski and the number of copies available is limited

the second release on modern cathedrals includes an original mix by altstadt echo supplemented with remixes crafted by donor, luigi tozzi, and asop. the inclusion of donor’s remix represents a continued effort to link together the detroit and brooklyn scenes, while the luigi tozzi remix connects modern cathedrals to the ghastly, dark styles of techno that italian artists have become so respected for. as a core member of the modern cathedrals team and a primary force behind the label’s event series, asop’s remix is the very first public release of work by this incredible new detroit-based artist. but while the artist names change from record to record, the philosophy does not. we continue in a desperate attempt to generate meaning during the short spasm of a lifetime we are given in a world that seems to conspire to prevent this effort’s realization. this situation might be inescapable, but through the rejection of complacency and dogma, we can approach our end with the bitter comfort that we were at least willing to be honest about our situation.

deep dark industrial ambient. a slowly evolving soundscape with boiling buzzing sounds, resonating through the dark world.the berserk was perhaps one of the world s best fighters, which in old norse time sworn allegiance to the norse god odin. before a battle berserkers excited each other up and occurred in bearskin or wolf skin, hence the word berserk. in the beginning of the battle they performed exceptionally talented, indifferent battlers, but in close combat they fell into berserk. then they howled like wild beasts, probably to frighten the enemy and incite their comrades and themselves, and then get into rages. a berserk in battle were said not to bother about any injuries, and was therefore until the enemy, or they died.

established producer d marc cantu has been crafting his own style of jakbeat since the late 90s, but comes to nyh with some dark and experimental techno and drones.

mikael strömbergs alter ego igor has created the album *fast & slow* who is an aspiring masterpiece in the ambient genre, the references are very clear to the 70s iconic ambient school, including satie-cage-eno-soundart, but at the same time a modern touch and a sense of the present. the story behind this album is the least frightening and fascinating as the composer strömberg was seconds away from losing his lives when the aorta ruptured all the way from top to bottom with the diagnosis: acute aortic dissection. the music became a part of his rescue and the record *fast and slow* came about as part of his healing process.

we were very excited indeed to see the third release from the quite promising love notes from brooklyn imprint! marco zenin was a featured artist on the last release under his dj octopus guise, and this time he s featured again with his other project, the more techy/ more minimal die roh, who recently had an underground athem with their release on black venison. the duo here seemingly lean their sounds in the direction of the label s and offer two-cut ep which is their deepest effort yet to date. surely more djs will play the dancier a side, behind 6000, but for us, the groovier b side and title track genghis kahn is the choice cut. label owner, nathaniel jay, continues in the precendent he s set with each release having its own unique love note,authored by him, making every one of these records collectable.

glenn underground reworks joi cardwells imperfect from 2007. a killer remix that should have been released on the 12inch but wasnt. backed with his remix of julie crochetiere s steady ground, the title track to her 2011 album. her soulful vocals match perfectly to his soulful beats.

helsinkis lauri saine is the storyteller for this, the third chapter of fools & fables. pleasingly his irresistible releases dont come along all that often, but when they do, they justifiably make serious waves. small remedies, takes us on a journey to a side of saine we seldom see. first things first, blush cuts a breezy, cheerful path through a warm analogue space, with the mid-tempo throb of sampled rhythms to keep you from drifting too far off course. casual wears altogether looser pants as we just bob to and fro in a hammock while rum-soaked session players jam away in a distant speakeasy. the tropical breeze blows free through leisure song too, as we begin to get the impression finland might actually be a small pacific island.

bond commander petter b lands on planet rhythm with a bombshell record that contains 3 staggering originals and a fierce re:axis remix. the opening effort *cc21* is a rough repetitive pacer that will definitely turn some heads. *transporter* serves as a vibey yet evolving piece of work that builds up the tension but let s go every now and then. *protoportal* is yet again a repetitive grower with a somewhat less dark build as the opening tracks. re:axis closes down with a robust rework of *transporter*. belter record.

yaleesa hall has released solo tracks and remixes on the will & ink label before now, and here returns with four new cuts on the perrin ep. the unknown producer turned plenty of heads with its first full outing, and the stripped back but succulent sounds on offer here will surely do the same again. rubber kicks rolling beneath little flecks of static and raw metal texture. wonky synth lines riding up and down. this is expertly hypnotic, over sized and cavernous techno that will suck you in, sweep you up and trap you in a perfect trance.

a new re- issue is coming from merv! two old and lost tracks from merv from 95 and 98 are coming in a new re- issue! while deepchord in america, or the thule- crew from island have been inspired from the basic channel blueprint sound coming from berlin, tempted a small group of artists their own interpretation! the new and sounding like a manifestation from basic channel-sinewy, full of energy, strongly cauterized in mind, wanted to get rediscoverd! in the year 1995, arose * melted vein*! hypnotized, slowly but full of strength it became back to the theme. merv educed their own variation- their own soul. you can hear it by the track dust-, from 1998 the further development! pads and melodies, from different galaxys, mixed with ascending chords, kept together with the 909. two tracks, two epic tracks- the pure merv- magic! both of them have been re-masterd at the traditionally berlin mastering studios d&m!

after last autumn’s ‘knowledge ep’, héctor oaks returns to key vinyl with four more solid dancefloor fillers of the kind we’re starting to expect from the berlin-based upstart. now several records deep and with his fourth berghain set firmly behind him, these days his sound is about as honed and gratifying as skills from the booth. and ‘kepler 186f’ is the proof.
on the a-side “dissolve” sets its sinews to march on this taut, tough and punchy number. “radial clicles” then reins in the muscle a bit in favour of a more skulking, spectral slow-build. meanwhile on the b-side, “stone storage” sends cool cymbals and crunchy hats on a sinuous, calculated romp. leaving “avoid reality” to close in noisy, bombastic fashion. but watch out—this one’s a bit of a tease.

key vinyl don their scouting caps once again for another split ep featuring fledgling and debuting talents. first up is the plant worker. this french dj and producer isn’t exactly new to the game, but as the plant worker he’s been slowly journeying down harder, rawer trajectories—as the name may suggest. with a trio of eps out already, “iota 001” and “iota 002” continues his exploration into purer techno forms with two cuts of deep, probing, loopy floor material. then on the flip, key vinyl unveil the first works from masked newcomer transient x4. “lost in perceptions” is a jangling sic fi trip to techno’s bleak and pitch-black periphery, whilst “ways to space” sends its cosmic theme off for a spell in the basement, coming out as a monstrous peak-time send off.

this 12inch is pure trance. who is/are rita furstenhof? we have no idea who she/he/they are. the a1 track, the mighty -hadron collider- was sent to optimo music hq about 18 months ago. normally sending one track is not much use to a label, but this was so good that we instantly replied to say we wanted to release it. rita furstenhof works in mysterious ways, and it was 18 months until the other tracks for the ep arrived. along the way there were a few times when we thought they had completely vanished, and we were never going to have a complete ep, but finally, here it is.

as one third of the founding trio of revered cologne imprint magazine, jens-uwe beyer has become an obvious choice for any adept of open-minded electronic music, both through releases such as the one-track-one-hour manifesto red book (magazine 008), several contributions to our pop ambient compilation series or inspired remixes for barnt, dream weapons and others. besides this being the same mastermind as the one behind the ongoing popnoname brand, you wouldn t expect upcoming the emissary to actually be a debut, but it is, for it s the very first time that we re treated to a full-length offering under the artists real name.

after his standout debut ep on the label in 2012, nick sinna is now back on trusme s prime numbers label with three more searing techno tracks that come complete with a remix from vril. sinna is a manchester native with the citys rich musical heritage running through his veins. from d&b to hip hop and on to house and techno, he has a diverse array of influences but distills them all into his own rugged sound, often made using some authentic bits of hardware.

super hot reissue of the in-demand original clear vinyl 12inch version of ‘give me a dance by kym released on the small but collectable baltimore label award records. with its electro / proto house groove, it became an anthem on chicagos wbmx in the early eighties and with a sexy vocal, killer synths and phat analogue b-line, this delicious slice of boogie goodness has recently found its way to the top of many a wants list since being championed by dj harvey. superb!

another day , first track of the ep, starts with some radical percussion based house that leads to a gliding deep base, underlined by vocals. in collaboration with gallya on she said , the duo takes it to the deeper level and combines spheric sounding percussion with gliding mallet notes which distinguish the track. afterhour straightness that involves all leftovers to move. last but not least, simone vitullo adds an arpeggiated techhouse-version of another day to the ep. a dark sub surrounded by minimalistic hats and strict but heavy beats bring down the sound of an great acidic house work. definitely an ep to play at dark and dusty hours.

after retiring from the jamaican police force arthur duke reid established his treasure isle liquor store and sound system in pink lane kingston and was crowned the undisputed king of sound and blues in 1956, 57 and in 58. the duke then moved into record production and after relocating the store to 33 bond street, he then built a recording studio on top of his new premises in 1966. according to the musicians and singers the wooden construction of the treasure isle recording studio gave the music a distinctive warmth and richness and with resident engineer byron baron/smithy smith at the controls, the sound of a bond street recording was immediately recognisable.
