tucked away in a now not-so-quiet corner of south east london, wholemeal have been quietly, unobtrusively getting shit done. wholemeal music’s freshman release hits the shelves this month featuring two cuts from yam records boss tom esselle and a hoofing remix from fellow south-londoner west norwood cassette library. skilfully treading the line between house, techno, and jazz, the a-side, until she spoke is a superlative exercise in light-touc h sampling and devastatingly effective rhodes work. it shuffles then stomps, hypnotises then elates, bringing together disparat e threads to create something for the head and the heart. the title track, garibaldi, maintains the light-touch sampling thread and then takes it to a whole new plane of drum-driven dancefloor detonation. twisting chord hits whirl around a savage interplay between bass and drums before dropping back to an elemental pounding, bypassing the brain and heading straight for the feet. long time wholemeal friend and serious contender for the nicest man in music award bob wncl has very kindly picked up garibaldi by the scruff of the neck, grafted an enormous pair of junglist balls onto it and kicked it screaming across t he dancefloor. this is about as peak-time as it gets. wait for the wall of bass after the second drop, its enough to stop you breathing.

this year experienced the birth of frazer campbell s deeper imprint elliot project recordings. the london based label launched back in spring with a real statement piece, composed of detailed minimal, late night seductive twinkles and a drone styled techno piece. the labels projected thought process for the future is to navigate through a varied soundscape of deeper excursions and thoughtful techno. this second ep with two originals from frazer, also includes a remix from highly respected uk musician tom ellis who increases the heat on the track light with a energetic but thoughtful techno re work.

with releases on rush hour, mister saturday night and delusions of grandeur, nebraska is a man who needs little introduction. here, he delivers and amazing ep for heist, showcasing his talent for finding those catchy, but hard to pin-down samples. the soften the wireless ep navigates nicely between disco and house with 4 originals and an amazing tom noble remix. khans bargain will be the go to track the more disco minded listeners out there, with a catchy-as-hell synth line that you wish youd made up yourself. the remix, courtesy of nycs finest disco selector tom noble, goes on a clubbier path, turning the silky smooth original into a distorted house jam full of delays and filtered drums. the b-side sees nebraska turning towards the housier side of things himself, with the blues as a perfect example of minimalistic house. here, he uses only a small amount of elements to create an intoxicating and intense groove. it wont be long breezes through with a lighthearted arpeggio and some lovely dreamy vocals to set a more emotional vibe. ep closing track (digi only) varkala is somewhat of a special track, being dug up from an old hard disc and remastered for your listening pleasure. sincerely yours, lars & maarten

... well, solo for the opening track. -a liquid state- is a mellow, melting piece of marshy machine music. warmth flows as clicks and clacks orbit a soft and soothing syntheline in a track that epitomises the term ambient techno. acronym, of northern electronics and semantica fame, takes over the controls for the flip. percussion is folded and refolded, layered into itself into a hypnotic haze. behind these blurred beats a burbling bass bulges as gentle key strokes scatter for a remix brimming with textures and intensity.

after a string of releases on drumcode records, pets recordings and hypercolour, tom demac has joined forces with will samson in a somewhat unlikely pairing for their debut release via aus.

the emotional relish series reaches its conclusion with this fourth release that sees rising dj and producer daniel avery at the helm. in barely 2 years dan has gone from up and coming dj to one of the producers in demand, with releases on optimo, thrones of blood and phantasy sound, plus a cd mix for fabric and with a debut album due in the autumn, his trajectory is assured.

you may have listened to fred de f productions with recent dance artists collaborations (adi-ermane - need each other, fred de f & luke jeferson - sankukai). new release cloud is still marked with fred de f touch and a distingtive radioactif musical flavor.
fred de f original version is progressive, ultra-bumping, inspired from spanish soundings. the version releases body-heat and energy. great track for dancefloors. tom donax composes an aerial remix and explores a different universe: breakbeat soundings, vocal inspired from the nineties and presence of pads break the rhythmic bringing the record a nice equilibrium. cool version for a home listening.

and are a duo living in manchester, uk. they have released a split 12 inch with 16 bit on mindset in 2009, the second 12 inch on black sun records that came out recently and a couple of 12 inches on horizontal ground. they sent me various batches of tracks spanning a wide range of sounds, all rooted in techno to my ears but spanning different tempos, emphasis and mood. i selected three of those tracks to appear on this ep, ranging between 130 and 135 bpm. after several hot tunes on worthy’s anabatic imprint, birminghams tom flynn joins the ranks of the dirtybird crew. i ve battle tested the a-side of this record all around the world. >catch that bird< is a rare mix of deep rooted funk whilst also sounding like a caribbean jungle track pitched down to 126. my favorite!
i d play this ep just on the strength of the a-side but i feel like a lot of attention will also be given to the b-side called >rhode island<. this is a classic piece of deep house with all the melodic elements of a dirtybird jam.
tom sent me at least 7 tracks before i signed these so the guy is certainly prolific and i expect to hear quite a bit more from this up and comer this year.

when listening to scsi-9 its quite unavoidable the mind turning apart from the body and flying, fantasizing about unexplored roads and boundaries. once again, anton and maxim are providing a trip within their personal globe, travelling in the terra del fuoco (tierra del fuego), in the southest city of te world, ushuaia. tom turns the wave in an heavy deep stone, surely to become a classic to be hold in the most fond of the genre library. the voice is shaped in the loop and becomes like paraffin, the chords completing the whole, transforming an electronic piece into a classic dance floor track. the second track, chasing shadows, following the first one basic line, fill up the b side with the yapacc remix, not disappointing the expectations and concluding the ep in a classy way, giving voice to monsters and fairies, flowing into or days groove.

jack this is a typically powerful and funky slice of peak-time techno from tom hades. the main hook comes from a big descending siren that is worked in around the groove and succession of drops and builds.
loco & jam (1605, mb elektronics) are selected for remix duties fresh from winning best new artist at the 2010 irish dance music awards. their mix takes the groove deeper but still retains the incendiary edge.
barnes bachelor rounds off the package with its linear, driving groove and gentle melodic shifts that lift up the darker, brooding undertones of the bassline. a subtle but effective track for the longer sets / early hours.
